I'm a happy user of SuSE 5.3 and wonder if I should move to SuSE 6.0
I've some concerns about stability of 6.0 and would appreciate to hear
about the experiences of those of tried the new beast...

Thanks to those sending their comments

Try the Linux Bootdisk HOW-TO

http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP/HOWTO/Bootdisk-HOWTO.html

And one thing: If I'm not mistaken, RedHat, 5.1 at least, doesn't create
emergency stuff during installation; it creates a disk with lilo if you
don't want to install lilo on your hard disk. This is a normal boot disk,
not an emergency disk.

Isn't this just a mini-distro of linux, made just for routing?

I plan to use my existing RH52 installation, with a PPP modem connection to
my ISP as my default gateway. I want to masquerade my local ip adresses
(192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.2) through the dhcp issued address from the ISP, with
NAT.

Is there any good place to start looking for info about this?

A few points here:

1) WP's PS output is indeed a bit odd. Try viewing it with Ghostview
(or a similar PS viewer) sometime; there'll be no margins. That
doesn't seem to affect printouts, though, and if you use ps2pdf, the
resulting PDF file will be fine.
2) WP's PS output varies from driver to driver. Some of the WP PostScript
drivers give Linux print filters fits because of NON-PostScript stuff
that's appended to the start or end of the file. Using a different PS
driver may help. I've found the Apple LaserWriter drivers do pretty
well on my system for B&W printing, and the QMS magicolor driver had
been fine for me for color printing to an Epson Stylus Color 400.
3) Without seeing, I can't be sure, but it may not even be PostScript
output you're seeing on that last page; it could be something else.
4) You could probably create a Linux print filter that would process the
file in some useful way to eliminate the problem, but I'm far from an
expert on creating print filters OR on processing PostScript, so I
can't offer any tips in that area. If somebody has such a filter,
though, I'd be interested in seeing it.

Hi, We're running a P75, 40MB RAM, RH 5.2, Kernel 2.2.1, which was a clean
install last week. I tried to run the pwconv program, but this seemed to
(did) hang after creating the lockfiles. The password file we're
attempting to use is from a previous install, as this contains details for
around 80 users, but before the installation we had no problem adding
users, or immediately after the re-installation.

After attempting to run pwconv, I can no longer add users, and the error:

configuration error - Unknown Item 'CREATE HOME'

now appears after typing in the username at logon, and before the username
on telnet sessions to the server. I've re-installed the shadow utils.rpm,
but with no success.

If you've got any ideas, or think you could point me in the right
direction I'd be very grateful - Could replies please be sent to
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Cheers,

Jamie Laundon

Hi.
I am running REdhat 5.2 on a PII with a Intel 3D express AGP 8
megs gaphics card. I installed REdhats special server for this card. (I
had to install Linux without any of the X components so it would
recognize the new XBF server) I have also installed the two font packs
(75 + 100 DPi but nothing else X related) Any ideas what this could
be? I have included a script typescript of the server output. PLease
clue me in here. Thanks so much, Please email me if possible as I need
this server up so I can install a design tool I need for a class
project. Thanks,

Well, it might be downgrading then. But remember that if you are using Red
Hat you should consider recompiling those libraries from the original
packages anyway, even though you are using the "same" version - Red Hat
tends to make their own modifications to about everything so you can't
expect any of the libraries that come with RH to be "standard".

That would be the best solution, but I don't have a clue about where to
find the sources..

And has some javascript security holes which allow a web server maintainer
to brewse your harddisk. 4.08 does not have this hole.

Hi there, =

As far as I know 3c509B is ISA PnP card (at least the one I've seen).
First, check if kernel module for your card is installed (lsmod). If
it's not - you can try two things: =

1) use pnpdump to get possible configurations for the card (io address
and irq) and then make /etc/isapnp.conf file from
pnpdump command output (pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf and edit
isapnp.conf file). Next you should make /etc/conf.modules file which
contains:
                  alias eth0 3c509
                  options 3c509 io=3D0x____ irq=3D_
with the same values of io and irq you have choosen in isapnp.conf
Reboot and see if your kernel module was installed. =

I don't have any idea it it'll work that way ;-) but since you are
desperate :-)

2) On 3com homesite you can find DOS program that allows to turn
off PnP feature and specify io and irq for the card. Turn it off then
and use io and irq you've set in conf.modules file.
This _should_ work.
Feel free to contact me in the case of problems
Best,
MK

Ben:

Thanks for the short tutorial in X-Windows. It was very helpful in my understanding of
how things work. I was particularly interested in your statement below about setting up
a browser (Netscape) so that it would be the only application that runs. How do you do
this? Install only X-Windows, Netscape Navigator, and then what? How do you do the
"endless loop" part?
I work in a public library with public access PCs using Navigator. It would be great to
use Linux instead of NT for these PCs.
