I've not had good experience with Partition Magic 4.0. It doesn't like
a lot of partition tables! And the manual says that if you have a
partition table problem, just delete everything and start all over again.
I have found that the Partition Magic (?) which is built in to
the Caldera installer will deal with the same drive that their commercial
version refuses to touch. So I just boot up the Caldera install CD,
repartition (or resize, or whatever) and then I'm okay. One warning,
I don't think the Caldera installer deals with relocating partitions
like the commercial version does. When I've resized ext2 partitions,
I've always done a backup, reformatted the partition, and restored.
I don't know about PM 5.0 -- never saw it.

There are many downloadable books on line that are part of the Linux
Documentation Project. I think the collection is now at www.linux.org.
Check out the guides and how-tos.

Hello,
My system is a P-2 450 MHz with 64 MB RAM.
I have a Crystal PnP sound card and it works fine on my RH Linux
6.1. (I can listen to MIDI files etc.)
I have recently added a Labtech AM-242 microphone to my system and
have been able to make it run with Windoze. How do I do it with Linux ?
(The technical support staff at Labtech is primitive and they know only

Any help will be appreciated.

On the Windows box open up a DOS prompt and run 'tracert news'. This
will give you the fully qualified domain name (FQDN). Then use the
FQDN on the linux box rather than 'news'.

Mostly. For one thing, 100 Mbit is not specified on coax and 100 Mbit
cards are getting pretty cheap. For another, it is very annoying to
have your whole network die when someone unplugs their wire. For
another, there is virtually no cost difference any more when you
consider the cost of coax vs a hub.
It is not recommended to use coax for new installations.

Cron is complaining that it is not able to rotate the named log files.
Perhaps you have no httpd running, or it is logging to a different
directory or file name, or some such thing. It is not a mail problem
but a problem with your maintenance scripts.

Excerpt from /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/README.st
BSD AND SYS V SEMANTICS
The user can choose between these two behaviours of the tape driver by
defining the value of the symbol ST_SYSV. The semantics differ when a
file being read is closed. The BSD semantics leaves the tape where it
currently is whereas the SYS V semantics moves the tape past the next
filemark unless the filemark has just been crossed.
The default is BSD semantics.

I have tried these with "se" as language but it does not work.
I will try to be more precise about my problems. They regard
particularly the three letters: , , (aumlaut, oumlaut and aring if
you don't see them). When I type them in bash, nothing is
displayed. When they appear in a file name, they are displayed as a
question mark.

You have to teach all the programs you use to handle 8-bit characters
(instead of just ignoring the 8th bit). If vi and pine work inside an
xterm, then the problem is not xterm but something like bash or less
or more or whatever you're using that doesn't show the letters.
The less and bash man pages should be helpful, search for something
like "8". -chris

Hmm, from the top of my head, without any testing and/or guarantee:
#! /bin/bash
echo "Subject: Your Daily Logs" >~/logs_message echo "" >> ~/logs_message
date >> ~/logs_message cat /var/log/yourlog >> ~/logs_message echo

Or something along those lines. You wanna put this into /etc/cron.daily/
and make sure that you purge the logs daily, too, so yo don't get longer
and longer emails.
Note: this will put the contents of your logs into the email - thus it
might get huge. I don't know of any way to send attachments through a
script - if anybody knows, please post.

First thing you prob'ly need is another 64mb of ram. Then you
should use hdparm to see if your HDD is runnin up to snuff,
'hdparm -tT /dev/hd(x)'. For a 5400 rpm drive you should get
140+mb/sec<>10+mb/sec, and a 7200 rpm should get 140+/22+.
'info hdparm' is a good place to start ;)
Random reboots and crc errors are most often hardware problems.
Try with the case cover off and a table fan blowin into the box.
Also try your ram in different slots, and if more than one stick,
in different orders. Has your cpu's heatsink and fan got dust
bunnies... clean 'em up. If it's a ready made (eg, Dell) and they
saved a buck by not putting a fan on the cpu, get one.
With 64 mb ram (or even 128) you should be runnin at least
a 128mb swap, and it should be on/near the first partition.

You need to tell Apache what to do with PUT requests. From the PHP3
manual:
=====
to handle such a request you have to first tell your web server that you
want a certain PHP script to handle the request. In Apache you do this
with the Script directive. It can be placed almost anywhere in your
Apache configuration file. A common place is inside a <Directory> block
or perhaps inside a <Virtualhost> block. A line like this would do the
trick:
Script PUT /put.php3
This tells Apache to send all PUT requests for URIs that match the
context in which you put this line to the put.php3 script. This assumes,
of course, that you have PHP enabled for the .php3 extension and PHP is
active. Inside your put.php3 file you would then do something like this:
<? copy($PHP_UPLOADED_FILE_NAME,$DOCUMENT_ROOT.$REQUEST_URI); ?>
This would copy the file to the location requested by the remote client.
You would probably want to perform some checks and/or authenticate the
user before performing this file copy.
=======
You can also do the same thing with CGI scripts, but I can't remember
off the top of my head how to do that. As it says above, this assumes
you have PHP running and configured correctly.

Please define "make it run." Do you want to speak into the mike and
have the sound come out of your machine's speakers, or do you want to be
able to record sound input from the mike to a .wav file on your hard
drive, or some combination of the two? Anyway, have a look at the
ecasound package, available on http://freshmeat.net/ . The "wavrec"
program included with RedHat is very bare-bones, but useful for making
sure the mike is working correctly and the mixer is set up right (Mic1
as record source, record volume appropriate, etc.)
