Under Redhat Linux 6.2, I am in the midst of trying to convert a simple
latex2e document with equations into html using latex2html.
It is having a tough time converting a the file. I have a math symbol
in it. I keep getting:

The fatal error for pstoimg seems the trouble, but I am not sure why it
is happening. I looked through the Troubleshooting in the latex2html
manual, but did not see this problem.
There is a pstoimg, I have ppmtogif and pnmtopng. I am using
latex2html 99.1 release.
Any ideas? What versions of ppmtogif and pnmtopng work? I have no
idea why nothing is coming out...
Any pointers would be very appreciated!

I was just trying to say that the comment "Linux doesn't do much besides
running Internet servers on PC's" was far from the truth.

Well, "is it of any use to me" is a totally different question. What do
you want to use it for?
> -- and I haven't even figured out how to switch from one

That's because you don't.
MS-DOS keeps each drive's directory tree totally apart from the others.
To go to a specific directory on a specific drive, you have to set the
"current drive" as well as the "current directory". Under Linux (and
all Unix systems) all drives simply appear as part of a single directory
tree, and you have control as to where in the tree each drive appears.
(Except for the primary, which always starts at "/".) If that makes you
uncomfortable (coming from a DOS background) you can always call the
"mount points" for the other drives "/D:", "/E:" and so on.

Well, back to your question "is it of any use to me?" If you can
describe what you want, and post to one of the comp.os.linux.*
groups (I have cc'd this to comp.os.linux.misc), then I'm sure you
can get a good answer.

Subject: Recording using a SoundBlaster Live - can YOU do it?
Date: Fri, 15 Sep 2000 18:18:03 +0100
This is a follow-up to a previous posting of mine.
I am running Debian 2.2, kernel 2.2.17pre6, emu10k1 driver (20000721) with
a SoundBlaster Live 1024.
I could not get a recording, using the line input socket, to produce any
sound when played back.
Someone suggested trying the Microphone socket and that, indeed produces a
recording that does play back albeit at a rather low volume level even
with the Microphone recording level, on the mixer, at maximum.
The same card will produce acceptable recordings using the line input
socket and the Windows software that was supplied with the card. I really
don't want to do it that way!
Has anyone else experienced this? Do you have a solution or an explanation?

I have now tried your suggestion of using the microphone socket and it
does work. However the sound level is quite low - it needs the microphone
recording level at its maximum to produce anything audible.
I find this to be very strange as the same recording setup produces an
acceptable recording under Windows when using the line input socket. It
doesn't seem to make any sense.

plays in a box in the center of a black screen.. oh well. I can expand

I think you'll find od fits the bill. For hex output, use it as:

Crap. For years Ms has been the only produce because
the stores sell nothing else. The average user gets a PC pre-installed
and couldn't install windows any easier than linux. Out here in the
country I have to drive twice as far for a loaf of bread than a pc
with windows. The masses don't want choice they want a a loaf of
bread or a button to push. As far as Ms being the best thing
available thats real crap, for most people it's just the only thing
available.
Availability will come with with large companies finding a
business model were they can make a buck from something that's
given away. If the numbers that I have read are correct, companies like
IBM and Dell make more money off of installing windows than MS does
and money talks.
You might get the impression from this post that I think that
MS sucks and that's wouldn't be that far from the truth. Windows is very
poor value for the money. The basic package is a lame workstation.
This could be one of the reasons that slows Linux acceptance as a consumer
produce (who wants to disable so much)? This could give companies a chance
to make a buck selling easy installation packages to the consumers.
They could come up with neat acronyms like RPM or DEB and put buttons
on it.
MS seems to be changing it's distribution model to a warped
form of service style with their web install stuff,as apposed to their
rabid crack dealer style of world domination (got to stick in a poke
here and there:). Other companies like those virus scan people seem to
be going that way to (subscription). This in itself could drive a lot of
people away from MS. Without the ability to steal software the real cost
of ownership is very high. How many home users really spend $300 for
Ms office or a $100 for a virus scanner. Maybe someday you will have to
subscribe to Nortons to get a disk defraged (10 for a buck that will
break the bank).
The acceptance of linux as an alterative to windows
won't happen because linux has a better GUI (which it has),or that it's
more stable (which it is ) or that it's better value (which it s).
Lets face it linux and windows are very easy to use when they come
preinstalled and they can do more things than the average user requires.
It will happen when people can make a buck off it. Maybe something like
OEM Linux. Then you will see it on all the shelves like ms and
tupperware.
I like linux on the desktop. It's not that hard to install
and it's as easy to use as you want it to be. There are far more
applications than I have time to learn. I think lot more people would
really enjoy using if it came preinstalled.
BTW I don't care what MS does as long as their doing it someplace else.

Use Partition Magic, it works great, and very easy to use.

I've heard from a few sources that using 3/2 the amount of physical RAM in
your system is best (as long as it doesn't exceed 128MB). So if you've got
32mb RAM, do a 48mb swap. I've also heard *just* the amount is good, and
even twice the amount. In any case, don't exceed 128mb in a single swap
partition. You can always create more than one, but it's really not
necessary (IMHO) unless you're running a very high-load server or something.
