Hi,
Sounds like an IDE CD Writer... You will need to build a kernel with the
SCSI emulation switched on. Check out the file
/usr/doc/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO for details.
If possible I would put the Writer on the master jumper and the CD
reader on slave. Last time I tried XCDroast it wasn't happy about a
'slave' writer even though it showed up in the list of devices.
You will need to change the link /dev/cdrom to point to /dev/scd0 (I
think that is what the emulated disks become). No doubt the HOWTO will
mention this...

The one issue you should be aware of if you are using AMD to save
money is that you cannot go cheap on the memory. Linux really
needs to have good, high quality memory.
Also, if you have one of those motherboards that uses both kinds
of memory, be aware that the 72 pin implementation on some of
those motherboards is not very good. Return your 72 pin memory to
the store and get the good stuff.
I also had terrible problems with overheating the first time I
tried an AMD, but that was because I had a ribbon cable caught
in the fan. ;)

That lock file ought to be removed by Netscape when the user quits it.
It will not be removed if the user logs out without quitting Netscape
in "the right way" (using 'Exit' in the 'File' menu, or pressing
'Alt+Q').
In general, logging out (or killing X) without quitting your
applications is a really Bad Thing since most applications won't clean
up after themselves or have time to warn the user of unsaved work.
Your problem will be solved by instructing your users to quit all
applications before logging out. The file '~/.netscape/.lock' can be
removed manually if it exists and if Netscape is not running.

Hi,
I have recently compile the kernel 2.3.99-pre and tried to run my laptop
(VAIO-f480) with it.
The problem is that after kernel is started to load LCD goes blank and I do
not see anything. I tried a copule of thing but they did not help. Any clue?
By the way do I have to copy the new System.map file to /boot where the
kernel lies?

Why not simply using mgetty's built-in functionality? See "man mgetty",

It even works correctly - "not working correctly" in this case would mean
continuing to answer the phone but not letting you log in, in case you all

If you just want to restrict logins via mgetty to a set of allowed callers,
mgetty can do that too.

After reading this I went to check to see if I had it and found that
Slackware has a binary called `rename'. One of those little
things one doesn't know is there `til they stumble across it.
In the bash source one can also find a rename script in one of

Subject: Thread Scheduling Priorities
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 11:29:38 GMT
I hope this is the right newsgroup, I couldn't find a linux.programmer
group - apologies if this is sent to the wrong place.
I am currently porting a proprietary threading system my company uses
to Linux by converting our functions to call appropriate combinations
of LinuxThreads functions.
I have completed the work with one exception: thread priorities.
Our system supports 7 priorities (From Tortoise to Realtime) - however
even a priority realtime thread cannot completely lock up a lower
priority thread, and it certainly should not be able to lock up other
processes.
It would be desirable for the program not to need to be run with
superuser priveledges as well.
Effectively I need to be able to set priorities for SCHED_OTHER
threads - currently I can only do it by changing to SCHED_FIFO or
SCHED_RR, both of which have a far more drastic effect than is required.
Does anyone know of a way I can do this, I am using TurboLinux 6.0
(Based on Red Hat 6.0) and LinuxThreads.
Thanks,
Tim

If XF86Setup doesn't work, try xf86config, configure X to the best of
your knowledge using your system's documentation. You might have to
edit the finished XF86Config file and add the apropriate driver setting.
This page might help.

Subject: Quick questions : installing RPM's in X
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 08:36:43 -0400
Hi.
I am wondering how someone installs RPM in Gnome (redhat 6.2).
>From the command line, I can su in as root (because I am not normally
root) and install an rpm.
>From X I can't change my login without logging out of X, and logging
back into the system as root. When I am logged in as a normal user...I
get permission denied errors when trying to install an RPM
I tried, from within X, to open a terminal window and su in as root from
there...but that didn't give me root permissions in X (which I can
understand...just thought I would try it. (It did allow me to install
the RPM from the terminal window...but that isn't using the X
functionality to install an RPM )).
I figure there must be an easier way to install RPM's when using X ,
other than logging out and logging back in.
I'm checking out a few websites now for some info.
Anybody have a quick answer to this problem
Thanks.

I have MTRR support compiled in the kernel and there is a /proc/mtrr. The

[karl@boye karl]$ cat /proc/mtrr
reg00: base=0xe4000000 (3648MB), size= 16MB: write-combining, count=1

I've learned that there should also be at least one write-back register. Is
this correct? I get the same result using both RedHat's kernel 2.2.14-5.0 and

Left my system on for past week. I installed CorelDraw for Linux the last time
I used the computer. When I rebooted my computer (Redhat 6.2 on AMD) today,
it tries to go into the main Helixcode GNOME startup screen but continuously
attempts to get its resolution right. I see a black screen with the computer
trying to find a workable resolution it seems.
I do have (2) font servers running. One is the Fontastic server and the other
is X-Windows Font server. I am thinking this is what is giving me the problem.
Anyone got any ideas?
