Morality to be distinguished from ethics where "morality"
is nothing more than a weak ethical theory held as a matter

Also while the herd mentality is certainly there, I think the
nature of software interfaces and how they tend to interfere

Subject: at queue problems
Date: Tue, 30 Jan 2001 00:04:02 GMT

I have two users users set up on my Mandrake Linux 7.0
computer that are both trying to use the at queue to run
programs. They both have a shell script that calls the at
command. The line where at is called is:

at -q b -f diprun $2 $3 $4

This works fine for one of the users, but for the other, when
the appropriate time comes, diprun does not execute. It just
stays in the queue indefinitely without ever executing.

If anyone knows why this is happening and how to fix it, I'd
greatly appreciate your help.

Unfortunately I'm trying to read from a SCSI tape drive. From
the ftape web page:

ftape supports neither QIC-02, IDE (ATAPI), nor SCSI tape
drives. SCSI drives are accessed as /dev/[n]st[0-7] and are
supported by the kernel through the SCSI drivers. ATAPI tape
drives are supported by the kernel since 1.3.46 through the
    IDE drivers.

Thanks for the pointer....

Therefore by the time you're up it's too late.

You can probably write a driver to diddle the bits in the memory which
control this, although I notice that a number of old BIOSs (like yours?)
don't honor this and boot cold every blessed time.

The partition tables seems OK, although not standard.

The "end cylinder" for link to next extended partition table (ID 05)
usually is the same as end cylinder for the following logical
partition. Example: End cylinder (not the actual entry) in the
extended partition table cylinder 1306, entry 2, should be 2901. The
"Num" field should be corrected accordingly.

The logical partition belonging to an extended partition table usually
begins at a head 1, sector 1, meaning that there are (sectors-1)
unused sectors between the partition table and the partition. In your
tables two partitions begin in the sector following the extended
partition table.

The "NB" may be the result of the actual partition space being a
little smaller than according to the partition tables. This is as it
should be, since "end sector" should be 63.

A "*" at the cylinder number indicates that the actual entry is 1023,
the largest cylinder number that fits in the tables.

A "#" indicates that the actual CHS entry is 1023/(heads-1)/sector.

In extended partition tables I prefer CHS entries as (cylinder mod
1024)/head/sector.

In the primary partition table I prefer 1023/(heads-1)/sector for
cylinders > 1023.

rpm -e uninstalls a package
man rpm or try rpm --help

see if there's an update to the version of kpackage you have; mine works well

Hi,

this is dumb, i know but here goes. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I have two hard drives hda and hdb both identical Quantum 20gb drives.

hda is fat 32 with two partiions 8 and 12 gb. Windows ME and Windows 2000
installed. The OS's were installed first.
hdb is partitioned as / = 2gb /usr and /home
hdb1, hdb5, hdb6 and hdb7 (swap)

heres the problem.

The linux drive was set as hda on its original machine and has now been
moved to its new home. The system is fine but as it is now hdb instead of
hda it won't boot as it is trying to mount the partitions as hda1, hda5 and
hda6 (and hda7 - swap)

Question:

I can get into single user mode to modify it but where? Where do i make the
changes to tell it it is now hdb?????
or am i hosed??

TIA to all

MuPAD is an excellent choice.
It does both numerical and symbolic analysis and
the plot command pulls up gnuplot automatically.
gnuplot has modification and zooming capability.
With MuPAD you can plot several functions on
the same gnuplot graph.
The app is not GPL but it is free for personal use.

Scientific theories, according to Sir Karl Popper, can be "falsified,"
or proven wrong, by experiment.
Unscientific theories -Marxist dialectical history and Freudian
psychology were Popper's favorites-
are formed in such a way that they cannot be falsified by data.

Why? This is really a stupid thing to do in most cases, because it
leads to really really long kernel command lines, and if you want to
take a device down or make changes to some things or if you get the
module parameters wrong, you have to reboot.

When you compile sound support for an ISA card like the cs4232 directly
into the kernel, you enter the IRQ/DMA/IO numbers into menuconfig's
dialogs, and there they stay. FWIW, I have had no luck getting cs4232
to work when it's directly in the kernel. If you compile Ethernet card
support directly in, the first card will be detected and configged
automatically--if you have more cards, you must pass an ether= command
line.

Kernels without module support are really not reccommended. If you're
having a hardware problem you think you can solve this way, maybe you
should report its symptoms.

My school has a main server (running Digital Unix) and a couple of X
labs. These labs have X terminals that allow you to do a graphical
login. When you do that login, the system (or shell, I guess) knows
that you're coming in through a graphical session, so it automatically
sets your DISPLAY variable, etc. Also, you can just login, without
really having a text-based login shell. I know they use something
called "CDE" or something like that, but I don't know if it has anything
to do with it.

Can someone give me an overview of what all is going on here to do this
graphical login? Can I do it from my linux box?

Thanks!

You need to edit the file '/etc/fstab'. This is a plain text file.

Just do a global replace of /dev/hda to /dev/hdb.

Then reboot again (I am assuming you have a boot floppy or are using a
rescue system), but tell it to boot single user with root=/dev/hdb1 --
check /etc/lilo.conf (MBR on /dev/hda, linux root on /dev/hdb1, entry for
