Won't work if the email address begins and/or ends the line. Awk would
do a better job, especially if there could be multiple email addresses
on some lines.

Do you actually have entries for the hosts on your LAN?
Did you change any settings regarding file sharing on any of the
systems? What happens if you shut down Samba and reboot the four
other machines? I think a Samba problem is preventing you from
resolving the NetBIOS names. If you actually do have DNS entries
and are not relying on a browse master (WINS server, etc.), then
ignore this.

trow it somewhere in the bootup scripts
for exampler (in redhat): place the "/.../apachectl start" in
/etc/rc.d/rc.local
this should do it.

Thanks for the reply.
Initially I tried this command in an Eterm window. But in the meantime I
also tried in at a real command line (other consoles) - same result.
The strange thing is that I can remember that once there was the result
140+0 records in
140+0 records out
when I tried this command the first time after I read it in a CD-How-to.
Mounting didn't work eighter.
Now it's always with 1+0.
The drive does still work under Windoze.
(at least I hope so ;-)

The S3 ViRGE GX/DX is supposed to use the SVGA driver. However, this may
not be the case for yours, because it sure wasn't for mine. I had to use
the S3V driver. I used XF86Setup for my configuration tool. When I did
"Card" I chose Detailed Setup, picked my card and at the top clicked on S3V
instead of using the SVGA that it chose. 86C385 was the chip I had.
I got good X on it, but it would not give me back a decent console after
running X. I wrote to XFree86.org and they knew about the problem, but not
a solution. reset did not work. Anyway, you may not have the same chip,
but you might try forcing it to use S3V like I did. Be sure you install
that driver before running the config program.

Hello people,
I am trying to install RedHat 6.2 linux from a FAT16 partition of my
harddisk.
i.e.
I have all the RPMs (about 500 M worth) downloaded into this partition.
I am starting the boot from a bootimage in a floppy. The setup comes up and
the third of fourth screen when I select this partition for installation, it
says "It doesnt look like there is a RedHat installation tree in the
paritition" and fails.
I have tried various directory settings like
/RedHat/RPMS/<all the files here>
/RPMS/<files here>
Any idea what should be to directory structure for the installer to pick the
RPM's properly? (Does it have to Mimic the CDROM from redhat?)
Appreciate your time
cheers

Subject: Data CDROM and 'gid=' mount option
Date: Mon, 24 Jul 2000 17:08:13 -0400
We have a data CD with a bunch of files, all with uid=502, gid=502. When
can mount the cdrom successfully as a user, but can't access the files.
When we (as root) look at the file ownership, we see that the files are
'owned' by whoever is uid 502 on the system on which the cdrom is mounted.
If (as is usually the case) the user who mounted the cdrom *isn't* uid 502,
then that user can't access the files.
OK, so after some study of the mount man pages, we changed the fstab line to
include the option 'uid=' (note the value is blank). According to the
iso9660-specific options section of man mount, this is supposed to change
the ownership of all the files on the cdrom to be "the uid of the current
process", which we hoped was running as the current user. This *did not*
solve the problem - the symptoms were the same as before. However, when we
changed the fstab line to include 'gid=[value for the user who mounted the
cdrom]', then that user could mount the cdrom and access all the files.
The original fstab line was:
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 user,noauto,ro 0 0
The lines for the 'gid=' trials were: (we tried several variations)
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660
owner,uid=,gid=,noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 owner,uid=,noauto,ro
0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660
owner,uid,gid,noauto,ro 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 owner,uid,noauto,ro
0 0
And the line that worked (sort of) was: (where 501 was the test user's uid)
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660
owner,uid=501,noauto,ro 0 0
We would much prefer not to have to have a separate fstab line for each user
that wants to mount this particular cdrom and access the files. Anyone have
a clue what we are doing wrong here?
TIA,
Frank

No; the only way to find out is to look in the server's configuration file
or the log messages it produces when it starts up. I assumed that you
knew; otherwise, how do you know that they're even forwarding in the first
place?

As far as I know, there's no easy way to remove the Disk Manager without
losing data. Can I at least set up Linux to not see the 63 sector offset
and thus make the files accessible when mounted? I was able to mount that

At a shell prompt (look for something like "xterm" or "rxvt" or
"terminal" -- I don't know KDE) type
locate soffice
The shell will come back with output like so:
/usr/local/bin/Office51/bin/soffice
It won't be exactly like that, because I installed StarOffice in a
different place than Mandrake probably does.
Now, type in everything that comes BEFORE "soffice" and add in
"setup", like so:
/usr/local/bin/Office51/bin/setup
Running this program will install StarOffice for your personal user
account (assuming I'm guessing right). You'll probably have to
restart KDE before it shows up on the menus. As I recall, one of the
KDE menu choices lets you do that, or you can restart the X Windowing
System by hitting Ctrl-Alt-Backspace.
Good luck.

Part of the problem is that SO always loads the whole environment, or
at least the basics of that -- so you always load the word processor,
spreadsheet, database, web browser, and presentation software, like
it or not. People who've seen demos of the alpha code, with the
components broken out into separate programs, say the memory
footprint is much smaller.

Well, whoever made that CD should be hit with a Clue Stick... the
Rock Ridge permission bits should be set to 555 for every file, and
every file should be owned by UID 0, GID 0 since the UIDs don't
translate from machine to machine.
If nothing else, you can disable all the UID/GID stuff by putting
"norock" in the options field of the fstab line. That will disable the
Rock Ridge extensions and allow everyone to read all the files, though
the filenames *may* revert to 8+3 MS-DOS land. If the burners of that
CD were smart (doubtful!) and included the TRANS.TBL, then you'll get
long filenames as well. Good luck, HTH.
