Raster as opposed to vector graphics? Have you considered

Have a look for trplayer http://freshmeat.net.

Trplayer is a console app which plays real audio files.

Your extended partition only goes to cyl.750, so anything beyond
cylinder 750 will be invisible to any operating system.
Without formatting anything, use Linux fdisk to make the following
partitions:
 hda1 1-250 primary Win32FAT
 hda2 251-1245 extended
 hda5 251-499 Win32FAT
 hda6 500-750 Win32FAT
 hda7 751-760 ................ linuxswap
 hda8 760-1245 .............. linux native /

You should now be able to access the data on all partitions.
After securing your data, you should further make a small /boot
partition, before the / partition, so as to be sure that the boot kernel
is below the magic 1024 cyl boundary.

Your schema would then look like

 hda1 1-250 primary Win32FAT
 hda2 251-1245 extended
 hda5 251-499 Win32FAT
 hda6 500-750 Win32FAT
 hda7 751-760 ................ linuxswap
 hda8 760-760 .............. linux native /boot
 hda9 761-1245 linux native /

I new to this POV-Ray game, but notice that some 3ds modellers can offer
the sort of features you're after. So how about grabbing one of them and
the 3DWin 3ds->POV coverter?

Just a thought.

This is ridiculously complicated for such a simple task - especially
given the fact that mgetty does have its own mechanism to do exactly
what the poster wanted. See the excellent mgetty manpage and infopages
for the /etc/nologin.tty?? solution, and setup a simple cron job.

this is the location of the rpm databases, listing everything that's

How do I create users and groups without using yast? What are the
canonical commands to do this?

Also, do I have to set up a home directory for users? I want Apache,
PostgreSQL (which requires it) to have their own users and groups
without having an unnecessary /home directory or shell assigned to
them.

I am using SuSE 6.2. I am setting up Apache and PostgreSQL from
source, not from the distribution.

While I'm here, how does a user normally change his password?

Thanks for your thoughtful reply. I noticed that you mentioned Python, which
I am currently learning. I want to create a server-based application which
does quite a bit of processing triggered by requests from many users. Each
user request would generate a response to be sent back to the user. The
application would make heavy use of a database; I plan to use Oracle. Each
transaction with a user would fetch and often update data in the DB. I plan
to run this under linux on a fast PC.

My past programming experience was mostly in C during 1980-1995. I used to
know C very well. Now I'm halfway through "Learning Python" from O'Reilly,
but I haven't done any Python programming yet.

Any words of wisdom will be appreciated.

450MHz). Since i did this from floppies i didn't have the glibc and kernel
headers and sources on my hdd.
So i firstly installed them and made a "make config" in the kernel source
directory to build the version.h.
Then I compiled the glibc-2.1.3 sources. Everything was ok until i started
"make check":
The action was interrupted and i got the following message: "ld returned 1"

can anybody help me, with this???
