Uh.. gordon, when I use hdparm, I use only the -d1 option due to a few
reasons
1) There are some controllers out there that when they see a 33 and a 66
drive will use 33 for *both*. Then there are others that use 33 for the 33,
and 66 for the 66.
The safest is to use the lowest common denominator. ( If you really want
speed, get a 2 gig of ram and sit back )
2) The 66 requires a special cable with more, thinner wires to act as
shielding. You must have got that with the main board. I have seen several
situations where a drive refused to work at high speeds because it was
farther along the cable. Then again, my hdds are set to udma2 for windows.
3) Linux must be able to set the controller properly. IF you have a intel
MB, it should be OK, even with the 440BX chipset. I have a GigaByte, and
hence I do not use hdparm on my hdd's. On ly on the cdrom. My mp3's are on a
cd :) . So far things are fine eventhough linux says that the ide controller
is "Unknown"
4) After reading the man pages, I still am not "man" ( or penguin) enough to
go messing with the -c values. I once so completely powered down the drive
that I had to halt, power-off and power-on to get it back up ! So I tread
carefully and usually heed the warnings in them man pages.

pppd needs hardware access, only possible from a root account apparently.
So , upon launch, it tries to gain root access to do it's work
> B. Can I fix this, and, if yes, how do I do it?
I never fixed this because because I used pam.d to provide access to a root
script that would ( as root) run pppd , all from the command line.
> 2. A. How do I install pppd with the SUID bit set?
I don't know. But follow the advice in glitch's post .
> B. What is the SUID bit, anyway?
It is a premission bit which indicates that a program can change it's user
and group id's,
instead of r-x you see r-s .
For example , say you just banged out a script to do something for you. now
before you execute it you have to mark it as executable by uing the command
chmod +u+x myscript.
Likewise for suid.

I had the same problem, here's the fix.
In Xmms, Options, set the Output Plugin to OSS Driver 1.0.1 [libOSS.so]
That should do it.

Well, I don't know why "bash" is exiting, but "csh" and "tcsh" are
happily invoked, and behaving as desired (printing stderr with different
colour). You may want to strace your program giving bash as argument and
watch what's happening.

Hi:
What I'm wondering is if I can download a Linux program in Windows to a
file, and then access it in Linux later. Will the program survive the
translation process, or not? If I have to have my internet access in
Linux, then I'm going to have to spend some more money to get that to
happen. Right now I've got Juno, but they are MS Windows only.

You have installed lilo into the /boot partition.
But the active partition is still w2k.
use fdisk or any other partitioning tool to set your /boot partition as
active.
Next, "Unhide" the w2k boot partition, if it becomes hidden, or the nt
loader will freeze half way into booting nt saying that it can't access nt
or something.

If you download a binary file, the binary format is the same.
In fact, I did a lot of time, download to my NT machine, burn CD,
mount on Linux and run.

Hi all!
Currently, I'm using an old data acquisition card. Because Windows runs
many tasks and services in the background without the user's control I
have chosen write a simple driver for DOS. I'd like to know if Linux also
works fine in a simple data acquisition system. For example:
1) Is it possible to a user restricts the number of running processes when
the system is acquiring data? Maybe if many processes is running
simultaneously the time interval between each sample is not the same.
2) Is it possble to a non-root user accesses the data acquisition card's
ports?
Are there any homepage about this subject?
Thanks in advance,

does anybody know how I can connect two (Linux)PC's with PPP over a seriall

the chat program but here it can't, because there are no modem messages.
My intention is to emulate an internet access to an ISP.

I figured that out now, this gives me a list of packaged files which I
might have to consider when I move to an updated version (stuff like
/etc/ppp/options). Trouble is ther are literally hundreds of
initialisation files for mail, kde, gnome etc which apparently don't
belong in any particular package and I can't tell if I need to keep
any/all of them.

Do a search for Linux Lab Project; you'll find info there about daq

Do you mean remote administration isn't done? I find that hard to
believe. This would require someone to be, or easily be, at the
machine 24 hours per day to fix even a minor problem such as a
reboot.

Some program starts behaving differently if its input and output does not
look like a tty device. To fix this problem you use a pty/tty pair,
much like the script command would do.

Run the file how you did to do your initial install but add: -net to the
end.
This makes star office install itself so that other users on the same
machine or on other networks can then install a minimum install locally
while using the rest from the -net isstall.
Stick it in /opt/office52 not /root/office52 so everyone can access the
necessary programs. Then as a user /opt/office52/progra/setup should install
the workstation setup for the user calling it.

Subject: Changing LILO in Mandrake?
Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 15:01:25 GMT
I'll admit I'm somewhat of a newbie to Mandrake Linux,
and this is probably a stupid question...but, I need the
answer.
I just installed Mandrake 7.1 on my system in a dual boot with
Win98. My hard drive is in four partitions:
Partition 1: Win98 system files (1.5 GB) - hdc1
Partition 2: Win98 programs (8 GB) - hdc2
Partition 3: Linux Swap (133 MB) - hdc6
Partition 4: Linux Native: Mandrake Distro (2.3 GB) - hdc7
After I installed Mandrake and LILO, Linux is the first
boot option and loads Mandrake after 10 seconds,
unless I type Windows. I want to set it up so that Windows
boots after 10 seconds, unless I type Linux.
What's the easiest way to change this in Mandrake? Or
if someone could point me to a Mandrake HOWTO Web link
for this, I would appreciate it.
Thanks!
