No. The notes for RH6.2 states that USB is not supported.
RH7.0 may has some USB support.
Wait until Kernel 2.4 is released for full USB support.
You could try for a minimal RH6.1 install on your thinkpad harddrive,
and download the development kernel 2.3.99 or kernel 2.4-test and try to
install Linux on the USB harddrive if you can see it.

Hello,

Can anybody please give me some php or cgi script which can upload files
to server.
It's good, if that script supports many users and very good if it
supports SSL

When you added a new partition, things got rearranged on disk. For
example, if before you had:
/dev/hda1 FAT32 C:
/dev/hda2 <extended>
/dev/hda5 ext2 /
/dev/hda6 swap swap

and you added a partition, it's quite possible that you now have:
/dev/hda1 FAT32 C:
/dev/hda2 <extended>
/dev/hda5 FAT32 D:
/dev/hda6 ext2 /
/dev/hda7 swap swap

Notice how / has moved from hda5 to hda6. This confuses the heck out of
the kernel. It's fairly easy to fix; at the LILO: prompt, boot with
"linux root=/dev/hdaX" where X is the location of your / partition. You
can edit /etc/lilo.conf and re-run lilo to make this change permanent,
most likely.

If this doesn't help, post the output of "fdisk -l /dev/hda" and all the
exact error messages you get, not just the last (misspelled) one.
Things like this are why experienced users keep backups of their
partition tables and the output of fdisk -l around, as well as the
extremely nifty Tom's RootBoot rescue system. http://www.toms.net/rb/

Is this Java thing actually installed in /jdk_118v1/bin/java ? Didn't
think so. Try its actual location, like "/usr/local/jdk_118v1/bin" or
"/usr/jdk_118v1/bin" or "/usr/bin/jdk_118v1/bin" or wherever it actually
got put. HTH, HAND, tell the Blackdown folks their README has a typo in
it....

Yes. But I have never booted to level five and seeing the number of
problems that can happen I think it is a _bad_ thing.

Hi... I am trying to get a 2.4.0 test5 version of the kernel to run.
I have compiled it etc. When I get to the lilo prompt and try to
select linux-240, it says something like "starting kernel" and then
hangs. I have verified that the kernel is where the lilo.conf
says it is. Any ideas?

I've compiled probably a dozen kernels; some even worked when I finished
- and never choked on the bzImage make. All were from kernel org
tarballs with various and sundry patches applied. I'd look elsewhere
for your problem.

Stay away from 2.4.test-pre-alpha-whatever until 2.4.10 is available.
Unless you like kernel hangs at boot.

I'm too new to Linux to choose "the best" distribution for my needs, so
I've installed the following on a spare system with P55C 233 CPU and 96
Mb RAM:

common data /dev/sdc6 0.5 Gb
swap /dev/sdc7 125 Mb
RedHat 6.1 /dev/sdc8 1.1 Gb
Corel Linux 1.1 /dev/sdc9 1.1 Gb
Mandrake 7.1 /dev/sdc10 1.1 Gb

FWIW, I also have the 1.2 CLOS CD and the 6.2 RedHat CD and anticipate
moving to a larger HD to provide more space so that all packages I might
ever need can be installed up front instead of trying to save space by
leaving some out before knowing how to choose what's unnecessary, and
replacing the above with the newer versions. On the bigger disk I should
think an extra partition for shared packages would also make good sense.

The point of the exercise is to gain some familiarity with the different
distros and their default VWMs in order to choose one to possibly use to
eventually take over my daily chores currently performed by OS/2. Most
of what I do is either web related and run in native OS/2 apps, or not,
and handled by DOS apps.

Netscape is the one app I'm already familiar with which is available in
native versions for windoze and OS/2 and Linux, so that is where I'd
like to begin my investigation into some of the workings of Linux that
differ from what I'm used to. Right now I have three separate Netscapes
for Linux: RH 6.1 has 4.08, CLOS has 4.7, and ML has 4.73. I've
downloaded the i386 gz of 4.75, so I'd like to upgrade the other three
by removing them and installing 4.75 only once, and the main question I
believe is more of a philosophical one than a practical one: Where
should I install it?, followed by: How?

I've yet to find a suitable HOWTO or FAQ that addresses making such
choices, nor one that explains the significance and practical aspects of
shared libraries. Suggestions and/or doc pointers would be much
appreciated.

Part 2: I think DOSEMU would be a good next step following the Netscape
exercise. Attempting to execute dos in RH 6.1 gives me error messages,
in ML 7.1 "bad command or file name", and CLOS 1.1 a DOS prompt
indicating version 3.31 compatibility, and I need at least v5.0
compatibility for my apps. So logically, I should remove whatever DOSEMU
is currently installed and install a shared newer version, assuming one
exists. Suggestions and/or doc pointers would also be much appreciated
on this subject.

Yes. Win does not really support case sensitive file names. Therefore
file names are upper case.

Make sure to burn with rock ridge extensions. There extended filenames
and *IX permissions are mapped to ISO9660 file names.

Interesting. Any idea why RedHat is listing it as "distributable" rather
than "GPL"?

Also, I have another question if it's not a bother. Excuse my ignorance,
but what is an "assembler and linker"--(I'm not a programmer, though I have
dabbled a bit with BASIC and VBA.)
