Hi,

I'd like to concat 3 files into one big files. How is this achieved with
bash?

It's not :) Use cat instead:

cat foo bar baz > porcupine

In situations like this, man -k is your friend: `man -k concat' gives
you about half a dozen suspects to follow up.

Hi all,

This is perhaps a stupid question but I am not sure what exactly OEM means.
In particular, in compatibility connection with linux, can I use it with
Win4Lin just as if I had bought it directly from M$?

As I remember, you must begin to install kdesupport, the kdelibs, and then
kdebase. After this, you can install the other packages in any oder.

If you installed kwrite and all the libraries it require, you can run it

Hello,

I need to create 3 users:
- one that can log in at any time of the day, but can use the computer for only 1 hour
- one that can log in only between 3 and 6 PM (and can use his account for 3 hours)
- and one that can log in between 3 and 6 but can use his account only for 1 hour

I have RH 6, so it would be nice if you could tell me how to do this in Gnome, but if
you don't use
Gnome then the plain Linux would be good enough too.

Hi,

I wish to store emails and contacts as separate files within
directories of my choice. That is possible, but I also want to be able
to see some of an email or contact file's details (eg Subject, Phone)
via a file manager tool.

Is there a file manager tool that can not only allow me to list and
manage my files but also lists some of an email or contact file's
specific details ?

As an alternative, is there an email/pim program that allows the
storing/saving of an email or contact as an individual file in a
directory of my choice and AUTOMATICALY chooses a file name that
includes some of the email/contact details.

Any suggestions ?

BTW, I'm new to Linux so please forgive me if I should already know of
several solutions.

Regards,
Declan.

OEM refers to "Original Equipment Manufacturer", and the OEM version of
Windows is the version you will often get wth a brand new PC that has
Windows pre-installed, or sometimes if you buy a new hard drive or
motherboard. . You can usually install it just as you would any
other version of Windows, except for the following scenarios:

1. You can't install the OEM version if your PC already has a prevous OS
(Windows95 ?) installed. It is meant for bare newly formatted hard drives.

2. It is only permitted to be installed on the computer (or harddisk) it came
bundled
with. So, if you sold your original PC, you could not install the OEM
version on another new machine. This is part of the license agreement for
OEM Windows.

Now, I would presume that, YES, you can use your OEM version of Windows
with your Linux system, as long as the other requirements have not been
breached. In other words, as long as the OEM CD you are using came with
that computer.

HI,
When trying to save a news message with Knode I get " can not save remote

I press cancel then try again the file will save, though I have to type in

Gnome and kde are dekstop environments. The others are window managers. A
window manager puts nice borders around windows and lets you move them
around. It often also provides a nice menu. Desktop environments give a
consistant look to your desktop and include applications, file managers,
etc. KDE must use its own window manager. Gnome can use any, but some are
better then others (becuase the window manager can talk to Gnome if it
knows how).

Pretty much.

NO! Don't use --nodeps! I would do "rpm -Uvh *rpm", and then use
http://www.rpmfind.net/ to find any dependances, put them in the same
directory, and run it again until it works.

--nodeps basically waits for the RPM to say "I won't work without this"
and then gos "So what, I want you to install anyway".

The easiest way is by editing you ~/.xinitrc file, but as it sounds like
you use a graphical login, I don't know. Try reading the documentation
for your log in manager. man xdm/gdm/kdm

And although it was created with fdisk, there is no mention about how hda7
was formatted, which has to be done before it can be mounted.

You don't have to and probably cannot if they are PCI devices. My laptop
has pcmcia cardbus nic, Yamaha sound (which uses AC97 codec) and USB all
on the same irq, and all work fine. But I did have to disable PnP BIOS in
CMOS setup for sound to work properly (otherwise it would stutter or
repeat). Disabling PnP in CMOS did NOT seem to affect Win98se any.

Iomega uses partition 4 for FAT Zip disks (e.g., /dev/sda4, /dev/hdc4,
etc.). This is true for HFS Zip disks as well, but the Linux HFS driver
is smart enough to handle this case, so you can just specify the overall
SCSI or Zip device file (/dev/sda, /dev/hdc, etc.) without a partition
number. *IF* the kernel has support for Mac-style partition tables, you
can include the partition number if you want, but that's *NOT* required,
and it won't work if you don't have Mac partition table support.

Linux Mandrake 8.0 installed perfectly on the P166/64Meg memory machine but
won't install on the P700/384Meg ram machine. On the P700, it said "Error:
swapon(hda?), invalid argument". What does a "swapon" error mean in
general ?

Here are the configurations of the machines.

A. P166 : 64 meg ram, two separate physical hard disks, one disk
dedicated to win 95, the second disk dedicated to Linux in one big
partition and a swap partition, lilo on master boot record for dual
booting. Works fine.

B. P700 : 384 meg ram, two separate physical hard disks, one disk
dedicated to win 2000, the second disk dedicated to Linux in one big partition
and a swap partition, a small 30 meg partition is created at the beginning
of the first disk for dual booting. Mandrake refused to format and gave
swapon error.

Why won't Linux Mandrake 8 installed on the second machine ? What's a
swapon error ?

You've multi-posted this message to at least two groups. I replied in
another group. In the future, please restrict yourself to as few groups
as possible, and if you MUST post to more than one, please do it by
cross-posting (listing all the newsgroups on one "Newsgroups" line,
separated by commas) rather than multi-posting (posting separately to
each group). Multi-posting wastes bandwidth and is more likely to waste
others' time, as they make substantially similar replies that they might
not take the time to make if they'd seen others' replies. Thanks.

More on the mounting problems: if I put an ext2 formatted floppy in
the drive and try to mount it, the window I'm in hangs. Even kill -9
can't kill it. Killing the window and running ps -auxw shows the
mount command is still alive after that. When the system is halted,
it hangs when it gets to the part about unmounting the file systems.

Subject: driver for lexmark z51 printer??
Date: Mon, 28 May 2001 10:32:24 -0400

Has anyone succeeded in getting their linux system to work
with a lexmark z51 printer? Unfortunately, IBM has chosen not
to provide the driver for linux. I was wondering if a creative
hack has found a way around this.

Thanks for your help!
