Subject: ? RH62 peculiarities
Date: 13 Sep 2000 20:10:25 GMT
Hi,
with some experience in 'old' Slakware, I installed RedHat6.2
ten days ago - so I've got some linux familiarity.
Last night I re-installed RH62 to another HD/partition, so I'm qualified
to comment/criticise, from a new RH62 user's view point.
1. the CD-ROM installation, from DOS using the *.bat , soon enters a GUI
to complete the installation. This GUI is automatic: re. mouse type/port
and video-card and VDU. And quiet satisfactory, as a GUI.
If the installer can make a trouble free GUI, why must I pull my hair out
to get a valid configuration to run startx ??? Why doesn't the installer's
settings just stay as the defaults ?
2. Pity that gnome had to follow the M$cartoon-style = SLOW.
The 1st installation was for a friend who admits WIN9X crashes regularly.
Initially he might be more familiar with M$cartoon-style gnome,
but could later graduate to fvwm. My attempt to make 2 single line
scripts, to select either of the win-managers, fails:
(switchdsk gnome ; startx ) AND
(switchdsk AnotherLevel ; startx ) . Why ?
{ if I read quickly, I see the trace re. switchdisk ...}
Some other enquirer also described how he had to reboot (actually
I can use another vt), to succeed startx, once it fails, with switchdsk .
3. on the second install, I skipped gnome (and kde), and selected some
servers instead (space available). Now I haven't got mc !!
Midnight commander is my number ONE ap. I can't live without it !!
Where/how is the list of aps. which can be installed (from the CD) ?
How do I install mc ?
4. AFTER you've got Linux installed and X-configured (if you don't have
a nervous breakdown), gnome has nice instructions to 'install linux'.
Yes AFTER it's installed ! Actually some of gnome's documentation
doesn't work, and the 'file-missing ID' as given by the error-mesg.
differs from the corresponding file name on the CD. ! ?
5. My RH62 CD which my ex-M$win friend bought at an exhibition
has the penguin Logo, but has no serial number visible. Is it original ?
Thanks for any answers/advice also emailed to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
in case I miss this NwsGroup.

its a process that has died, but hasn't been cleaned up by the kernel
yet. essentially a zombie. it occupies NO system resources, other than
space on the process table. zombie processes normally drop off the
process table eventually, or with a reboot, whichever occurs first.

Subject: Newbie question on Open Source SW
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 20:07:47 GMT
I am a business researcher doing some work on the
open source movement. I'd like to get some
feedback from users on a couple of issues that I
want to understand at the "grass roots" level vs.
just taking what the business press says as
gospel.
1. Why would you choose (or not choose) to buy or
use a commercialized ("branded")version of Linux
or Apache vs. just using the other freely
available versions (under GNU or other copyleft
arrangement).
2. What do you think are the pros and cons of
the "branded" versions of Linux or Apache (Red
Hat being the most widely known example)?
3. Is selling branded open source software a
good idea? Why or why not?
I'm just looking for opinions from real people.
Thanks!

memory?? I am working on a project that would like to reserve the

Subject: X-windows newbie question
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 13:20:00 -0700
This is quite a newbie question I'm sure. If the answer is rtfm, could
you please point to the right "fm"?
I've spent just about forever getting an XF86 server to run (RH 6.1,
486DX 66, w/ evergreen upgrade chip and 24meg -- not that it matters
much, it's working now) On running startx, Gnome windows manager runs
as expected. I don't understand, however, the relationship between X
and Gnome and KDE. I assume that Gnome must be running to run Gnome
Programs. Same for KDE and KDE Programs. What about Programs that are
supposed to run under "X"? Are gnome or KDE needed for these? If not,
how are they invoked? Seems to me I need an X-windows primer of some
kind, but if it is in the documentation on the CD, then I completely
missed it.
Any thoughts?

If the two machines are on the same network, then an
ping 10.0.0.7
/sbin/arp -a | grep 10.0.0.7
However, if the machines are on different network, then you are out of luck.
I put the ping there so the MAC address of 10.0.0.7 is in the arp cache.

Subject: Can anyone help me out?
Date: Wed, 13 Sep 2000 20:27:29 GMT
I am new to Linux (so I have a very DOS/Windows mind) and I need some help
installing Slackware. Actually, ZipSlack, the version of slackware made for
FAT partitions... actually, its BigSlack. ZipSlack's big counterpart
(includes Gnome and an X Windows interface).
Ok, now, here's my problem: I know how to configure the linux.bat file to be
directed to my partition (only because that is obvious) so when I got into
the graphical setup process and chose SOURCE (I'm installing from 'd:\linux'
to the same directory) it asked me where I'm installing from. I chose hard
disk. It asked for the location on the hard disk, so, because all the files
are at d:\linux, I just entered '/' (no quotes) and it says, ok... then it
asks for another location (most likely where to install it to, I forget) and
I enter '/'. Then, it tells me it couldn't find '/' even tho it accepted it
for the instalation source... what's up with that?
Please forgive my, sometimes moronic, remarks but I really couldn't find any
help for this anywhere I looked. I followed help links from the slackware
site and from linux.com
If you can, please, do help me solve this as I can no longer stand windows.
and must move to linux as soon as possible.

I tried to kompile one 2.4.test8 now three times and for some reason

jfd,
If I'm not mistaken (help me out here, guys...), the drivers are located
in the Xfree86 distribution. You didn't mention which Linux distribution
(i.e. RedHat, Suse, Caldera, etc.) or version you were running. I
believe Xfree86 version 3.3.3 or 3.3.6 has the 6326 drivers you need.

Okay, a couple or three points.
Firstly, I've also found the dependencies problem to be a
little frustrating, sometimes. The reality, though, is that
it sort of depends on your perspective. For example, why
should you be forced to download a bunch of libraries along
with a piece of desired software when you might already have
the ones you need. These rpm downloads seem to be configured
to give you what you're most likely to need but not
necessarily ALL of what you need. If your libs are all up to
date (they change frequently), no problem. If, on the other
hand, they're not, you'll have to enter the
download-a-bunch-of-stuff-to-satisfy-dependencies loop. This
can get quite bad, sometimes. I was trying to install
something last week that told me I was missing a lib. No
worries, I figured, I'll go get that lib. Okay, now, when I
tried to install that lib, it told me I was missing
something else, so I downloaded that. Well, same thing,
again. In the end, I had to download 6 different packages to
get my original one program running. Hey, at least it tells
you what you need! :-)
Secondly, get to know www.rpmfind.net, www.tucows.com and
www.freshmeat.net. These are gonna be your new friends. When
you go to rpmfind, for example, and prepare to download a
package, it brings up an html screen that shows what the
package provides and what it requires. At this point, you
can check if you have everything it requires (which I
sometimes do. *grin*) If not, that list is actually links so
you can go get what it is you're missing. There's a nice
search thing on there, too, where you can enter the name of
the library you're missing and it'll take you to the
packages that provide that library. For your case, check out
http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/sourceforge//kimap//kimap-0
.1.4-1.i386.html and you'll see that it indicates that you
need libjpeg.so.6, as well as a bunch of other stuff.
Finally, learn to use the command rpm -q
somefileIwanttocheck. For example, to see if you have kimap
already installed on your system, you could type rpm -q
kimap. If you have it, it'll return the version info and all
of what you have installed. If it's not installed, it'll
tell you that, too...
I guess, in the end, my advice to you is to be patient and
to do a lot of web scouring when something like this
happens. It seems frustrating to you, perhaps, right now
but, soon, you'll be doing it in your sleep! In my case, I
fell asleep the other night downloading a bunch of stuff so,
I guess, in my case I've done it both literally as well as
figuratively in my sleep. ;-)

Presumably the "arqisgi1" part is the name of the machine you want to
mount from?

This is because Linux (currently) implements NFSv2, not NFSv3.

My first guess is that there is a hostname mismatch. Either you
mistyped (it seems likely given the name) or the lookup is going awry.
Try not using the FQDN.

Subject: Virus ?

This is something I have never encountered before installing the current
version of Linux that I have. Maybe someone can tell me what's up.
This has happened more than once to me with various files of the same type
(text files).
I'm running 2.2.15. I have a simple, short text file (about 900 bytes).
The file contains no non-ASCII characters, and nothing otherwise funny
or weird. If I execute the "file" command on the text file I get:
"fsav (linux) virus (295545-84)"
If I try to lpr the file I get:
"No way to print this type of input file: fsav (linux) virus (295545-84)"
If I insert a blank line at the top and at the bottom of the file then
everything is fine.
What's going on?

Yes, I use a 20 MB boot partition, then the rest, 6.5 GB
is all Linux :-)
