Subject: ssl and mail (imap)
Date: Thu, 10 Aug 2000 14:02:49 -0400
I have downloaded stunnel (a program to allow non SSL ip daemons to have
ssl sessions). I compiled stunnel. I already have OpenSSL via rpm and
imap via the redhat 6.2 install. I created certificates as
stunnel.pem. I started stunnel with:
/usr/local/sbin/stunnel -d imap -l /usr/sbin/imapd -p
/usr/local/ssl/certs/stunnel.pem
IT started fine without errors accoring to /var/log/messages . I can
telnet to 127.0.0.1:145 (IMAP's default port), but when I try to connect
from netscape with the ssl option enabled, I can't connect and it times
out. BTW, when I connect via telnet, shouldn't I get a message that
says IMAPD or SSL? I searched for a ssl and stunnel log but couldn't
find one. What could be the problem? I realise that there are too many
possibilites, but please make suggestions. I will give you more info
about my system if you need. Thanks

You don't need a remote announce address (in your case). Why are
you announcing to yourself that you exist?
> domain master = yes
Are you following a book or something? You probably don't need that
parameter. How big is your network anyawy?
> domain logons = yes
Any particular reason for that? If not, comment it out.
> wins support = yes
Do you actually want Samba to act as a WINS server? If there's
no particular need, comment it out.
> dns proxy = no
The default is yes, but doesn't matter unless "wins support = yes".
It will prevent DNS lookups if the name isn't in the WINS database.
Unless you have DNS entries for some hosts, it doesn't matter.
> os level = 0
> preferred master = yes
> domain master = yes
These are all settings that are typically used to force the Samba
server to take control of the network browsing. Mixed with the
line "os level = 0" I think that it might cause problems though.
Again, unless you have a reason to set any of those, comment them
out.
> wins support = yes
Duplicated from above.
> dead time = 0
Bad parameter. It should be "deadtime = 0" which is the default
anyway.
> domain logons = no
You have "domain logons = yes" and the opposite down here.
> name resolve order = lmhosts, host, wins, bcast
Again, are you using wins? Try this instead.
name resolve order = lmhosts, host, bcast

192.168.1.255 is a broadcast address for the network 192.168.1.0
with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0. I don't know if that means
anything to you but basically it's the address used to announce
to all systems in that IP range. Apparently you don't have
broadcasts enabled for that interface. Assuming it's eth0, try
this.
ifconfig eth0 broadcast 192.168.1.255
_____________________________________________________________________
So what happened when you tried this (from my previous post)? I
know you said you've rebooted the workstations but I wasn't sure
if you followed this exact procedure.
Stop Samba and shut down the Win9x machines. After every single
one is down, bring them back up. They should be able to recognize
each-other by their names. If not, there's another problem. (Be
sure to bring them up and test them one at a time.)

We don't know, and can't tell you, because you haven't given us enough
information to go on. So, here's what you do:
1) open an Xterm window
2) enter the netscape command (netscape &)
3) tell us if there were any messages generated by netscape into the Xterm
(which sometimes happens when netscape has a problem).
4) tell us what those messages were
We'll ask further questions if necessary.

I checked, but the value is already set on '1'. So I guess, the problem
really is a routing problem. Do you have a suggestion, where I might
find further info on routing?

Don't know if any others has included it.

If /usr/bin/perl is a flavor of version 5, then you (or the sysadmin)
could add a symbolic link from /usr/local/bin/perl5 to /usr/bin/perl.

Yes SuSE does. It's in the kernel. You can chose AMD-3D support during

I'm sorry, imap's default port is 143, I just wrote 145 by accident

gig hdd, 40 meg ram, 11.3 tft display and a swappable 8x cdrom and
floppy drive. this setup is selling for $595.... first and foremost - is
this a good deal im getting? ive havent bought hardware in a while so im
quite out of the loop... also id like to know if anyone has any info
pertaining to running linux on this particular machine.. i know that
laptop drivers and such are seemingly rare, so...

With the SSL option enabled, Netscape will try to connect on port 993,
which is the standard port for secure IMAP, so you should change your
"-d imap" to "-d 993". If you telnet to the port on which stunnel is
running, you will get connected (as you note), but there is no IMAPD or
SSL prompt: stunnel is waiting to exchange and verify SSL information
before invoking IMAP.

I've set up an AMD K-6/3 3DNow on an Epox mobo , with 2x64MB PC-100RAM.
It's pretty nice. Yeah, you do need a good heatsink and a good ball
bearing fan.
