One thing you must do if you want to limit the problems is to remove support
for IDE cdrom in the kernel. Under SuSE 7.0 for instance the cdrom isn't recognized
as a SCSI drive until I do a cdrecord -scanbus with the IDE cdrom support compiled.
The only way I have found to fix the bug is to completely remove any support for IDE
cdrom. If you have more than one cdrom or cdrw you will have more scsi drives.
in /etc/modules.conf I have
alias scd0 sr_mod
options ide-cd ignore=hdc
alias scsi_hostadapter ide-scsi
in /etc/lilo.conf I have
append="hdc=ide-scsi"
when you change lilo.conf don't forget to run lilo
if you have 2 cdroms for instance this would be
append="hdc=ide-scsi hdd=ide-scsi"
Assuming those would be there of course.
Note that I have never been able to get my cdrw to work correctly with
a hard disk on the same channel. I ended up buying an ultradma64 card
to fix the problem. It may be just on my system but the problem was
cleared by removing the hard disk.
in /etc/fstab I have
/dev/scd0 /cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0

Because of the search and destroy mission of certain winblows installs it may

You probably need the "st" (SCSI Tape Drive) module loaded. Try "modprobe st"
and see if it logs messages about detecting the tape. If so, you should
be able to use the /dev/nst0 and /dev/st0 device files.
(Sorry, I don't know what you do on Red Hat to get it to load the module on
bootup.)

Subject: annoying rpm build errors...that are FALSE
Date: Tue, 26 Sep 2000 19:36:52 -0600
I periodically run into the MOST ANNOYING error when trying
to build certain src rpms. I am running Mandrake 7.1 and
am trying, at this moment, to build the tcltk-8.3.2 src
rpm. It gets pretty far along and then craps with this
message:
th-tclinclude=../tcl8.3.2/generic --with-tkinclude=../tk8.3.2/generic
configuring Expect 5.31.7
checking for autoconf... yes
checking configure up to date... yes
checking host system type... i686-mandrake-linux-gnu
checking target system type... i686-mandrake-linux-gnu
checking build system type... i686-mandrake-linux-gnu
configure: error: can only configure for one host and one target at a
time
Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.70120 (%build)
GAH! There is only ONE host and ONE target listed and they
are IDENTICAL. There is no problem here yet rpm appears to
have one. What does one need to do to get past this
bullcrap? This is nixing my ability to build and upgrade
several src rpms because they each end this way...but it
is only SOME src.rpms. MOST of them build just fine.
Can anyone enlighten me as to what the problem and
solution is to this?
Please?

A drive crash is not real likely, given that the first indication of trouble
occurred before the machine was moved (if I understand the situation
correctly), and the fact that almost all drives today will auto park their
heads anyway, independent of what the OS does, once the power is turned off.
Not to say it isn't possible.

Actually, Redhat does have such a message. Their server is just so
overloaded that most of the time you'll get a 10061 error. Don't ask me
what that means but I assume it's something along the lines of no ports

I could say that I am not biased either way, having used GNOME and tossed it,
switched to KDE and then back to GNOME.
A while back KDE sucked big time, I remember numerous crashes on my 486 PC.
I just stuck with the naked desktop that came with slackware because it was more
stable.
I later got a faster machine and installed gnome. The damm thing would crash for no
logical reason so I dumped it and went with KDE for a while. Crashes of the mouse
were common when switching between desktop and GUI and touching the mouse before the
screen had finished drawing. I then tried GNOME again and felt like searching for
a shotgun to get the stupid thing out of it's misery. I later saw a comment about
enligthment that got me to think that perhaps the problem was not GNOME exactly.
I later tried to switch my KDE to use GNOME instead but it crashed and I gave up
and went back to KDE.
This past weekend I installed SuSE 7.0 professional and installed KDE, KDE 2.0 and
GNOME. I decided to check KDE 2.0 to realize that it wasn't ready for prime time
by a long shot. I tested GNOME and hourra, it works beautifully and I removed KDE.
At last it is stable and fast, much faster than KDE has ever been. This time I made
a point of not installing enlightment at all.

Is that with mandrake? You should be able to disable that bug by running
the configuration program from the console. I don't remember the name of
the program to call, check the book that came with your distribution.

Your question is illogical. You claim to have a winmodem and later say that it is
an HSP modem. Linux still doesn't support software modems like the so called winmodem
or HSP modem. There is only one software modem supported so far and it ain't what
you got.

1. Backup your harddisk. You should not need a backup, but if you don't do
it, you probably _will_ need it.
2. This varies a bit from distribution to distribution, but the install
process should give you the option to create one or more new partitions
(without affecting existing partitions), and to indicate which partition(s)
Linux should automatically mount.
3. As part of the install process, you will also be asked where to place
Lilo, the Linux Loader. Make sure you indicate "Linux partition" (whatever
your distribution calls it), and _not_ MBR (Master Boot Record).
4. Make sure that you create a boot diskette, which should also be an
intallation option.
Good luck

Haven't tried this one personally, but check freshmeat and I'm sure it
shoud be there. It's called 'twin' for 't'ext 'win'dow manager. It is
supposedly kinda like X but using a curses-based screen. Otherwise,
almost every linux distro comes w/ twm (It installs by default w/
XFree86, I think), which is about as bare bones as it gets. Next, I'd
look at something like fvwm, which again comes w/ most default installs,
whether you want it or not ;) It is old, at least relative to kde and
gnome, but it does work a lot better on minimal hardware. I had finally
evangelized linux enough that our local IS person, and our meter tech
(her backup admin), were letting me install Linux-Mandrake on a spare
P-90 w/ 16M ram for a beater platform, since our new SCADA system ran on
HPUX, and they didn't want people learning for the first time on a
production system and CDE. KDE absolutely crawled, and eventually
locked up the system. Gnome wasn't really any better. Talk about egg
on one's face. Yuck! Later, I tried fvwm95, and it ran like a champ.
XFCE and IceWM (lean, but mostly gnome-compliant) worked pretty well.
Oh, now that I think of it, there is another minimalist windowmanagaer
out there that might work-- wm2. Again, pretty bare bones.
Monte
P.S. before you ask me for help setting up any of these minimalist
windowmanagers, I must mention that my 'leanest' systems have a minimum
of 64MB RAM, and my desktop that I use day to day has 384MB. So 'lean'
to me (IceWM and XFCE) is probably piggy to you. For me, wm2 and fvwm,
are insanely fast, but butt-ugly and not very friendly. YMMV.

Subject: Gathering a recursive list of URLs?
Date: Wed, 27 Sep 2000 02:23:52 GMT
Hi,
I need to create a complete recursive list of URLs for an entire
website. That is, I need something that I can point to
http://www.some.com/index.html, and have it follow the links recursively
throughout the site and build a list of all the URLs. I don't actually
want copies of the pages, just a list of their URLs.
At first I thought wget's --spider option might do it, but that just
suppresses the output. For the time being, I wrote a PHP script to build
URL lists from a local copy of the site. However, I'd prefer a simpler
option if one exists.
If anyone knows of an alternate utility (or Perl/PHP script) which can
accomplish this task, I'd be most grateful!
Thanks!

First of all, there is a 4MB-Laptop-Mini-HOWTO. Sound perfect :-)

There are some mini-X distributions out there.
They are basically taking the most minimal amount of the standard
X distribution and putting it together.
It *may* be X11R5 (i.e. Xfree2.X, an older version of X11),
which *may* be enough for what you are planing.
I am not aware of a tuned X server itself.
Then there are some projects (look on freshmeat, linuxlinks, metalab
and which ever your favorite source is), that go for a
"not so bloated GUI" :
wisio, nanoX, Yax, microwindows (I think 2 of them merged).
And then there is MGR, which is kind of dated.
But I used MGR for my old 386 with a 256k VGA card.
X was just not going anywhere on that.

Yep, that's a cool thing, too :-)
Generally, all these things have some kind of terminal
program, so you can use all console based applications.
Twin's terminal emulations seems to be pretty decent.

Now, if you run X, yes, then get a lean window manager.
The smallest one I used was lwm :-) that has nothing whatsoever ...
somehow like wm2. Both I like, btw :-) but then I also like
Enlightenment - but you don't want that on your poor Laptop.

Not completely in bash, but...
dir=`echo $PATH | tr \: \<space>`; for i in $dir; do echo $i; done
Use an actual ' ' as the second argument to tr, btw. Those are
backquotes, not single quotes.
