I have recently installed NT Server on my system. NT is installed on the
first disk, while Caldera Open Linux 2.3 is on the second disk. LILO was
installed to the Linux partition. I was previously using Boot Magic to dual
boot between Windows 98 and Linux. Unfortunately Boot Magic does not work
under NT Server.

I need to boot Linux using the NT Boot Manager.

I have tried the following entry
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(1)partition(1)\="Linux"

This should be about right (from my somewhat limited knowledge of NT) but
does not seem to want to play ball.

Is there anyone out there who has done this? If so I would appreciate any
assistance.

Thanks
Wyn Jones

Is Linux talking to your sound card?

Can you play any other audio (wav, au, MP3, etc.) out your
sound card?

I have used this command to get a query of all software installed on my
system
through RPM:
rmp -qa --queryformat '%{FILESTATES} %{NAME} %{BUILDTIME:day} %{SUMMARY}
\n''

I quite do not understand what the meaning of the formatter FILESTATES.
It either has
a 0, 2 or (none) in this field. I have tried to find some documentation
on this formatter but
have not been successful. I believe that a 0 (zero) is installed, and
possible a 2 (two)
means that it is not installed, but I do not know what (none) means.
Also, is there
any other number that would be in this field? If there is then what is
their meaning?
I am using awk to format this farther, and wanting to test in the
package is install to
make my own custom report.

Thanks to who all read, and many thanks to those who reply!

Hello,

regarding your "bus error":
I also had this strange error.
In the SuSE archive I found the solution: the NS needs a file
  /tmp/ndebug
As it was not there, I created an empty file as root and did
a chmod 666. Voila, no more crashes.

Basically netstat -vatu also shows you the connection. With iptraf,
open it first, then start those clients (one at a time), watch really
closely and copy down all the port numbers including tcp and udp,
they can use a few of them.

Another way is to use the "socklist" script came with procinfo
package. Run socklist can you will see which program open which port.

Yet another way, undex X, open qps or ktop, click on the program
and have a look at the sockets tab.

Blocking by port number may leak because it is possible to configure
the AOL client to use another range of ports. You can try find out
the AOL messaging server address and block them, seems to be most
effective this way. Also, those server may do only one thing, email
and web to/from AOL will not be affected.

I also had problems with the address book which made it completely
useless.
I searched the web and found the following solution which worked
for me:

http://www.ufaq.org/unix_address_crash.html
Why Does My Addressbook Crash Whenever I Try To Use It

Close Communicator and find a line that looks like this
       in ~/.netscape/preferences.js:
          user_pref("ldap_2.server.pab.locale", "xxx");
       Change it to:
          user_pref("ldap_2.server.pab.locale", "C");

       Restart Communicator.
If it still crashes you may have a corrupt addressbook.
       Delete ~/.netscape/pab.na2.

I've always had pretty good luck using lilo to boot
Linux/NT/Win98. You configure lilo to boot an NT partition
just like a DOS one.

Bill and I are acquainted, but only by emails; it has always seemed to me
that he gives good answers.

That sounds like the modem was disconnected the first time while
there was a PPP connection and then on reconnecting the modem the PPP
connection simply resumed. The modem doesn't know about such things
as MTU/MRU, PPP link negotiations, and networking protocols. That
would seem to me to be an unusual occurrence but it's the only thing
that comes to mind.

The modem is a part of the physical layer for PPP and only knows
about modem protocols. The command "kill -HUP $(pidof pppd)" will
terminate pppd and pppd will shut everything down properly.

Then again ... TurboLinux uses its own scripts for setting up modem
connections. It sets the MRU=MTU=296 (for ppp/modem connections)! 296 is
hard coded into its gnome-ppp programme (it is apparently the suggestion
usually made for a slow/bad connection).

High bandwidth can use 1500. Modem connections usually use 576 (the later
versions of MicroSoft's Windows dial up wizard set it to 576 for modems
rather than the default 1500 that used to be used and still is used for
ethernet - apparently many were reducing the default from 1500 to 576
to get better throughput in Windows with modems).

It caused no problems until the London Times set up a new web server which
would not send small packets. I use gnome, but no longer gnome-ppp and had
to find where TurboLinux hid the MRU/MTU settings (not in /etc/ppp, of
course) and changed to MRU=MTU=576 (572 was not large enough). All is now
working.

That was the first site to which I had any trouble connecting (would not
reduce its packet size to a legal size that the web server thought was too
small).

I am running the gnome desktop under RedHat 6.2. I feel stupid,
but I can't seem to find a way to change the click interval between
the clicks when one double clicks on a choice. It is a bit fast,
and has been that way for a while, and I would like to slow it
down. I've tried everything I could find in the Gnome tool box.

I don't know much about Linux yet- my background for the past 20
years has been other Unixes: SunOS, Solaris, SCO.

How I learned is by doing, and by being curious, and.. by writing
about it. Funny thing, but the minute you start trying to
explain something in writing, you often realize that you aren't
quite as knowledgeable as you thought you were, so you poke
around to get the answers, and you learn.

Part of the "writing" I do is tests:
http://pcunix.com/linuxtest.html is a fun (well, I hope it's
fun!) way to test your knowledge and to get you interested in
things that you might not already know about. The 560 odd
questions pretty well cover the gamut from newbie to fairly
experienced; I add more as I learn more :-)

Another poster suggested a newer kernel, that sounds like a good idea,
but since it worked well for so long, I'm not sure it will solve this
problem.

I had very similar errors about 8 to 9 months ago. I didn't save them,
so I'm not sure that they were exactly the same. Miscellaneous processes
would ie, and sometimes the system would lock up.

Replacing the memory solved the problem.

BTW, I've been using the "bad" memory in another system (a much slower
one, with a different make of MB, since then with no problems. I'm not
sure I'd try that with yours, my system was never stable until I
replaced the memory, it did not fail after a year's use.

Well, let me add my two penneth. I tried Grip, but on my (admittedly
less than powerful) system it was less than half the speed of cd2mp3.
I'd recommend cd2mp3 - simple command line utility which does a job and
does it well.

I used freeamp as well, until I discovered xmms. Never looked back.
