You don't. If the printer daemon requires one, then it ought to
create one itself. Yes, this does mean lpd must be started up
by root.
See the documentation for your printing system as you may not
run the plain BSD lpd.

Has the machine you are using ever had Linux on it before? From reading the
newsgroups I gather that Linux requires more of the hardware than windows.
Whereas windows would tolerate flakey memory or processor etc. (until it
died for no discernable reason), Linux requires the hardware to be working
from the get-go.

I've recently installed RH6.0 for the first time, and I'm having a problem.
After a period of time, greater than 2 hours, and less than 12 hours, the
monitor will no longer come back on with keyboard or mouse activity. I am
logged on with my user level account into Gnome (don't know version #, whatever
is default with RH6.0) when this happens. The only way I've found to get my
system back is to reboot.
It is set up as my IP Masq machine. I can get to the internet on my Win box and
the apache service is still running when this occurs, so I know the machine
itself is running ok.
Here's the specs on it: AMD K6/2-300, 128megs ram, 16Meg Creative Labs RivaTnT,
hooked to a Nokia 447xPro monitor, resoultion is set to 1600X1200, 32bit, 75 mhz
refresh, two 3com NICs, a Sound Blaster 16-SCSI2, and a partridge in a pear
tree. Kernel version is 2.2.17, not sure of which options to include here.
Anyone know how to stop thise from occuring?

I'm pretty sure that you don't. The point is to limit the resources
consumed by users.

Hi there Jeff,
Yes this machine has had many linux installs on it, it is sort of a linux test
box for me. Perhaps repeatedly wiping the drive clean contributes to these
problems.
FWIW the second install was succesful, in text mode. I still have not gotten X
running.

this will list the libs you're missing....
Then reinstall the packages that contain those libs
And they're called directories in linux, not folders.

HELP!!!!!!
Ahem.... OK, I guess you'd like something a little more specific, huh? :)
I'm running Mandrake 7.1 with a stock 2.2.17 kernel (slightly patched for
IDE and Win4Lin), a TNT2 AGP video card, and XFree 4.0.1
I downloaded the newst i2c and bttv code and patched my kernel with no
problems, and I compiled everything as modules as the README suggested.
Everything seems good so far. Then I ran MAKEDEV in the bttv source
tree, and it created the /dev entries without problem. I then add the
following entries to /etc/conf.modules per the bttv instructions:
# i2c
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options i2c-core i2c_debug=1
options i2c-algo-bit bit_test=1
#bttv
alias char-major-81 videodev
alias char-major-81-0 bttv
options bttv card=10 radio=1
options tuner debug=1
#make alsa + msp3400 play nicely
options snd-card-ens snd_index=0
options msp3400 mixer=1
But then I discover kwintv won't compile, giving me errors about not
finding iostream.h fstream.h and strstream.h. Whatever. So I grabbed the
0.7.99 RPM from the cooker site and installed it as an RPM. No problems
or dependency issues. But when it starts, it gives me "error loading
shared libraries: kwintv: undefined symbol: DPMSQueryExtension"
So I decide to try xawtv instead. It compiles and starts without a
problem, but the picture is AWFUL - black & white, grainy, severe
ghosting, and rolling - and there is no sound.
Does ANYBODY have this beast working under Mandrake?
I repeat: HELP!!!!! :)

Dammit, i'm having to retype this letter (damn mail server) so please
forgive me if i forgot anything
I'm running a celeron 533, 128 ram, and using an ATI all in wonder 128 (RAGE
128)
Slackware linux version (the newest one whatever it is, 7.something i think)
and the X that came with that (i beleive it was the newest 3.x before the
4.whatever).
i selected my video card from the list in xf86config, and i chose the
X_SVGA (maybe spelt that way) server that that selection suggested.
i finally got X working, but when i start it, the fonts are missed. if i
start it with xinit (it starts with only 1 term window open) the fonts are
messed in that. My keyboard setup i correct because i can run my programs,
even thought i can't see what i'm typing or doing.
If i run startx (loading GNOME), ALL the fonts are messed up. every one of
them. and its not even a consistent messed up. it's as if something is
corrupted, because it looks like my computer is trying to play barcode
warrior. All the fonts show barcode lookalikes. IF i type the same thing
twice, it'll look different. if i click a dropdown menu, its messed, if i
click it again, its messed a different way. The only thing which mnesses up
is the font. the display otherwise is great. graphics, windows, etcetcetc.
Thanks in advance,

Hi all. I finally got my xserver to load. I'm on a Celeron 533mhz, 128 ram,
etcetc..
i'm using Slackware v 7.something (the new one :) i just downloaded it ) and
also the new 3.x version of X.(not 4)
my video card is an ATI all in wonder 128, (Rage 128 chipset) and in
xf86config i chose that card from the list, and as suggested i used the
X_SVGA(not sure on exact name) server. set all that up, dum de dum..
if i use xinit, it opens with a terminal window for me, but its garbled. its
weird, its like barcodes. i try typing and it shows crap. The keyboard
settings are right though because i can run programs like xroach, etcetc,
just can't read it. The messed font is NOT consistent. the same text will
display different every time.
if i start using startx (using Gnome), and i play around, al the fonts are
messed. occasionally you'll see the correct letters, but usually not. If i
click a drop down menu, its messed. i click it again, the same menu shows
different messed text. I've been trying different things, etc, etc.
One thing i've tried, but with no success, is disabling the video frame
buffer (EXPERIMENTAL) from my kernel. no changes.
Thanks!

60MB/s represents a _whopping lot of bandwidth_.
60MB/s represents around 50 times as much bandwidth as you could
_theoretically_ get out of Ethernet (10BaseT), about five times as
much as you could possibly get out of 100BaseT, and realistically
would come close to saturating a Gigabit Ethernet segment.
I don't want to think of the cost of paying for that kind of
connection; likely hundreds of thousands of dollars per month.

Seeing as how POP3 is a protocol for _pulling_ mail from a POP server,
whilst the task at hand involves Mail Transfer, it might be more
sensible to look to the Propero Tool for the Job, namely a Mail
Transfer Agent.
The best-known such MTA is Sendmail; alternatives tend to provide an
equivalent interface via the program /usr/lib/sendmail
The way _I'd_ do this would be to open a pipe to /usr/lib/sendmail,
and then submit the message.
Something like the following Perl-like fragment:
open(SM, "|/usr/lib/sendmail);
print SM "From: [EMAIL PROTECTED]\nTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]\n";
for $i in @DATA { # Array @DATA contains lines
# of the message, _not terminated_
print SM $i, "\n";
}
close SM;
This solution assumes that your Mail Transfer Agent is configured to
be able to submit mail to the outside world, which is a Good Idea To
Have Done Anyways.
