I am having a problem installing Linux (tried four distributions thus far).
Keeping the differences between distributions in mind, basically what is
happening is that the installers either a) freeze at language selection or
b) the keyboard and mouse will not work in the installer. I can't tell for
sure which is the case, but at any rate I boot up with the Linux CD in the
drive, the installer runs, I get the language selection screen and that is
it...I have no way to provide any input or continue the installation
process. I don't believe it's a hardware problem, at least not with the
keyboard or mouse (and the computer itself is less than a year old and
performs flawlessly in Windows). That is the dilemma. I've poured through
www.linuxnewbie.org, and the sites for the distributions I've tried
(Mandrake 7.1, Red Hat 6.2, WinLinux 2000, and Corel), and found no answers
(I haven't even seen a similar problem listed). Has anyone encountered
this, or have any suggestions for a workaround. My computer setup is as
follows:
Pentium III 450 MHz
96 MB RAM
6.8 GB HDD (6.0 GB Windows, 1.8 GB Linux partition with 125 MB Linux swap
partition, set up using Partition Magic 5)
Toshiba 40X CDROM and HP 8210i CDRW
3Com EtherLink 3C905C-TX NIC with Internet access via cable modem
Microsoft Intellieye Explorer PS/2 mouse (but tried each installation with a
"plain" PS/2 mouse also, no difference).
Plain, garden variety 102 key US keyboard

Thanks in advance.

Get the gaim package from the Debian archive. The simplest way to do that
is to add this line to /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian frozen main contrib non-free

and then type 'apt-get update; apt-get install gaim' as root while
connected to the Net. Apt will download and install gaim and everything it
depends on.

This will also give you acces to all the thousands of Debian packages: you
will no longer be limited to the pitiful subset Corel provides.

What type of motherboard? Standard internal IDE CD drive? If everything is
standard and supported, you might try to reset CMOS setup to its default
values. Also check for any motherboard jumpers that may be non standard.

Also, if you have a functioning MS Windows system, check the Device Manager
for any device conflicts.

Had the same thing happen with my HP Pavilion N3270 laptop. My solution
was to throw it into suspend mode when it froze, then bring it back out of
suspend. Fixed it on the laptop...desktop I don;t know. Remove keyboard
connection and re-attach?

Sorry, I mad a mistake above: it's definitely ctrl+k that kills up to
end of line. But ctrl+d should delete only 1 character, alt+d an entire

Not sure if they will be able to help at the moment but it's worth
trying Canon themselves, they do seem to be responding slowly to queries
about OS other than Linux so maybe if enough people ask they'll either
write driver(s) or at least release the info so others can...

In the RedHat 6.2 install did you use the TAB and SHIFT keys to answer
the questions until you got to the partition section? The mouse has
never worked for me during the installation of RedHat.

Your modem probably has a command that makes it report the true connect
speed when it issues the "CONNECT" message. Most modems seem to default
to reporting the serial-line speed there instead of the modem-to- modem
speed. Add that command to the modem config script and then you should
be able to see the result in /var/log/messages.

Re the low speed, given a slow machine like a 486 you may be suffering
from interrupt overload. I had such a problem a couple of years ago and
struggled with it for quite a while. Depending on how your modemis
configured (is it one of the standard serial ports on IRQ3 or IRQ4, or
is it on another IRQ such as 5??) it may not be given a high-enough
interrupt priority, so anything else in the system that wants service
gets it before the modem does. One symptom of this is when you're
running PPP and noticing its slow, look at the output of ifconfig:

eth0 Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:20:AF:93:30:EC
          inet addr:192.168.2.11 Bcast:192.168.2.255 Mask:255.255.255.0
UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1
          RX packets:148639 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:133516 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:1
          collisions:1953 txqueuelen:100
          Interrupt:12 Base address:0x210

lo Link encap:Local Loopback
          inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
          UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:3924 Metric:1
          RX packets:558972 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
          TX packets:558972 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
          collisions:0 txqueuelen:0

These examples are for eth0 and lo, but when ppp is running you'll also
have a section for ppp0. In that section look at the "errors:", "dropped:",
"overruns:", and "frame:" error counts. If one or more of them is notably
greater than zero (1 or 2 may be ok, but 50 or a thousand or whatever is
not OK) you've got some kind of comms problem, possibly the one I mentioned
above.

If, as I said above, your modem is not on IRQ3 or IRQ4, you can adjust
its interrupt priority by using the "irqtune" package. I used it because
my modem was COM4/IRQ5 and without it I was getting perhaps 1kbps
transfer and lots of errors, with it transfer rates consistent with my
modem speed and no errors.

You should be able to find irqtune at:
        http://www.best.com/~cae/irqtune/irqtune.tgz

Consider yourself lucky. Hans is quite right. Most build-in modems in
laptops are winmodems. In case of the Armada1700 it surely is so no
modem in linux. Or better to say not yet, because

You probably have a software-modem (or winmodem) inside so it wouldn't
normaly work with linux.
Try to find out what kind of modem it exactly is and you might have a
change.
Here are some links you can look into which have valuable information on
laptop/linux specifics:

The keyboard didn't work at all...no keys worked. At this point, I've
unplugged and plugged back in both the keyboard and mouse, and even tried
different ones. I'm still not sure if the system freezes or if it's the
mouse/keyboard, but nothing responds. I've had one person tell me via email
that they suspect video, I have an NVidia Riva TNT 16 MB AGP card, but both
Red Hat and Mandrake claim to support this card. I've checked in Windows
for conflicting hardware (as suggested in another post) and there are no
conflicts. The CD ROM is a standard internal IDE drive, and I verified that
the BIOS values were all at defaults (also suggestions from other posts).
Thankfully I'm not depending on Linux for anything, because from what I've
seen these "user friendly" installers aren't too hot. My computer is pretty
standard as far as hardware, nothing too complicated or out of the ordinary
(and Windows works just fine), but for the sake of making sure I pulled it
apart today (needed cleaning anyway), reseated all cards and RAM, checked
all cables and connections, and all appears in order (even cleaned the
contacts on the cards and RAM sticks). The only thing out of the ordinary
in there was a bunch of dust. :)

So, I'm still at square one. Is running Linux as much of an uphill battle
as installing it?

Subject: Netscape 4.72 (128-bit) and 4.73 keeps crashing!!??
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 07:56:53 GMT

Hi all:

I have Caldera OL 2.3 with kernel 2.2.16. The Netscape that came with
it 4.61 ran pretty stable on this machine. However, as soon as I
upgrade to 4.72 (128-bit version), Netscape starts crashing every once a
while, with no noticeable pattern (the reason seems to be random).

I then tried to upgrade to 4.73 (58-bit), the same thing keeps happening
(in fact, it happens at least 3 times today that prompts me asking this
question here).

Have anyone seen this behavior with Netscape before? Anything that I
might have missed when I recompiled the kernel?

Thanks very much in advance.

Patrick.
