I am running Caldera OpenLinux 2.3 and several times
when I tried to install an RPM package it reported
failed dependencies, like libc.so.6 and a few more
libraries. Strange thing is that I do have those
libs installed.

Example:

> rpm -i --test tcl-8.3.2-1.i386.rpm
failed dependencies:
        libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by tcl-8.3.2-1
        libc.so.6(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tcl-8.3.2-1
        libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by tcl-8.3.2-1
        libdl.so.2(GLIBC_2.1) is needed by tcl-8.3.2-1
        libm.so.6(GLIBC_2.0) is needed by tcl-8.3.2-1

> ldconfig -v | grep libc.so
62:     libc.so.5 => libc.so.5.4.46
246:    libc.so.6 => libc-2.1.2.so

> ldconfig -v | grep libdl
60:     libdl.so.1 => libdl.so.1.9.9
242:    libdl.so.2 => libdl-2.1.2.so

> ldconfig -v | grep libm.so
56:     libm.so.5 => libm.so.5.0.9
241:    libm.so.6 => libm-2.1.2.so

All required libs are there, but rpm still complains.
Could the reason be the fact that I have multiple versions
of each library (e.g. .5 and .6, or .1 and .2)?

Thanks.

The common wisdom is that you should not try to patch the Kernel source that
came with Red Hat. You should download the official Kernel Source from
kernel.org.

However, if you open the patch with a text editor you will note that the
third line (starts with "+++") refers to a directory. The one which I have
refers to: linux-2.2.16.c. You need to make a link with that name to the
base of your source tree for Patch to work by itself.

What's redhat got to do with it? You need to run debugfs if it's an
ext2fs, and possibly mc may help you out. It has an "undelete".

Let's all just get used to the fact that when you delete/remove a file,
it's history.
This is not DOS/Windows. Any REAL multi-tasking/-user system does
irrevocable things.

Word to that. Of course if you REALLY wanna get used to the fact that
what's gone is gone, 'chattr -R +s /' should do the trick. :)

Yeah, it would do if you didn't immediately mount -ro remount the
file system it's on, or yank the power plug and then carefully
guide fsck on reboot.

I've had success [at restoring an inode] both ways. Debugfs is getting
easier to use too. And I understand mc really does have a useful
interface to it.

I believe the easiest way, would be to get the source rpm. If you want to stay
with php3, get the updated source rpm from redhat's update site. The following link
is to a mirror since the official redhat site (updates.redhat.com) is difficult
to reach:
ftp://download.sourceforge.net/pub/mirrors/redhat/redhat/updates/6.2/SRPMS/php-3.0.17-1.6.2.src.rpm

Then you can install the srpm (rpm -i php-3.0.17-1.6.2.src.rpm) and edit the
spec file which will have been put in /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/. Change whatever
options you want, and then rebuild the rpm with
rpm -bb /usr/src/redhat/SPECS/php.spec (or whatever the spec file is called).

Then if it builds successfully, it will tell you where it wrote the new rpm,
and you can then install them with rpm -Uvh <file-name>.

You do not need to uninstall the old rpms first if you are replacing them with
rpms, as that will be taken care of by rpm itself with the "U" (upgrade)
option.

If you are unsure of the different compiling options available, installing the
source rpm will have put the source tarball, plus any additional RH patches, in
the /usr/src/redhat/SOURCES/ directory. You can then untar the sources and read the
docs in it, and also run the configure script with the --help option to get a list
of available options that you can use in the spec file.

I had a similar problem, until someone on this newsgroup pointed me to
the RH6.2 updates; the version of rpm there, rpm-3.0.5-9.6x, can handle the
newer packages.

I downloaded the latest driver, libs and utils, did "configure" and

It's usually bundled with the source for your distribution. For
eaxmple if you are running Red Hat it's on one of their distribution
disks. You can also go to their web site and grab a source RPM.

Usualy Friday about 4:00 p.m. Er, oh you mean the shell, ah well
that's usually started when you login! Although the system also
uses the shell when booting to start up the background programs(demons).

good recommendations? We need:

+ Good development env (incl OS and compiler support)

+ Easy to get started (i.e, not having to spend 10 hours to
figure out "how do I download my binary image on the damn

+ Serial I/O. Ethernet is desirable but not required

If you want to ssh to another system, and execute multiple commands there,
just do 'ssh othersystem'. If you want to execute a single command there,
'ssh othersystem command'. If you want to execute a single command as a

I agree. I was hoping for interface optimizations in KFM (ie, easier
ways to deal with filetypes and apps). Konqueror added a little of that,
but totally lost the ability to maintain a specific look per object
(folder, url, etc).

At least I figured out how to keep the blasted file tree out of the
picture.

Oh yeah...with KFM, it was trivial to use KFM with windowmaker to get
windowmaker's lovely light window manager with KFM's file management and
desktop icons. Now you have to run KDE's kdesktop as an application,
forcing it to the back of the screen with no titlebar, resize bar,
borders, etc. What a pain. You lose windowmaker's menus then too.
With some futzing around, I was able to leave a couple pixels free on
one side of the screen in order to get the windowmaker menu again.

I won't even get started on having to run kinit, which hasn't brought any
apparent functionality (why can't I delete email from kmail by dragging
to the trash can, for example?? or better yet, communicate with any K
apps in an intuitive way? Like dragging an image from a file manager to
the icon setting container for any object??). Object oriented? a little.
Object consistency? A little. Object interaction between KDE components?
None that matter.

Gotta disagree. With the older version, I had great optimism for
the project. They had the great start to a real OO system like OS/2
had in the WPS. I was really expecting to see this refined in KDE2.
INSTEAD, they just threw a bunch of worthless crap into Konqueror that
added NO FUNCTIONALITY OR EASE OF USE to the system, and in fact, got
rid of some of the nicer things that were in the older version.

Yes, the apps are coming along. Kmail is a little better than it was.
But as an environment? They've taken a huge step back in trying to
mimick Gnome and Windoze instead of continuing on the more unique route
they were on.

Let's hope they find their way back to their original path. There's a
reason I don't use windoze, and I'm sick of everything cloning that
god-awful interface and 'object model'

It runs right out of the box for me. If you installed apache and mod_perl, it
just works.

I run a production web driven database using HTML::EmbPerl on Mod_Perl at work
on RH7. It didn't take any extra configuration steps other than configuring
apache to recognize *.epl as embedded perl pages.

Uhh... Yeah I'm familiar with how to use SSH. typing "ssh

anyone's had as similar problem in getting their system to work, I
assume it's due to some permissions that were changed on a certain file
