Subject: lm_sensors - a little help?
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hello All!
First, a bit of background;
When I first got this ASUS P5A-B motherboard and discovered that it had sensor
support (MB + CPU temp, fan speed) I was ecstatic! I immediately researched the
WindowMaker dock apps that supported this feature, but found that I needed
lm_sensors and decided that that seemed like too much work.
Well, something happened to change my vanity desire into a need. My CPU fan is
dying on me. I've installed a chasis fan (that unfortunately is too old to
support the sensor connection) which blows across the CPU, but I'd still like
to monitor the CPU fan speed and CPU temperature to be able to watch for a
signifigant increase in temperature that would call for my scrounging together
the money for a new CPU fan (not a likely prospect at this point in time,
unfortunately :< ).
Anyways; I've got lm_sensors 2.5.2 installed, and have run (as root) the
provided detection application which told me the information I needed to add to
my config files. That information goes as follows;
/etc/modules.conf;
alias char-major-89 i2c-dev
options w83781d ignore=0,0x2d
/sbin/init.d/boot.local;
# I2C adapter drivers
modprobe i2c-ali15x3
modprobe i2c-isa
# I2C chip drivers
modprobe w83781d
modprobe eeprom

That's all well and good, and most of it looks correct, except for the fan
speeds, and the fact that I have NO idea what in my box could POSSIBLY be +208
degrees celcius! (That's a tad above the point where sillicon starts to melt,
n'est pas?)
I'm currently running linux-2.4.0-test7 with the lm_sensors support all
compiled as modules, and with the kernel's i2c support compiled also as a
module. My lsmod returns;

Now that you've got all the background information, here's what I'm looking
for. I know that I've probably got some tweaking to do in lm_sensors itself,
but I'll also be looking for a suitable dock app in the very near future.
I'm looking for a dock app, or even just an application in general for now,
that will display three things for me; My CPU and MB temperature, accurate to
the tenth of a degree celcius (which my BIOS does support, as does, apparently,
lm_sensors) and the RPM rate of my CPU fan. I'd also like support for the RPM
of my chasis fan, just on the off chance I should upgrade it in the near
future.
Currently, when I run the 'wmlm' application, it tells me that my CPU
temperature is +208oC - obviously inaccurate! I think my CPU temperature is the
temp2 value, and my motherboard temperature is the temp1 value(s) listed above.
I might be able to tweak the wmlm app to display these values correctly, but it
doesn't have a read-out of my fan RPM. (Since lm_sensors doesn't even appear to
see these values correctly, I think I have to look there, first).
If anybody could help me, I'd greatly appreciate it! (And if it results in my
not having to buy a new CPU, I'll possibly send you my old, dead CPU fan as a
symbolic token of my appreciation. <G> ).

This is pretty old news. Note the date on the web page: October 4, 1999.
It was discussed extensively a year ago, and quite a few rebuttal pages
cropped up inside of a day or two. I'm sure you could find a bunch of
them still active if you did a web search.
Note: I've redirected followups to the comp.os.linux.advocacy newsgroup,
where this belongs. Don't expect replies from me there, though, since I
don't read it.

My god what a mess you made of this posting! I can hardly read it!
Could you please list the result of `ls -l /dev/fd0`
It should list
brw-rw-rw- 1 user floppy 2, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/fd0
^^^ ^^^
major minor
Check for the right major/minor numbers, if these are wrong, run MAKEDEV
fd0
as root (and are in /dev)
And post the EXACT error message you get. (/mnt/floppy doesn't even have
a major and minor number!)
Eric
I did that command and I got this:
brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 2, 0 May 5 1998 /dev/fd0
I typed MAKEDEV in /dev I get a command not found.

Althought that might give you a root password, it will not tell you wht
happened.
Check the file /etc/shadow.
check the /etc/passwd file.
Check the /etc/pam.d/login file
This behaviour sounds very suspicious and I am haveing a very hard time
imagining how suddenly all users could be allowed to log in without a
password. Another possibility is that someone hacked your system and
replaced login with something which (stupidly) allowed all login.

That's right.
I think Linux is very good alternative for WIndows NT not for WIndows 98 etc.
I like in Linux that to start server with all network services I do not need
run User Graphical Interface. I do not need to have GUI on all the time like
it is with NT. I really hate it.
Most things in Linux you do using shell and to have Server with all Services
like http, ftp, nntp, smtp, pop, imap etc you do not need GUI.
About Linux GUI:
For example about Gnome , I like it before but not now when it starts to be
more similar to Windows and specially favorites instead the bookmarks. Thus
now, you have to say "bookmark you favorites". So on.......
But at all I very rare use GUI, I hate it.

Subject: Problem with X windows after kernel rebuild
Date: Sat, 07 Oct 2000 22:03:48 GMT
Hope someone here might be able to help with this one.
We rebuilt the kernel on a machine in order to apply a patch, and the
new kernel had a problem. No problem - just reboot the old kernel
right? WRONG!
When we rebooted with the old kernel, the system would not let X come
up. We could telnet and ftp in, but could not log in remotely, even
in a text terminal. If we booted to level 3, it would come up and we
could log in locally.
Any ideas???
We are running RH 6.2 on a P2-400Mhz with 128MB RAM and a C&T 69000
video on an industrial computer CPU board.

I don't understand this. If it's truly "for Linux", why is it running

(Side note: you might get even better performance by using XImage,
if you are doing an e.g. pixel-by-pixel rendering of something.
It's very fast locally -- albeit a bit slow over the network. :-)
See /usr/include/X11/Xutil.h and 'man XCreateImage'.)

By the same token, if requiring a library called libwine somehow implies
that it's not "truly for Linux," then utilizing any of the following
components would similar indicate that software was not made "truly
for Linux":
- XFree86 [used on diverse OSes including OS/2 and various BSDs]
- GLIBC [also used on Hurd and usable on other OSes]
- GTK [usable on *BSD, Win32, possibly even MacOS]
- GNOME [usable on a wide variety of Unix-like systems]
- KDE [also usable on a variety of Unix-like systems]
- GNU File and Binary Utilities [used on many Unix-like systems]
- Tcl-related libraries [Unix, Win32, MacOS]
- Perl, Python [Unix, Win32, MacOS, BeOS]
All the Gnome programs run "under libgnome and libgtk and a cast of
dozens"; all sorts of GUIed applications run "atop XFree86, under
libXt and other such libraries;" those may be assessed blame for an
application "not being truly for Linux."
Presumably "being truly for Linux" means that an application uses
some NON-portable layer that forcibly ties it to Linux. VMWare for
Linux is probably thus tied to Linux...

Why is "abbreviation" such a long word?
