I had posted a question a couple of days ago about the boot loader hanging
at 'LI'. A reply to a related question made the suggestion to boot from
floppy and run FDISK /MBR. I did this (after cd'ing to C:, the drive bearing
the MBR). I am a relative newbie to Linux and Windows, being a Mac native,
and I can only assume that the function FDISK restores a default
configuration to the MBR, but in any case LILO no longer intervenes and
Windows loads normally. Now to try to fix the origin of the problem....

Rebooted? Why?

It isn't (more accurately, it isn't possible).

It's unreasonable to expect everything to work transparently with a foreign
filesystem. The file did get copied: cp is just warning you that the chmod
failed.

> I do not use the -p on cp,...

Doesn't matter: you can't preserve file attributes when copying to a
filesystem that has none.

What's that in aid of?

It isn't. You can't change the ownership of a file on a filesystem that
doesn't support file ownership.

"Funny"? Linux can do nothing about the absence of file attributes from a
Microsoft filesystem.

Get what working? I haven't seen your original article.

This may or may not be helpful, but the scripts in ip-up.d (and ip-down.d)
at least on Debian use the run-parts script, for which there is also
a man page.

run-parts can be manually executed with the script-name using the --test
option and the --verbose option which can give you a bit of debug info.

On 32-bit platforms it's the 2 gigs you just hit. This limit is removed
in the 2.4-series kernels (currently in testing phase), though you of course
need a recent enough libc as well, and to compile the app with a 64-bit
size_t.

Support for 64-bit sizes has also been backported to the 2.2-series, and
I believe at least Red Hat's default kernel has the patch included.

Also, on 64-bit platforms 64-bit files are of course supported.

Unless I'm wrong, there currently is no support for /dev/sequencer with
the alsa drivers. You can look into timidity++ to get a pseudo
/dev/sequencer; that's what I'm trying to do right now.

ext2fs has a filesize limit of 2GB, I'm sorry.

Well you could write a script combining a here-doc and ftp -in.
You could write a similar script using Perl or Expect. But,
by far, the easiest way is:

wget ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/solaris/freeware/SOURCES/Tk800-022.tar.gz

No, you have _not_ reached a filesystem limit. ext2 supports files as
large as 2TB in size.

Apparently your version of VFS and the interface from there to LIBC and
on to the dd application does not support this.

ext2fs has a file size limit of _2TB,_ I'm sorry, but the limit that
is being hit is _not_ a filesystem limit, but rather a limitation in
the interface between VFS and GLIBC on 32 bit platforms.

Apple was (and is) available the entire time, regardless of lesser
known (to the general public) alternatives.

And the reason that most stores carried primarily MS based systems
is because that's where the demand was. Sure, they could have
carried Amiga's and such instead, but the demand wasn't there.

That's the first thing I'd check.

If you have a system that uses rpm, you should check a few basic packages:

rpm -V util-linux

Do the same for procps, fileutils, bash, net-tools, and sysklogd. You're
looking to see if binaries like /bin/login, ps, top, ls, dir, netstat, and
syslogd have been modified. The codes are

       5 MD5 sum

       S File size

       L Symlink

       T Mtime

       D Device

       U User

       G Group

M Mode (includes permissions and file type)

If any binaries have changed size or MD5 sum, you've probably been rooted.
In that case, you should backup, reinstall the OS, and install any security
updates for your distro. This does assume they haven't messed with the rpm
database.

freshmeat.net is the place to look for stuff like this. See

Er, I think you should reevaluate the meaning of "very important" ;}

linuxmall.com, maybe.

I like grip together with cdparanoia and gogo. See freshmeat.net for links.

I use Netscape 4.76 at work (Red Hat rpm). It's decent IMO, though
definitely showing it's age. Most of the bitching about it is somewhat
exaggerated.

As for Netscape 6 betas, I would recommend trying the nightly Mozilla builds
instead. See www.mozilla.org.

3) VMS. It's one letter behind WNT, Windows NT, and is 40% better
than Linux due to having 40% fewer letters. (And is likely
   more reliable than either...)

4) OpenBSD. Its logo is a blowfish, and is 40% better than Linux
due to having 40% additional letters.

5) Eros. It is a capabilities-based system with a pretty sexy name,
and is a successor to KeyKOS, another cool name reminiscent of the
   Keystone Kops.

Yes, you've found the limit.

You can move to a 64-bit platform.

>or any plans on making ext2 handle larger files?

You can get a kernel patched for Large File Support, which allows you to get
around the limit on 32-bit systems. Red Hat, for instance, has such a
kernel at

http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/enterprise/RHSA-2.2.16-4.lfs.html
