what's wrong with the traditional unix tape & backup utilities? you
can use mt to set the compression mode on the drive (generally a bad
idea). for backups, there's tar, cpio, and dump. it's pretty easy to
run any of these as regular cron jobs. i'm using dump here. in fact,
i just restored my whole fs (don't ask why...) dump and restore
saved the day.

I am a newbie to Linux and currently have a winmodem. I really want to ditch
Windows completely and wondered if USB modems are supported under the new
2.4.0 kernal? Or should I stick to serial ext modems? Any advantages to
either?

Thanks

Did you configure one of the ppp serial port components
(CONFIG_PPP_ASYNC or CONFIG_PPP_SYNC)? Gotta have one of those...

First of all, don't multipost.
I've seen this post in col.setup too.
If you want to post in multiple groups, make a crosspost

Now I really don't know how you can have such strange behaviour,
but perhaps you have supplied a strange mount option?
How did you try to mount the zip drive

I'm using leafnode for collecting news, with Netscape as my newsreader.

The problem is that whenever I post from leafnode, fetchnews (run with
the parameters -vvv -P) gives the reply "xxx already exists upstream",
where xxx is the message number leafnode has assigned. Posting directly
from Netscape to my newsserver gives no problems.

I couldn't find any references to this kind of probem in the
documentation, either online or on my system.

What am I doing wrong?

Subject: Installation problem on laptop using pcmcia cd-rom drive
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 13:12:51 GMT

 Hello,

I'm trying to install redhat6.2 or 7 into a laptop using pcmcia cd-rom drive. So I
made pcmcia.img floppy disk and booted.
At first time it seemed everything is fine. But after I got the cd-rom drive
initialized and, lanugage and keyboard selection,
What I see is the following installation stage;

What type of media contains the package to be installed?

            Hard drive

That's all. I have no choice. If all goes fine, I have to see other options including
'cd-rom.' Yet I can't.
I don't know why I can't see other options but Hard drive. The pc card cd-rom is
Toshiba ATAPI 20x. And as I know, all ATAPI
should work during installation. And when I enter ctl+alt+F4 I can know the pcmcia.img
disk detected the cd-rom drive like that;

hdc: Toshiba ATAPI 20x cd-rom ...

Is there any idea?

Hi all,

How can I redirect error messages generated by a perl script into log
file and still see these messages on the
terminal?
I'm able to redirect the messages to a file, for example:
somescript 2> logfile
but then I don't see these messages on the terminal anymore.

Many thanks in advance,

You misunderstand the question.

The question is does it make a difference if one or the other is built
into the kernel.
If I build only one in, does one results in better kernel preformance?
Does one drag the kernel down?

Of course there are preformance difference between building in a
module into the kernel and loading it seperately. That's why you
rebuild kernels in the first place.

They are. USB Just Works(TM). I've got a very nice little 56K v90 USB
effort myself, and as long as you `modprobe acm' it works. Bear in mind
that currently, for me, USB is done on PPC, and this is some relatively
unknown modem I got in a semi-Mac shop (ie the left half of the shop is
colourful ;)

(I wouldn't mind if I could find it on the web someplace to give you a URL;
it's probably a MacSurfer or something, it's got a Lucent chipset inside,
it's translucent light-grey plastic with two sockets and has one Big Green
Flashy LED; if you were sleeping in the same room as your machinery, you're
not now!)

The USB thing has been giving me a consistent 5.3K/s or so against
UKlinux.net. Feels a bit nippier than serial. Make sure you get a receipt
is the best advice :)

I'll second that. What have you got against letting the drive do the
compression, though?

I'm tarring directly onto an HP 4/8 GB DDS2 drive with the drive doing
the compression. The drive manual indicates that this gives faster
transfer rates than uncompressed writes (which you would expect) and
it has the benefit of offloading compression from my slow (P133 ) box.

It's support in XFree86 4.0.* with the r128 X module... It's also somewhat
supported in XFree86 3.3.6, but not nearly as well.

GL acceleration: soon. The DRI folks at VA linux are working on the necessary
PCI GART kernel support for the card... After that's done, 3D support should
be up and running.

TV-Out: Some have reported success with using X on top of the framebuffers.

TV-In: The gatos developers have integrated all of their work into the Xv
extension, allowing for TV viewing with xawtv. Recording is still not possible
at the moment.

You need to log on before you can discover any of this, though. So, can you
log on as root ??

If so, look in /etc/passwd for your login name.
The password will be encrypted in /etc/shadow, and so you'll not be able to
read it. Instead, if you're logged as root, change your password using 'passwd
logonid newpasswd'

Then log out, and log back in as yourself, or 'su - logonid'

running pretty fast.
telnet connections take 30 sec. to 90 sec. to prompt for login.
everything at the console takes 30 sec. to 1.5 min. to run. i launched
netscape
and it took 1.5 min. to start. even typing the chmod command took 30 sec. to
excute.
we looked at everything in the nt4.0 box that could affect it but could not
find any reason why. every computer is running tcp-ip only.

thank you,
kenny.

Hm? I say, don't take that interview as non-biased, since at the time
they answered those questions they had a vested interest.

Who cares if they were biased before getting involved with Linux? None
of us had heard of them!

Hi

I have a printer connected to lp0. When I try

# echo "TEST" > /dev/lp0

it hangs. It does print but it looks like if it was printing. I really
need to make my linux print. Any ideas?

Subject: Junkbuster + Squid fails to block on some sites
Date: Wed, 10 Jan 2001 14:36:52 GMT

When I use Junkbuster alone, it properly blocks the banner ad atop
www.drudgereport.com (there are others, but this is an example).

However, when I put Squid in the loop, the blocking fails (the ad is displayed).

I have it set up like this, which I believe is the recommended configuration:

Squid:
   listens on port 3128

Junkbuster:
   listens on port 8000
   forwards to localhost:3128

Mozilla:
   proxy server set to localhost:8000

...so I presume the chain of events is:

Browser forwards URL request to localhost:8000
   Request is received by Junkbuster
If in blocklist, returns single-pixel image
   If not in blocklist:
      Forwards request to localhost:3128
      Request is received by Squid
If current data is cached, it returns it from the cache
If not in cache, fetches it from the original location and returns it

Since Junkbuster intercepts the request before it gets passed to Squid, why
should it even matter if Squid is in the picture?

Any ideas what might be going on?

Thanks

Then you had luck. As for normal modems, there are also Win-USB-modems around.
They consist mainly of a line interface and an AD-converter. The "sound" goes into
the PC via USB, the CPU has to do the rest. These modems are not supported and
propably will never be supported.
I have a Elsa Microlink USB, and it works with the ACM-driver (its a real
modem...)

Urgh.
No surprise. The ipchains stuff was added when going to the 2.1 and 2.2
kernels. Prior to that , you had to use ipmasqadm, IIRC .

Update to 2.2.14 or later.

I don't understand the question -- surfing is something you do in the
ocean, are you saying you're trying to use a notebook computer on
a surfboard? Doesn't the salt spray corrode all the electronics?
(Maybe that's what's causing the problem?)
