Then don't answer.
I've been reading and writing in the newsgroups for almost
10 years now, and certainly there are times when I feel like
making a smart-ass comment about some question I've seen a
few thousand times. Mostly, I refrain.
If the question really has been asked and answered a zillion
times, the poster will find it easily when he finally gives
up and does a search. However, very often these
zillion-asked questions are so eternally popular because
there's something wrong with the available documentation or
something about the area that just tends to trip up a lot of
people. It may very well be that "man mount" or "man fstab"
will point this person in the right direction, but sometimes
it doesn't hurt (assuming you want to bother with an answer
at all) to throw in a little extra information. Over the
years, I found myself doing that so often that I took my
most common replies and put them on a web page in the form
of articles, and now I very often refer people to a specific
snippet on my own site.
I admit that sometimes I am nonplussed by the incredible
stupidity and apparent helplessness of some petitioners.
However, even after more than 30 years of computer
involvement and almost 20 years of Unix, I'm still often
surprised by my own incredible stupidity and apparent
helplessness. Therefore, if I'm going to answer, I try to
remember to take a deep breath and be as patient as so many
others have been for me when I've been (temporarily, I hope)
a dumbass moron without a clue.

man mount
man fstab
I have 6 Win95 partitions with mount points set up for each. D: was created
to fill the "hole" vacated by dedicating my 2nd physical drive to Linux and
serves as a safe and convenient conduit between Windows and Linux. It is
mounted at boot, readable by all, writable by root. The other Win partitions
can be manually mounted on those rare occasions that I need something on
them.
[rj@localhost rj]$ cat /etc/fstab
/dev/hdc6 / ext2 defaults 1 1
/dev/hdc1 /boot ext2 defaults 1 2
/dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy ext2 noauto 0 0
/dev/cdrom /mnt/cdrom iso9660 noauto,users,ro 0 0
none /proc proc defaults 0 0
none /dev/pts devpts mode=0622 0 0
/dev/fd0 /dos/a vfat noauto,users,rw
/dev/hda1 /dos/c vfat noauto,users,ro
/dev/hda5 /dos/d vfat users,rw
/dev/hda6 /dos/e vfat noauto,users,ro
/dev/hda7 /dos/f vfat noauto,users,ro
/dev/hda8 /dos/g vfat noauto,users,ro
/dev/hda9 /dos/h vfat noauto,users,ro
/dev/hdc5 none swap sw
Note that I created the /dos directory with subdirectories for each logical
drive including A: rather than using the /mnt directory that the RH installer
created to avoid any confusion on my part. Confusion was rampant around here
when I first installed Linux.
I hope this helps.

Date: Sun, 13 Aug 2000 13:03:42 GMT
Hi there,
I just bought a second-hand Sony SCSI Tape Drive SDT-5000. Has anyone
got this working on Redhat 6.1. I have got a Tekram DC-315U Ultra
SCSI adapter.
Please let me know if this tape drive works on Linux, as I have a week
to return it. Also, what kind of sotware/firware do I need to get this
drive to work. I could not find this drive on the Sony website. They
only have the newer drives (SDT-7000 upwards).
Your advise is greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

Subject: Midnight commander and rpm packages browsing problems
Hi Folks!
I use mc to browse through rpm packages' directory structure. It works
fine with mc4.5.40 but newest versions don't allow for this: they only
show basic info on the package (header, install and upgrade scripts
links etc) but no directories and files. I've tried to figure out the
command mc issues to rpm to do this but seemingly they are identical.
Does somebody know what should I change to retrieve the old behaviour in
newer mc versions?
Thanks for your help.

I used FrameMaker on Linux for some time, and it is the nearest to DTP
you can get. BTW, I changed the colours so that it fits nicely with my
Gnome desktop. FrameMaker is fast, powerful and it is a native port, unlike
WordPerfect.

HRm....
Why someone wouldn't want to tailor their kernel to the hardware they have is
beyond me.... The machine boots and runs faster if it doesn't have to wade
through 400 different card drivers, insert modules, etc, just to get eth0
working.
But then again, maybe I'm willing to work for something good, rather than
accepting what someone else has done as "ok".

I didn't meant to offend you. I don't know the layout of your network
so I was making an assumption that you have a firewall with port
fowarding that's not working properly. You connect to the same IP
address from the internal network? Can you describe the network a
little more?

A few random suggestions:
1) in smb.conf, allow_hosts=192.168.0.* did not work; I had to name
them
individually (IP addrs in /etc/hosts).
2) Do you have encrypted/unencrypted password confusion? By default
Win98
uses encrypted passwords and Samba uses unencrypted => failure.

I wasn't offended. I'm sorry if my response was a little curt. :)
I am runnig rh6 on a small server that is running squid proxy for two win98
clients and is also doing some port forwarding for other protocols (icq
etc).
I meant that I had checked the ip I am getting assigned by my isp with the
one I try to telnet into from outside my network (the internet) and I only
get a password prompt. inetd.conf and my hosts files are not the problem.
Thanks in advance.

Try using the 'wwwoffl' proxy. It's primary purpose is to cache documents for
viewing later, offline (very handy with a dial-up link). BUT it's docs say
something about changing what browser info is forwarded. I don't know exactly
what all can be changed (don't have the docs available at the moment) but I am
reasonably sure you can configure wwwoffl to give out whatever info you want.

Well, you could follow the messages advice, and go away. At least until
you start to exist, which, according to some, is just after you start
to think </smartass>.
But the message in itself is quite clear. You don't exist. Your ID does
not appear in the passwd file (or whatever you are using as an
authentication source - a NIS map, perhaps).
Since you give me no helpful information, such as: on what machine does
this appear, who are you, which is your server, which is your client,
what are you doing when you get this message .. I refrain from putting
myself out to help you until you put yourself out to help me help you.
In the meantime, I suggest you examine the passwd files and NIS maps
on all the machines involved. Does your passwd file terminate in +:::::
(or equivalent), for example, on the NIS client?

Are they properly jumpered as 'master' and 'slave'. Maybe the hd is
