I am trying to have Netscape use the Mail folder on one of my DOS
partitions, so as to keep all the mail in one place. This works fine for
root, but as a user Netscape can't do this because the user lacks write
permission for the file. Not surprising so far, but no matter what I
try, I can't add write permission for this set of files for "anyone" but
the owner, root. I have fooled around with groups and alternate users,
tried the graphical permission, console 'chmod', but nothing ever
changes. I never get any errors, just no result. I found a place to
change root's ability to make changes from 700 and put 777 just to see,
but even then, nothing. How can it be that root can write to these
files, but cannot bestow permission on "anyone" else?

Um, no, I'm afraid. The MacOS user on the LAN uses Adaptec's Toast
software to create the CD image, then copies it across here for
burning.
I can only suggest you either get a copy of Toast, or read man
mkhybrid.
Sorry to be of little help,

Thanks for all your suggestions. I have not modified the kernel. It is a
standard Red Hat 6.1 install.
I added the 'alias scsi_hostadapter aic7xxx' to /etc/conf.modules
and re-booted but the system still can't see the SCSI tape drive.
/sbin/lsmod does not show either st.o or aic7xxx.o.
# /sbin/lsmod
Module Size Used by
3c59x 19112 1 (autoclean)
#
aic7xxx.o and st.o are present at /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/scsi/aic7xxx.o
and /lib/modules/2.2.12-20/scsi/st.o
Can't figure out why they are not being loaded.
Any additional info will be very helpful.
Thanks.

The Linux SCSI subsystem is split up into several parts: lowlevel
drivers for each SCSI card (Adaptec 1542, Symbios 53c8xx, IDE-SCSI
emulation), basic SCSI support (scsi_mod), support for SCSI disks
(sd_mod), support for SCSI CD-ROMs (sr_mod), support for SCSI tapes
(st_mod) , and support for SCSI generic devices like CD-RWs and scanners
(sg). A SCSI CD-ROM is treated as a block device, while a SCSI generic
device is treated as a character device. Reading a CD-ROM goes through
the block device, while writing to a CD-R(W) goes through the character
device, because the timing problems that can occur with a block buffer
cache make it much more difficult to burn a good CD. That requires the
sg module to load.
Also, just because it boots from a SCSI device doesn't mean that the
appropriate SCSI modules are even available. Booting always uses the
SCSI card or the machine's BIOS, and RedHat by default puts all the SCSI
stuff into an initial RAMdisk. The BIOS loads the kernel image and the
RAMdisk, then passes control to the kernel. If the SCSI modules aren't
there, you'll get a kernel panic, but that's obviously not happening.
The sg module should be under /lib/modules/$VERSION/scsi/sg.o
>Better yet, is there another CD burning application out there that's
>less flaky than this one?
There's cdrdao, but it's really only for burning audio CDs. cdrecord is
*NOT* flaky; you just have things set up incorrectly. I suggest you go
read the CD-Writing-HOWTO, follow its directions exactly, and report
back if you have trouble.

Because the DOS FAT filesystem lacks the concept of permissions.
Therefore, all files on a DOS partition will be owned by the same user
and have the same permissions, these attributes are set at mount time,
and there's no way to change them with chmod/chown/chattr.
This is almost a FAQ; there are many many posts dealing with this. One
solution is to mount the DOS partition with "umask=000", this will leave
all files on the DOS partition wide-open for anyone to read/write.

How do you burn an HFS CD? I've tried to burn MkLinux to CD with cdrecord
but apparently it loses some of the critical HFS information.

I'm having the exact same problem with GTK-Napster, it doesn't connect to any server at
all, and when I try to "Choose own server" instead of Autoget best server, I still
can't put in my own ip address. I've tried almost everything I can think of (Hmm,
besides RTFMing! hehe) and it always returns the "Warning -- Connection refused", and
I'm actually trying to set up a new user. Very strange. I'll have to go grab the
docs.
Anyone find a solution to this?

After building the modules did you do a "make install_modules". I'm
thinking you are trying to use old modules with the new kernel.
Modules built with the same kernel source should work with that kernel.
Of course this assumes the kernel built without errors.

You've got multiple, not-unexpected problems here. The format/keywords
in the config file between XFree 3.3* and XFree 4.x have changed
slightly. The info above tells you what XF86Config file is being read
(i.e., it is the one you were using with XFree 3.*). The keywords that
were fine w/that version of XFree are *not* fine with this version.
I had this problem as well, so don't feel singled out :)
Backup that file and generate a new one using XFree86 --configure (and
hope that works). If it doesn't, you're in for a bit of a ride.
It would likely also be a good idea for you to have a look at some of
the README and INSTALL files in the distribution, it will clue you in to
a few of these problems, and their recommended solution. The docs are
also at www.xfree.org, if you can't find them in your distribution.

For the _third_ time:
DO YOU HAVE THE "sg" MODULE LOADED?
The "sg" module is the SCSI driver that cdrecord is trying to
use. It either needs to be compiled into the kernel or loaded
with the "modprobe sg" command.
You do not need the "sg" module to mount or boot from SCSI.
You do need the "sg" module to burn a CD.

The "sg" module comes pre-compiled with all of the recent
RH installs I've done.
What happens when you do "modprobe sg" as root?

How far did you came with the SuSE boot disk?
In case you just did not get the right idea:
- find out what kind of SCSI controller you have, if you can.
- enter the menu "load kernel modules" --> "load scsi driver" or so.
- select the right module and watch what happens when it loads.
(if you cannot find out what scsi driver you have, try loading all
of them one by one until one of them loads successfully AND FINDS
YOUR HARDWARE ! Perhaps you need the 'modules'-floppy, too.)
If that works, go back and continue with "Installation from CD", the
system now tries to mount the CD, if that fails, well come back here :-)
