The man page for fdisk does recomend the use of a DOS based fdisk for
DOS 6.2 (and I pesume Windows95 and newer), however I've had good luck
with the suggestion they make for those who really want to create the
DOS partition with Linux fdisk.
>From the man page:
The bottom line is that if you use cfdisk or fdisk to
change the size of a DOS partition table entry, then you
must also use dd to zero the first 512 bytes of that par
tition before using DOS FORMAT to format the partition.
For example, if you were using cfdisk to make a DOS parti
tion table entry for /dev/hda1, then (after exiting fdisk
or cfdisk and rebooting Linux so that the partition table
information is valid) you would use the command "dd
if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda1 bs=512 count=1" to zero the
first 512 bytes of the partition.

Multiple backups are useful when someone deletes a file, a file
gets corrupted, or some other mishap that isn't noticed for several
days. You can't exactly go to the disk dump from last night. If
keeping an archive isn't important, then two hard drives is a
relatively inexpensive solution. Too bad the original poster didn't
establish the environment that the backup solution will be used in.

Makes much more sense now....
So... Does lilo automatically generate the map file when you run
/sbin/lilo?
Cause I copied over the existing map file.... oops.
Still boots fine though.

When running the install program, it displays the following thing:
boot:
When this is seen, you can type the following thing:
boot:text expert
This means the install program starts with text and expert mode.
After that, the install program asks you about a SCSI card and
LAN card you are using. Maybe you can find AH 1542.

Subject: Cannot compile/build XFree86-4.0.1
Date: Wed, 11 Oct 2000 22:41:16 -0600
Well, the Mandrake lists are useless so here I am. I have
Mandrake 7.1 installed on my system. I have been downloading
and building binary rpms from src.rpms to better optimize and
customize my system to my hardware. I have had no problems
so far except for XFree86-4.0.1 src rpms from Mandrake AND
from Redhat.
What happens:
I can build essentially every other src rpm I have tried.
I successfully built XFree86-compat-3.3.6, for instance,
just prior to giving my first go with 4.0.1. When I get
to XFree86-4.0.1 (-23mdk.src.rpm, -24mdk.src.rpm, -1.src.rpm
from Redhat), I get no missing dependency messages or
errors during the configuration process. The src installs
and compiling begins. It continues to VERY near completion,
with messages appearing in my xterm about "rpm finding requires"
or "finding provides" messages that usually occur just prior
to the actual creation of binary rpms. This gets pretty
far along until just stopping and dumping the process back
to the commandline with NOTHING to show for it.
There are NO error messages anywhere (I have searched for
log files that would provide information too but they
apparently don't exist when doing an XFree86 build). The
CLOSEST thing I have found to an error message is in regards
to the build process not being able to find glide_drv.o.
The build just comes to an end with nothing.
As I said, there are no dependency messages. I have gone
through the list of dependencies for the binary version of
XFree86-4.0.1 and made sure that I had all the files listed
except for those provided by XFree86 itself. Nothing.
I do not have a Voodoo III card, so if the missing glide_drv.o
file is, all by itself, the cause of this, it gauls me no end.
I'm not even going to own a Voodoo III card. In any case, I
have installed the Glide-DRI rpms. I have installed the Glide_V3
rpms (devel rpm inclusive). None of it matters. I still see
the "can't find glide_drv.o" message buried in the thousands of
lines of build information that scrolls off the screen and I
still fail to end up with ANY XFree86 rpms.
I have Kernel-2.2.17 installed. I have:
glibc-devel-2.1.3-17mdk
compat-glibc-5.3-2.0.7.5mdk
glibc-profile-2.1.3-17mdk
glibc-2.1.3-17mdk
autoirpm-0.3-5mdk
rpmtools-1.1-22mdk
rpm-build-3.0.5-24mdk
rpmdrake-1.0-3mdk
rpmbuilder-0.5.1a-2mdk
gurpmi-0.5-5mdk
rpmlint-0.8-1mdk
rpm-python-3.0.5-24mdk
rpm-devel-3.0.5-24mdk
rpm-3.0.5-24mdk
urpmi-1.1-5mdk
grpmi-7.2-11mdk
Glide_V3-DRI-cvs-1mdk
Glide_V3-DRI-devel-cvs-1mdk
Glide_V3-devel-2.60.15-7mdk
Glide_SDK-2.2-14
The dependencies mention only the DRI, I added the Glide_V3-devel rpm
after failing to build with just the DRI rpms installed. Failed again.
What does it take to build the frickin' XFree86-4.0.1 src rpm? What is
up with the process just stopping without error messages?

This is annoying behavior. I fixed this by making the lilo executable
non-executable, so these GUI config programs can't run LILO and undo grub.
This may be the brute-force way, but it keeps grub installed.

Subject: How do I install Win95 without stuffing up my MBR?
Now, please, please, stop throwing bricks at me.
I write educational software (sort of) and not
everybody uses Linux. I have so far held back on
installing Win9x, because I was warned it would
take over my MBR and I'd end up in deep shit.
Now,
I have two hard disks. Each is bootable, DOS6.22
and Win3.1, and Linux resides on hdb14.
I would like to upgrade one of my Win3.1 copies
to Win95. I was warned by the colleague who gave
me his copy of Win95 that Win95 would "try and
take over my system". Good-bye LILO, I have to
restore the MBR, but I'd rather keep all this to
a minimum of hassles. My question is: if I upgrade
the copy of Win3.1 on my second physical hard disk,
will Win95 stuff up my MBR (which, I assume, lives
on my first hard disk?).
It's not funny, you know. I do not want to install
Win95, but I have to. There are too many people
out there who have never even *seen* a DOS command
line.
Any suggestions, any help, any horror stories you
may contribute are really, really, welcome.
Thank you in advance.

Of course. There is an image-viewer planned for you, which intends to

so it's not at version 1.0 yet, however it's quite useful and stable.

Printing the document "to file" from Word will create a postscript
document (with a ".prn" suffix I think). I think you will have to
remove som fluff from the start of the file though.

Setenv is used to set environment variables in the C and TC shells. The bash
command to set a variable is:
VARNAME=value
If you later type export VARNAME or prefix the above command with "export "
then bash will pass that variable to any sub-proccesses, otherwise they will
not get the variable passed to them.

This is something that works surprisingly well for me on Word
documents:
$ strings the.doc | less
You don't get the formatting, but you get the text.
Other things to try: Star Office, ApplixWare etc. (other office suits
for Linux).
