    Hello Folks,

I have tried to start the GNOME screensaver and for some reason it does
not show on the screen .... If I go into the
KDE area and start KDE's screensaver .... no problem .....

Is there some I can check with the GNOME area ???? I have already been
to the control panel .....

    Thanks Keith

i installed netscape6 in /usr/local/netscape/...

it makes a .mozilla/ directory in your home directory.

wasting these two directory trees should rid you of it.

Is there a way to have Windows 95/98/NT machines log into and use Linux as
an email, File server, and Firewall Serers??

If there is please let me know I am most interested in how to do this.

Thank you very much,

Daniel

I could be wrong, but I thought the NEC2000 driver worked with the
D-Link. But don't quote me on that! :-)

If you have somehow gotten a CMOS password, you'll probably have
to short the CMOS Reset jumper momentarily (1/2 second should do) on
the motherboard. Check the motherboard manual to find out which
jumper it is. Then you'll have to reset your CMOS settings.

Once you have the ability to boot from floppy, do that.
If your boot loader is LILO, you may be able to fix your problem
by passing an init level to the kernel that prevents trying to
go into X. On some distros, the init level for text mode is 3, on
some it is 2. Look at your documentation to see which it is.
If text mode is 2, try this at the lilo prompt

BOOT> linux init 2

This assumes that "BOOT>" is the boot prompt from LILO; that
the name of the kernel is "linux" and that run level 2 is the text
mode. From there, you can log on and fix "/etc/XF86Config" using the
program "XF86Setup". Another option on some distros is the program
"xf86config". Note that the case is different between the two
programs. I have always had better luck with "xf86config".

Subject: I don't understand my password encoding

In my passwd file I see this:

seif:$1$PpyX5YbW$Kd2cg7iBLKiwnU7be5H110:501:500:Erik
Sert:/home/seif:/bin/bash

what kind of encoding is this for the password. At 34 characters it's
not plain crypt. I thought maybe it was MD5, but I was unable to
reproduce this string with the Perl MD5 module. Can someone please tell
me how I can verify a user's password against this string, and how I can
know which encoding mechanism to use. Not all the entries in my passwd
file look like this. Some of the passwords are encoded with crypt, and I
know how to verify those.

Thanks in advance.

It would be interesting to know the client browser. I ran across a
similar problem when I was trying to control file downloads and found that
an earlier version of MSIE requested the files twice, maybe the first time
to use its own methods to guess the filetype (since it mostly ignores
Content-type) and again to get the file contents.

You should also note that if the URL does not specify a filename, apache
will redirect to a corrected URL with the required trailing slash. But I
would think that would generate something other than a 200 response (like
302?).

I don't know PICOBOOT, but I guess it's a linux-on-floopy distro

supply the C/H/S parameters of the HDD when booting, to force the use of
teh corrcet parameters.

I cannot be sure if this will solve anything, but that's your own fault,
telling us that some command "gives errors" isn't much to work with.

I've seen more messages like this, appearantly the LILO suplied with
RH7.0 is broken
(Yes it works on some systems, I know, but it may be a specific setup or
something)

Try using a bootfloppy from RH6.x, update LILO and rerun `/sbin/lilo`

First, you need to run "stty intr '^?'" on your SCO system when
connecting from a linux console. You need to do that as well if
your terminal type is any of vt100 and friends.

The Page up and Page down keys works perfectly with the vi command
on SCO unix 3.2v4.2 if you install the linux terminfo page using tic.

Subject: Can't mount or dd nonstandard floppy
Date: Mon, 27 Nov 2000 11:11:03 +0100

I have a stack of floppies from a (now defunct) Smith Corona wordprocessor.
A writer friend desperately needs the files on them. I can't figure out how
to mount the floppies, or even to sucessfully dd them. Help! My absolutely
non-techy buddy has his life's work on these floppies, and I can't let him
down. I'm on SlackWare 4.0.

Here's what I've tried so far-- excuse the verbosity of the output, I'm
hoping someone else has already trudged through this successfully, and don't
want to give too little information:

1) I logged on as root

2) After a standard "mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /floppy" failed, I tried doing
a dd to dump into the "file" utility to determine its type.
When I typed the command:
macondo:/home/tim/peter# dd if=/dev/fd0 | file -

I get the following:
standard input: x86 boot sector, system MSDOS5.0, FAT (12 bit)
floppy0: sector not found: track 0, head 0, sector 3, size 2
floppy0: sector not found: track 0, head 0, sector 3, size 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 2
dd: /dev/fd0: I/O error
2+0 records in
2+0 records out

3) Although there were errors, it looked like a FAT12 MSDOS disk. So I
tried a mount, using "msdos" as the type, with options fat=12, and
check=relaxed.  I experimented with different blocksizes (1024, 512...), and
eventually wrote a perl script to try every blocksize between 1 and 2048.
As it turned out, 1 was the only block size that allowed me to mount it. I
tried this command to mount to a local directory called "floppy":
macondo:/home/tim/peter# mount -t msdos -o fat=12,check=r,bs=1 /dev/fd0
floppy

and got this output:
mount: block device /dev/fd0 is write-protected, mounting read-only
floppy0: sector not found: track 0, head 0, sector 8, size 2
floppy0: data CRC error: track 0, head 0, sector 8, size 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 7

4) Again, there were errors, but I figured on pushing ahead. I did an ls on
the directory "floppy":
macondo:/home/tim/peter# ls floppy
how.pwl thanks.pwl trouble.pwl water.pwl zep.pwl
how.pwp thanks.pwp trouble.pwp water.pwp zep.pwp

5) And sure enough, I got a directory listing! Pretty excited now, I tried
copying "how.pwl" to the local directory:
macondo:/home/tim/peter# cp floppy/how.pwl ./how.pwl

and got the following error 16 times, with varying tracks, heads, and
sectors:
floppy0: data CRC error: track 0, head 0, sector 2, size 2
floppy0: data CRC error: track 0, head 0, sector 2, size 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 02:00 (floppy), sector 1
bread in fat_access failed
etc. etc. etc...

6) After this, I also tried just doing a straight dd to dump the entire
contents of the diskette to my hard drive, but never get beyond the first
2048 bytes, even with conv=noerror:
dd if=/dev/fd0 of=/files/temp conv=noerror
(however, vi'ing the resulting file did confirm that the disk at least has
the words "MSDOS FAT12" and some other nonreadable stuff in its first

thanks. -tim
