Hi:
I have installed StarOffice 5.2 (for Linux) on my Caldera 2.3 box (with
kernel 2.2.16). as root. However, when I login as another user, it
doesn't seem to be usable at all. Is there any thing I have to do to
let non-root users use StarOffice on this machine? Or I simply have to
install a copy for each user (even for the same machine)?
Thanks a lo t in advance.
Patrick.
BTW, does anyone know why my messages never got to
staroffice.com.support.misc and staroffice.admin?

I'd be a bit careful with the car analogy - what is said about windows is true but
with a linux powered car?
Where do you put the petrol - /usr/petrol or /usr/local/petrol?
Not withstanding that alot of stuff you get as a "kit" and have to compile it into a
car..
Also, until recently your car couldn't have more than 1024 cylinders..
The list goes on - I think discussions between Windows vs Linux are fruitless and
often border on religeous fanatiscism (sp?)...

Read the documentation (INSTALL or README or the like). It explains in
detail how to set SO up for regular users.
BTW, there's no need to crosspost this simple RTFM question to several
groups.

If the physical layout is standard you will also be able to dd the entire
floppy disk to a disk file.
Maybe one of the other names for the floppy device will work. Each of the
names is used for different floppy physical layout.

For other layouts you have (hopefully) the setfdprm utility to custumize it.
The setfdprm utility may not be available with some linux distributions.

There is a steap learning curve but well worth it once you get it
installed and start to understand it some. Don't give up the first time
I tried it it took me a while also and I ended up installing Slackware
instead but that has been a couple of years ago.
By chance did you try using the drivers disk? I don't know that that is
the answer, just an idea. It should be in the /images/drivers directory
and will be named gdth-drivers.img or gdth.img or something like that.
Just an idea. Also another idea would be to try the new boot.img which
is available in the updates directory at RedHat's FTP site.
Just a couple ideas.

Actually, I did read the README that came with the installation. I couldn't
find anything at all. The closest thing I found from Sun's site is to start
the installation with ./setup /net (then run the setup on each user's
login) which is what I have done. That doesn't seem to work. Can you give
me a little more details?
I am sorry if this crossposting troubles anyone, but this question just
doesn't seem too simple to me (I admit that I am just plain stupid). Also,
I do think that groups like alt.os.linux.caldera (the distribution that I am
using) and comp.os.linux.admin are related to this question though .......
But, thanks for your suggestion anyway.
Patrick.

Dear linux friends,
I get problems when I try to use " linuxconfg" . Error Messages
were seen on the X-terminal.
Actually I want to make LAN in my home, so I need to configure the IP
(192.168.0.1) of my computer (running linux),
but even though I have configured the ip of my computer on X Window's Linux
Configure , I still can't ping myself(192.168.0.1) and also the other
computer running Windows 98 with IP (192.168.0.2). Can you tell me how to
correctly configure the IP of my computer running Linux.
If I want to re-install linuxconf, what should I do?
The following information you may find useful?
linux version: Redhat 6.1
Number of Lan cards: 2 (one for connecting cable modem and one for
connecting lan)
Thank you,

I'm sorry I can't go into more detail as I don't have access to my Linux
box now. It 's been a while since I have done this, but the procedure
seemed fairly straightforward to me back then. IIRC you have to install
(as root) with the /setup/net option and then login as user to let SO
create the user folders and presets.
All you really need is the information in the README, it does work that
way...
Good luck,
Michael

Hi
I'm trying to set up a Linux box to act as the in-house mail server for our
company. We have 2 sites, linked by lease line.
First site is running NT network; 2nd site is running Netware <vbg>.
My idea is to set up sendmail & fetchmail.
Any tips or hints? Any definite _Dont's_ ?

I have a PC with touchscreen, that I am going to use as a web kiosk, and I
need a web browser that will allow users to access just one particular site
(defined in a mneu option?). I don't want the user to be able to change ANY
settings in the browser, so perhaps there should be an option to disable
menus.
I am using Red hat 6.2 (release 2.2.14-5.0), running XFree86 and GNOME.
Could anyone recommend such a browser?
Thanks for your time

This isn't to be considered a flame war starter, all such replies will
be kill filed. Just wanting to add to the discussion for an OS not
mentioned here. I am a FreeBSD user of long standing, due to having many
install problems with earlier Linux versants and none with the BSD
variants. Goes in the first time and every time for me. BSD does require
knowledge of UNIX however. I have been a UNIX user and admin for many
years, so the install is no problem for me.
I have again been trying to load Linux in order to support and promote
anything but M$ for server apps. Any Linux on standard hardware, and am
having problems. My latest is Mandrake 7.1 and it's been nothing but
problems. Next it's Turbo Linux.
So in your search for alternative OSes, look at the BSDs. They are a
hardy breed, just not user friendly during the installation. But once I
have it up, I use fvwm95 as the window manager for my wife and kids.
Looks like Windoze and they can use it without too much training (my 10
year old daughter even prefers vi editor at the command line. Weird kid,
but then so do I).

If you are going to use Netscape Messenger and the address book in Netscape,
you can directly import the .PAB into Netscape - or at least you should be
able to. Pull up the address book in Netscape and click File > Import...
Hope that helps.

Netscape crashes on linux tend to be to do with Java in my experience. I
always turn off Java support, and don't have any problems.
