Why the allergy to LILO? Without knowing why LILO is unacceptable, it's
difficult to offer alternatives. Because it's free, most distributions
use LILO. One or two may ship with BootMagic (I know the commercial
version of Caldera and Macmillan's version of Mandrake ship with
PartitionMagic, but I'm not sure offhand if those packages include
BootMagic). Note that even if you use something like BootMagic, System
Commander, etc., you'll still need LILO to boot Linux. (There are a few
alternatives, though, like GRUB and LOADLIN, but the point is that Linux
needs something designed for Linux to boot. This thing can be nearly
invisible to the user, but it must be installed.)

If you're saying the store's doing the install, then they should know
how to do it. If I gather correctly that you're asking questions on
behalf of the store, I'd run the other way; they clearly don't know
enough about Linux to do a professional job. There are lots of outfits
that DO know enough about Linux to install it on a system (in
conjunction with Win98, even).
Multi-boot installs need not give the user any grief, if you know what
you're doing. My book, _The Multi-Boot Configuration Handbook_
(http://www.rodsbooks.com/multiboot/) covers this topic in detail.

If u ran fdisk from win 98 u wiped out your boot record to boot into
Linux that restored your original boot record which boots u into
windows
this one is just a guess u need to reformat your HD and then boot from
a Linux boot disk that will let u install from your CD or if u dont
have a CD copy of it and u have the install files on another HD
then u can boot to that drive and install from there and repartition
your HD's to Linux partitions

I am trying to pass two commands to the kernel.
mem=128M & hdd-ide-scsi
They both work individually, but when I add them in together the
mem=128M only gets sent to the system. There are no errors.
The lilo.conf entry looks like this:
"append="hdd=ide-scsi; mem=128M"
Any ideas? Thanks for any help

Hi

install of Mandrake 7.1
Everything goes well untill i go and try to compile I do bzImage
and have tried zImage It runs the compile fine untill the end where
i get a msg that it is leaving usr/src/linux/i386/boot/ it says it
cannt find something like (AS86) and gives me 2 error codes 127 and

I wish i new what was wrong i checked my version of GCC which doing a
gcc -v comes up with i think 2.95.xx which i guess is above what they
say i need which is 2.7.2 I have also tried to get a different copy
of that same kernel and it also didnt help

Subject: Re: alsa sucks
well, I got it working now thanks to another poster replying directly to me
about what I might have missed. I am using Suse 6.3 and I have a yamaha ds-xg
sound card in a sony vaio laptop. I didn't realize I needed to insmod 3 of
the oss modules in order for kde to make sounds. I think it is kind of stupid
that I still have to use 3 'oss' modules even though I'm using ALSA. I would
think that ALSA is supposed to take the place of those modules with it's own
so that even oss emulation isn't needed.
I did run snddevices and did everything else like it said to do in the INSTALL
file, I just didn't load oss emulation modules b/c I didn't think I needed
them since I was using ALSA and not OSS.

I am currently posting and reading from Krn 0.6.0, and have an RPM for 0.6.11;
I also have a beta of knews, but am not excited about it, if it just another
basic newsreader.
I know that Netscape Communicator can handle it, but its never been a faovrite
either. And pine and news are a bit lower than I want.
I'm not really a snoot, but I just like a decent newsreader with a decent

Thanks... that definately answers my question... and raises another one...
when I do a vga=ask, and then scan, I get a list from 0 to b (1-9,a-b)... I
can type in either 9, or 0122 (I guess the hex value...) and have it load
the
resolution (in my case, 100x30...) but I can't seem to put either vga=9 or
vga=0122 in the lilo conf file... it accepts them, but gives me an ask
prompt
during boot... are the only ones that I can use the ones that come up first,
before the scan...
And one more... when I do get vga=788, etc to load (I guess my kernel must
have
had framebuffer support enabled already...) my console is flaked out after
returning from a startx Gnome session... none of the modes seems to cure
it, and
I have to reboot to get a "clean" console...
Thanks again...

Subject: Triple Boot with 98+NT+Redhat for a 18 GB HDD?
Date: Sun, 30 Jul 2000 12:54:42 +0800
Hi! I guess that maybe you may encounter the same problem since your laptop
HDD is huge and can offer me a ray of hope into this problem. I am trying
to install a triple-boot on my laptop - win98/2000/red hat. I have created
a FAT16 primary partition (2GB) for my Win 98 and next created a FAT32
logical partition that is contained in the extended partition (14GB) and try
to install the rest (2 GB) with Red Hat. I choose "Gnome Workstation" for
the "installation type" and instead of automatically install and allocates
the remainder 2 GB for Red Hat. Red Hat prompted me a inteface that talks
about mounting drives which leaves me puzzled; default installation does not
have this interface. Why is that so? I have read a few documentations and
the closest problem I have seems to be that I am trying to install beyond
the 1024th cylinder of the hard drive; my HDD is about >2000th cylinders.
How do I install a boot partition with the first 8.4 GB with the following
configuration
This what the Disk Druid Shows:
Mount Point Device Requested Actual Type
<not set> hda1 2045M 2045M DOS 16-bit>=32 MB
<not set> hda5 13215M 13215M Win98 FAT32
Drive Geom[C/H/S] Total (M) Free (M) Used (M) Used (%)
hda 2343/240/63 17297 2037 15260 88
When I tried to add a /boot partition that is 16MB (Linux Native), The
following error mesage appears:
"They are currently unallocated partition present in the list of requested
partitions. The unallocated partition are shown below, along with the
reason why they were not allocated"
"/boot Boot partition too big"

Hey... I just had a quick question about the patch to get the 2.3 kernel
USB support implemented on 2.2 kernels. I have the 2.2.16 kernel, and I
followed the instructions on SuSE's webpage on how to patch it (gunzip

it's little spiel, and then it asks me the name of the filename to patch.
The documentation didn't say anything about what filename to patch. If
it helps I'm running Slackware 7.1. Thanks in advance. :)
