Date: Tue, 07 Nov 2000 23:12:10 GMT
I've discovered that it's possible to configure XDM with a more
atractive look, and I've downloaded a couple of themes from
x.themes.org.
I've also downloaded XV to make bitmaps visible and moved the theme
files into /etc/X11/xdm but when I reboot my PC I only get one
photograph and I can't login.
Does anybody know what I did wrong and what do I have to correct ?
THANKS.

Subject: Problem with kernel-2.4.0-test9
Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2000 20:21:47 +0800
Dear sirs,
I've found I not the only one who find something's wrong with new kernel.
That is , When I build kernel 2.4.0-test9 on my PC with IDE disk , It's
all OK.
But When I build it on DELL 6450, SCSI/RAID on it, It's wrong.
When I use Redhat 6.2 , or when I build 2.2.17, everything's OK. all the
modules I need to add to the kernel is eppro100.o for NIC , aix7xxx.o for
SCSI and megaraid.o for RAID.
But when I download 2.4.0-test9, and config it with the same configuation
with before, It's wrong. it tell me:
....
Megaraid : v107 (December 22.1999)
Megaraid : found 0x8086:0x1960: in 03:0b.1
Megaraid : board configured for I2O,ignoring this card .Reconfigure the
card.
Medaraid : in the BIOS for "mass storage" to use it with this driver.
VFS : Cannot open root device "801" or 08:01
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic :VFS:Unable to mount root fs on 08:01
...
and system halted. I don't know what to do. I've selected the Ramdisk ,the
support of I2O, and not use the modules in the new kernel, I add all of the
modules into kernel. but nothing happened.
(when I try to rpm to new kernel from Redhat 7.0 by using the disc2, it's
all the same.)
Is there anybody can tell us something? thanks a lot!
if I cannot solve the problem, they'll choose the D- Windows 2k. I don't
wanna see it happened.
the most important thing is to make the Linux support 4GB RAM. is there any
other way except for waiting for the stable 2.4.0? thanks a lot!
yours sincerely,
Nick Cheng

Your post is incomprehensible. Try again.
If you have a tar archive, untar it, read the README inside, and do what it
says.
Note that /usr/src/linux/asm/stat.h is most definitely NOT a tar
archive! So I don't know what you are on about ...
Getting a directory called gdb made rather suggests that you had a tar
archive of gdb (gnu debugger). Why?

The world is too much with us; late and soon,
Fetching and Sending, we lay waste our powers: Little

I like kmail, its just that I want to be able
to do mail the Real way. Fetchmail finds my mail at
dialup ISP server, but gives "SMTP connect to localhost
failed". Sendmail delivers to other users, and appears
to queue outgoing messages. But, somewhere between the
two, theres a gap.
I have a "order hosts, bind" line in
/etc/resolv.conf.
What have I somehow missed from the docs+faqs?

Unix uses a read / write cache and sync makes sure everything is
being written to the disc(s).
If for instance you've just compiled something huge and then call
sync you may notice some sudden disc activity.
Oh yes, and see man sync of course ;)

This is getting to be a very FAQ: please make certain that
"defaultroute" is one of the PPP options, or the option of however
your system connects to the outside world.

Some optimisations may make things slower or even generate bad code, beware,
but pretty much all installation scripts I've seen so far use some defaults.
Out of experience:
-O0 .. -O1 :: You don't trust the compiler
-O2 :: Usual the default
-O3 :: Sometimes the default
-Os :: Bad code when compiling glibc-2.1.97, *ouch*
-march :: Optimise for a specific CPU
-mcpu :: Optimise for a specific CPU *and* generate CPU specific code
General question is now whether you're not going to spend more time with
optimising than you can win by optimising ;)
You may avoid -fstrict-aliasing as the developer of the code then *really*
had to know what the code does and you may or may not use -fno-strength-reduce
as from some profiling (Intel) it mostly resulted in larger code while often
there was an actual loss in execution speed, so I decided the gain would not
be worth the pain.
All that for gcc of course and yes, often you may "see" an increase in speed,
even though I dare say this does not mean there is one, actually.
Anyway, this is a (nowadays) slow machine (PIII) but all SCSI and very good
hardware. All software compiled by myself and I've never used anything
higher than -O2 .. cannot complain at all.
If you run memory hogs like KDE or some other desktop then adding some
memory may be the best idea to start with.
Cheers,
Juergen

Differences of opinion are what makes the world go round...
I, for example, LOVE KDE2, warts and all. BECAUSE, I know it will
only get better and better and better. KMail is excellent, KNode reads
the news server perfectly (I'm using it now!). KDevelop runs under KDE2
beautifully. I imported a 6 page Word doc last night and it came across
100%. Looked great! It has some warts, but those can be eliminated.
It is not quite as stable as KDE1, but at this point in the development
cycle KDE2 is a lot more stable than KDE1 was. As far as I am concerned,
it is a win-win situation for both the user and Linux.!
Good Job KDE!

I have samba setup. I have set up a printcap entry that will print to

line of the file and then it steps down towards the end
of the
page

this.

Date: Wed, 08 Nov 2000 00:10:05 GMT
I'm looking for software similar to ntop, iptraf, or trafmon that can
monitor network connections... however I'm looking for a specific,
simple stat that none of these programs have -- transfer rates!
I want to see what kind of transfer rates people are getting on my
server. Just a nice k/sec updated every x number of seconds would be
perfect! Yet iptraf (which I am really impressed with otherwise) has
just about every stat EXCEPT that.
Can someone suggest a program that can do this? Console only please, no
X here.
Thanks!

All of the RPMs, with the exception of ones (like RH7) that depend on
newer, incompatible versions of the libc, should work. However, you may
break the dependency tree, different distributions use different names
for the various packages, so you will have to install it with --nodeps.

Both KDE and GNOME are object oriented. KDE's object orientation is
Qt's, i.e. the OO built into C++ with some additional keywords. You
need a kluge in form of a "meta object compiler" to preprocess any
files that define slots or signals.
GNOME's OO is implemented at runtime (GtkObject, soon to become
GObject), which allows for programming in plain C and easier binding
to scripting languages which use runtime-oriented OO. Of course, here
there's a kluge, too, i.e. you need to use special casting macros
quite a lot.
There is a C++ wrapper called Gtk--/Gnome-- which conveniently wraps
the GTK+/GNOME object model with all the macro klugery into doodads
such as overloading, namespaces etc. This wrapper is reputed to be
very neat indeed.
> 2. I know GNOME has gtkglarea; does KDE?
There is OpenGL support in Qt. I don't know whether it's as featureful
as GtkGLArea.
> 3. What else should a C++ developer know?
You should decide for yourself: Do a simple test program both in
KDE/Qt and in Gtk--/Gnome--, and choose what's easier to program for
you. The performance and feature set should be quite the same.
