FYI: I just installed TaxCut atop WINE; I have not run through it in
_dramatic_ detail, and certainly haven't printed yet, which has
traditionally been the thorny part, but it seems to be functioning
well as far as entering values, jumping from form to form, accessing
documentation, and calculating results.

Just an addition, I found the following lines of text in

http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/Adv-Ba
sh-Scr-HOWTO.html

--cut--
Note: A script can export variables only to child processes, that is, only
to commands or processes which that particular script initiates. A script
invoked from the command line cannot export variables back to the command
line environment. Child processes cannot export variables back to the parent
processes that spawned them.
--cut--

If the above is correct, then it should not be possible to export
environment vars back to the parent process.

BUT: On my friends Linux PC, this works perfectly, so it is indeed possible.
But how....

Subject: FTP using DNS instead of me???
Date: Sat, 13 Jan 2001 11:33:50 -0800

PROBLEM:

I go into ftp and try to connect to one of my Linux box's (Redhat 6.0,
wu-ftpd) and sit there forever! It says "connected" but never comes back
with the "Name:" prompt to get me to log in. I enable "logging" in ipchains
for all packets, (on the client Linux box) and it indicates that the target
ftp box (the one I am trying to connect to) is sending out DNS requests to
my ISP's nameservers. I am not connected to the internet when I do all of
this.

MY CONFIGURATION:

I have 3 machines in a LAN as follows:

Machine "A" is an NT Server and is a DNS and DHCP server. It has no internet
connection except via Machine "B".
Machine "B" is a Redhat 6.0 Linux box with wu-ftp and a ppp connection to
the internet on a 56k modem.
Machine "C" is a Redhat 6.0 Linux box with wu-ftp and no connection to the
internet, except via Machine "B".

I am going into ftp from Machine "B" and trying to connect to Machine "C". I
am monitoring the DNS requests that originate from Machine "C" via the
ipchains script running on Machine "B" (where I tried to open the ftp
connection from).

HERE'S WHAT BAFFLES ME:

Why does ftp need DNS? If the IP address of Machine "B" is 172.17.10.116
and the IP address of Machine "C" is 172.17.1.2 then why can't I just open
up an ftp connection to Machine "C"? Why should Machine "C" care about
names? Or do incoming ftp connections always work that way? (ie: with names
rather than IP addresses?). Can't FTP say to itself "huh ... no name help
here! Shucks - I guess I'll just use the address instead, since I know the
address but not the name resolution".

HERE'S HOW I GET IT WORKING:

I connect to the internet and everything starts happily working! DNS
requests from Machine "C" are now satisfied and so it prompts for a username
and password. Everybody is happy (but why?).

FURTHER BAFFLING STUFF:

When the internet connection is down I can always open an FTP session from
Machine "C" over to Machine "B". The res-ponse is instantaneous! But when
the internet connection is down I cannot open up Machine "B" from Machine
"A". Why is Machine "B" so picky about letting ftp users in when the
internet is down, but Machine "A" doesn't care???

IF YOU CAN UN-BAFFLE ME:

If you can give me a clear picture of what is happening you will earn a free
big mac. To claim it, go to your nearsest McDonalds and tell them that you
fixed my problem.

Seriously, thanks in advance for any help.
I am not an expert on either DNS or FTP. Just trying to get these suckers to
work!

I think you're confusing Salon with Slate, which is indeed owned by

That would be because gs is sending output to standard out, which is
your screen. Said output is probably some binary bitmap format.

>Can anyone point me in the right direction for printing to stdout?

You're doing it right, but probably for the wrong reason. What are you
trying to do? If you want to view ps on a text screen, then you need
something like ps2ascii.

>If we're not meant to print to the screen with ghostscript outside of

Because you may want to use gs in a pipeline.

hello!

my inputrc was working fine until just a few days ago.
its a newly installed system, so i've made quite a few
changes, dunno which caused it.

most pertinent is perhaps that i upgraded X from 4.0.0
to 4.0.2, i let it overwrite all configfiles and such.

the system is slack7.1, with the new 2.4.0 kernel.

it's only the Meta (Alt) key that stopped working, the
other options (like 'set meta-flag on' etc) still work
just fine.
what could've caused it? something about X overwriting
termcap (whatever that is)?

   tia / alex k

here's how the .inputrc looks:------------

set show-all-if-ambiguous on
set expand-tilde on

set meta-flag on
set convert-meta off
set input-meta on
set output-meta on

You have to call the script with "source <scriptname>".

For security reasons, child processes can't mess with the environment
variables of their parent. Shell scripts are executed as child processes of
your command line interpreter (bash, probably). Thus, they cant change the
variables of it.

Well, there should be... I'm curious about the syntax you're using,
though. I generally mount an ISO image like so:
  mount -t iso9660 file.iso /mnt/somewhere -o loop
and I have successfully burned a small .iso to a CD-RW, then mounted
that image via the command above. Is the "loop" module loaded? If this
ISO is very large (> 2G) then there could be problems from that. HTH,

in Dcoumentation/Changes (2.4.0)?

Good luck

See if you still have problems when you disable Java and JavaScript. I
disabled those recently when my ISP's home page was causing Netscape to
crash. I forgot to re-enable them, but with them disabled (not sure if
that makes a difference), I had no trouble searching for a book on Amazon,
although, I did not attempt a purchase. It is also possible that some
secure sites require a browser upgrade to 128-bit encrytation.

This is a "Ha ha, only serious" statement--see the Jargon File for
details ( http://tuxedo.org/~esr/jargon/ ) on what that means.

Many x86 motherboards reserve a small portion of the system RAM for
various things. If you have a board with the video card embedded, that
embedded video often "shares" (that is, STEALS) a certain amount of
system RAM instead of providing its own VRAM. If either of these
conditions hold, then when you tell the kernel to use the full amount of
memory available, it will--and will most likely scribble all over the
reserved portions of the system RAM, generally causing havoc. Hence the
practice of telling the system you have less RAM than you actually do.

Peoples' memories are not perfect, hence the "human beings have faulty
RAM". Computer memories sometimes have bad bits ("memtest86" at
freshmeat.net) and since humans own computers....

Subject: Mandrake PATH setting
Date: 13 Jan 2001 17:06:24 -0400

Hi,

I choose high security level when installing mandrake and found that
my PATH setting in /etc/profile no longer work any more (at least
for the root). Instead, the comment hints that the Mandrake security
management is taking care of it.

How should set my PATH under Mandrake security management then. I
looked for the man pages but didn't get enough info to get it
going...

Thanks
