We had a similar problem where browser proxy settings for accessing the
Internet prevent us from accessing local web servers. Our solution was
to configure the borwser to NOT use the proxy for internal addresses
and we listed the hostnames of our internal web servers and all is well.

If you have a LOT of browsers to configure, you might want to consider
some kind of Automatic Proxy Configuration mechanism.

Peace.....

If you have ImageMagick installed, 'convert file-to-convert.ps
newfile.eps'

'man convert' will give you more info.

It does a number of other formats as well.

I have exactly the same problem. I also run Mandrake 7.1 and no matter what

Any ideas?

Any good recommendations supported in the latest (stable) kernel? I'm
looking to capture images from off a video feed (traffic cam) and then
post the images to a INternet page. We're using something right now but
it's not handling data well. Works but is kludged together.
Willing to spend whatever on getting a good video line to a video
capture card.
Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Hi!

I own a OKI 10ex laserprinter (HP Laserjet driver). if i use gimp to
print a picture, it looks fine. if i use StarOffice 5.1 to print the
same picture, it looks much more coarse and less sharp.

StarOffice uses "lpr" to print, so i tried it manually to convert the
picture to postscript and print it with lpr from a console. It also
looked coarse.

What does make gimp different (and better!) to convert a graphic to
postscript??? How can i print with the same quality out of staroffice ?

Thank you

Has anyone been able to run a stable 2.2.x kernel with SMP and get it to
actually be stable? I can't get one to last more than a few hours before
it crashes or my memory gets corrupted and I am forced to reboot because
random processes are crashing, usually the X-server. Early 2.2.x kernels
were more stable for me, but I now have a large disk and can't use the
early versions. Anyone have any suggestions about how I can get a stable
SMP kernel?

It would appear that RedHat scripts are doing something
rather annoying.

I would like to CHANGE the greeting on the login prompt in telnet.

This occurs in /etc/issue.net. I noticed, however, that my changes
were NOT permanent. I think I have tracked the problem to the
system changing it BACK to the RedHat default during bootup.

Where is my RedHat 6.2 system committing this atrocity?

Yuo install and run a CD player. xmcd is one example.

You don't mount the CD to play music. You only mount CDROMs, not musical
CDs.

Hi Conway,

you have to change /etc/issue as well...
IMO it's better to change /etc/motd which is shown at loginprompt
as well

If you believe that the kernel is at fault, then see
/usr/src/linux/Documentation/oops-tracing.txt.

kswapd is developed by the memory-management people. The home page is
http://humbolt.geo.uu.nl/Linux-MM/ . They will probably need to know
which kernel you are using.

If you run "/sbin/depmod -ae", it will tell you what these symbols are.
Then you can look in the source code to try to see where those symbols are
defined; perhaps you just need to add support for something else.

Or you could try the test5-pre{1,2} kernel.

Are you using a recent pppd? Version 2.3.11 works for me, although
Documentation/Changes mentions 2.4.0b1.

Also, the pppd README.linux file tells you that your /etc/modules.conf
(/etc/conf.modules) needs

alias tty-ldisc-3 ppp_async
alias tty-ldisc-14 ppp_synctty
alias char-major-108 ppp_generic

Make sure you have the following in either /etc/inputrc or ~/.inputrc.

# Be 8 bit clean.
set input-meta on
set output-meta on

(One of the files won't work, but I can't remember which :)

You could also try adding the line:

set convert-meta off

to be able to type the umlauts first and then the letter.

You will probably have to log in anew, or at least restart the xterm to
make the changes take effect.
