All of a sudden i'm unable to telnet to my Mandrake 8.0 box. I'm a little
confused here....i wen tthru the services list and came across these
1. xinetd--what is the role of this daemon
2. elnet --when i try starting this service using mandrake control center
it complains saying unrecognised service
3. proftpd--if i have xinetd running do i still have this daemon for ftp ?

any help will be greatly appreciated.

Why the emphasis? Why should we care how much of your
disk space you have used?

Talk to your ISP. Only they will know precisely how their
email is set up and whether they support user-determined
forwarding.

I've noticed something similar too, but only on the first connection
with a specific host. Trying Bit Twisters solution here, but will
need to wait for a reboot to see if it makes any difference since I've
already ssh'd to all local machines during this uptime.

I did't try this yet, either but you could try `ssh -v' on first
connection (verbose output) and then compare it to subsequent
connections. Or are you seeing sloth regardless if its first connect
or not?

Sounds like you omitted the 'shared' config option
when compiling openssl. There are details at the
end of the INSTALL file in the openssl tarball.

Subject: HELP: Boot failure after IDE drive reconfiguration
Date: Sat, 02 Jun 2001 16:27:42 GMT

This should be an interesting one....The short version is that I went from 3
hard disks and a DVD-ROM drive to 2 hard disks, a DVD, and a CD-Burner and
now LILO fails to load RedHat Linux v7.0

Original Configuration:
hda : 12.9GB w/ System Commander 2000 v5.01 and Windows-98 (FAT-32)
hdb : 2.4GB (FAT-32)
hdc : 19.5GB RedHat Linux v7.0 (ext2) w/ LILO loaded on the root superblock
(not the MBR)
hdd : DVD-ROM drive

Synopsis:
I pulled the 2.4GB drive (hdb) and installed a Phillips PCRW800 CD-Burner in
it's place. System Commander, after some tinkering, recognized the 12.9GB
as Drive 0 and the 19.5GB as Drive 1; however, all attempts to boot Linux
fail w/o any error messages. It looks like System Commander is performing
the handoff correctly (I re-installed it and checked the partition table
configuration) but LILO isn't working.

Where I am Now:
Running Win-98 (ugh!) and w/o access to any of the partitions on the 19.5GB
ext2 drive (did I mention I don't have Linux rescue disks - sigh). I'm
considering the following options:

1. Restore the original drive configuration, get Linux back up, and make
some rescue disks so I can go back in later.
2. Re-Install LILO from the RedHat installation CD.

Suggestions? Would the hda, hdc, and hdd designations under Linux be
altered as a result of the CD-Burner installation? I didn't think so,
but....

Thanks in advance.

Some people have asked about a `boot SCSI before IDE' option in the
BIOS of the board. Indeed, there is something to set the boot
sequence. There, I can choose floppy, IDE hard disk (it tells me the
model), CD-ROM, and ``SCSI boot device'', and I can choose the order
it is tried. Of course, I put the SCSI boot device before the IDE
drives.

I'm not 100% sure but I think it's an ASUS board and here are the
stanzas from `lspci -v' -- maybe that helps you to determine the
model.

00:00.0 Host bridge: VIA Technologies, Inc. VT82C691 [Apollo PRO] (rev 44)

00:0b.0 SCSI storage controller: Symbios Logic Inc. (formerly NCR) 53c895 (rev 0

I'm sorry, I'm not in the office right now so I can't give you more
details on the motherboard.

Maybe when the system booted, it started LILO from the wrong drive?
Hm. But the contents of the IDE drive haven't changed, so even if it
gives some read errors, the effect of booting the system from that
drive should be the same as before we moved the system -- in
principle, the system boots, but it starts emitting read errors to the
system console.

Just look at the available gnome packages on your installation
media and try installing those that seem relevant.

Probably because you seem to spell telnet or telnetd very badly.

Sigh, man xinetd and you will learn [how to phrase a meaningful

I am a @Home user and running redhat7.1. I am using an ipchains that i

I have it set to log everything right now so i can see whats going on
with it. I keep getting these entries on my logs quite a few times a day
and always in sets of about 3 or 4. I am curious as to know what they
are. It looks like some kind of loopback that is trying to connect to
the news service on my machine? Or could this be a spoof trying to
connect to my machine ? Has anyone else seen this or might know what it
is? the ww.xx.yyy.zzz is my ip.

Well, surely there is a workaround to this as just about 90% of the
LAN's out there use NAT and IP masquerading due to the extremely limited
supply of public IP addresses.

I've found some howto's on the subject... Trouble is every time I get to
fiddling with my Linux firewall I gotta learn everything all over again
because I so rarely need to touch the box that I forget everything --
Unlike with W2K where I'm a complete wiz because I have to twiddle with
the thing on a daily basis it seems ;-)

I just wish there were some GPL software out there that would take care
of all the firewall configuration for you with a no-brainer-made-for-
the-masses interface. Configuring IPchains makes my brain hurt! :(

MBONE tools sdr, vic & vat could be a good selection. Most cameras with
pci/brooktree boards seems to be supported ( at least in BSD's), for
audion you need something with full-duplex ( most soundblaster will do)

Actually, I have an SBLive under RH7. I just use
Creative's own open source driver with no problems. I
tried using alsa for a while, but could never get it working.
take a look at:
http://opensource.creative.com/
In any case, you're probably better off using the manufacturer's
driver than a third party driver.

Hi,

this is probably a very silly question, but I couldn't find any info
yet. Here is my problem:

I decided to tighten up security on my linux box and wanted to close
port 111. Unfortunately I came across a strange problem: When I shut
down portmap, sendmail, syslogd and some other services take a very
long time to start. When the system is up and running and I try to
login, Ithe same thing happens: After entering the password it
takes a long time to log in. I don't have any rpc programs running and
I don't connect to any rpc servers, so why is it a problem to stop
portmap?

I have
kernel 2.4.4
portmap 4.05
redhat 6.0 with lots of programs upgraded

Any info on this is greatly appreciated.

Hi,

have a look at /usr/src/linux/Documentation/Changes. There you will
find all ppp aliases (depending on your kernel version). For kernel
2.4.4 the aliases are

alias char-major-108 ppp_generic
alias /dev/ppp ppp_generic
alias tty-ldisk-3 ppp_generic
alias ppp-compress-21 bsd_comp
alias ppp-compress-24 ppp_deflate
alias ppp-compress-26 ppp_deflate
