Stay away from ATI. The "ATI-TV Wonder" is the single worst expansion
card I have _ever_ used.  There were no Windows 2000 or NT drivers;
the Windows 95/98 drivers were literally buggy to the point of being
unusable; the "fixed drivers" ATI released over a year and a half
later were actually _worse_; for some inexplicable reason, the Linux
bt848 (or whatever) drivers don't work with the card, even though it
actually is a bt848.

That dismal experience has guaranteed that I will never, ever buy
another ATI product. I sold the card for $50, and the only good thing
I can say about the card is that it has pretty good resale value.

Hi.
AFAIK... That is a driver problem. At least, Hauppauge WinTV series have
Win2K driver.
Using this driver on other TV tuner also enables Win2K support (TV function
will be disabled in this way).

About the Linux driver, I have heard Linux kernel includes WinTV support. I
don't use Linux, so no way to confirm.
(Probably other TV tuners can be supported as well?)

So, for these, probably WinTV is the one for you...

Neither is "better" security-wise. With both you can choose the services
you want to run (and therefore you control the level of security).

RedHat is easier to install and get working, but you must be wary of all
the services that are installed by 'default'. If you do a 'custom'
installation, you should be OK.

Unfortunate to hear when I was contemplating purchasing that card. What would
make a good alternative?

I have a fresh installation of RH7. I got the named service configured the
way I had it before on RH62, but this version won't transfer zones to the
secondary dns' I have set up, nor will it refresh the external servers on
the net. The name server does answer all requests specifically referencing
it by IP.

Is there anything specific to RH7 I have to do to correct this? I don't
*think* I've forgotten anything. I need some help, please.

BTW. Linuxconf doesn't like the SOA setup on my copy of RH7. I upgraded to
It gives an error message

But the computers that DOS ran on weren't big enough to run big OSs.
Also OSs were OSs before things like virtual memory and multitasking
were used. The first OSs were program loaders. Still OSs, though.

Besides, DOS can be a very good OS under some circumstances. For
instance, the FDA doesn't allow multitasking OSs on medical equipment.
This makes DOS a very good OS for that purpose.

geektalkd... But they are all very plain. I'm looking for one that will
notify users either visually or verbally when there is activity.

.xinitrc is only used when you're using startx. If you're using a
display manager like gdm, you need to edit .xsession instead.

I have no idea what could be the appropriate newsgroup to
seek for help on this, but I'm hoping that I'll be able to
find some info or pointers with you guys.

I just downloaded the trial version of VMWare for Linux, to
emulate Win on my Linux box (I'm so sick of this dual boot! :-))

When I run it (after installing and configuring everything),
I try to emulate Win2K, and it goes through the boot process
(including counting the memory, etc.), but it ends up telling
me "Operating System not found"

(pretty much as an actual machine would tell you if you
didn't connect the hard drive, or if there wasn't a hard
drive at all).

I went to the vmware site, but didn't find any FAQ or
troubleshooting section. Could anyone give me a hand, or
give me some pointers about where to find the info or where
to ask?

Thanks!

Copy a kernel from another machine or download one from kernel.org.
Use dd to copy it to a floppy and rdev it to whereever your / should
be mounted.

#> dd if=bzImage of=/dev/fd0 //Copy kernel to floppy
#> rdev /dev/fd0 /mnt/hda1 //point the kernel on the floppy to your
Linux install

Hope this helps

Next time you compile your kernel enable SysReq. Print out the SysReq docs
and put that paper away with the printed copy of your partition table.

Microsoft offered a Unix, XENIX, and users stuck to DOS despite Microsoft's
advocacy for XENIX. Even with modern free Unix implementations the public at
large has a hard time accepting Unix. Apple probably has the best approach
with the upcoming MacOS X, bury and hide Unix so the user doesn't even know
it's there.

HI.
I'm installing Linux from Scratch, and while building glibc i launched
top, and was surprised that the compiling programs (make, cpp & gcc)
usually use about 5-10% of the CPU's power, with maxima of about 45%.
Top is telling me +- 65 % user, 10% system, 0.5% nice, 25% idle, but in
the CPU-sorted list, the first two or three items user 5,0 and2.5%, the
next 5 somthing between 1 and 0.1, and the rest 0.0%.

I assume some systemCPU is overhead, but sometimes it's working for a
couple of second on one compiling instruction... Where does the 60%
system use come from then???
And, I don't want the 25% idle, I want to go to bed and therefore speed
up the compiling, damn'it! ;-)

Who can clear things up a bit on this?

All numbers checked...
By the way, my system is a amd k6-2 450 w/ 64 meg ram, but the hd i'm
installing glibc on, is an old and thus slow (I don't know (don't wanna
know) how slow) 500 mb harddisk.

Thanks, Tijmen

p.s. Maybe for this kind of questions a newsgroup
alt.comp.os.linux.justwannaknow should be started...

Yeah, sure. The docs mention "Might make your system unstable".
I have kernel 2.2.15 and my X crashes about once a day. So I enabled SysReq,
*nothing* else changes, and my box statistically correctly proven crashes
about triplefold as much... Shut it off, and it worked fine (well, 1 crash a
day is fine for the average windows guy :-}

BTW, my server (same distro, redhat 6) crashed just 3 times in 2 years: once a
kernel panic, onse a dosemu crash due to chkdisk, and once some messages
unkillable continiously spawning over all consoles. (and once after a new
kernelcompile, once trough lightening, and once through a loose CPU fan plug.)

The ungracefull way to exit from "X" is the <ctrl-alt-backspace>.
Anoter poster mentioned edit /etc/inittab and make the entry
  id:3:initdefault:
to start Linux in mode 3 instead of 4 or 5.

You might also check your startup scripts to make sure that

Subject: Problem with Netscape (?)
Date: Sat, 14 Oct 2000 17:07:35 -0500

I'm running Redhat 6.0, Kernel 2.2.16, 64 Megs, KDE, Netscape 4.74, IDE
hard drives, SCSI DAT and scanner and I awoke this morning to a couple
of strange happenings - one of which is still plagueing me. This is a
standalone box, dialed up to the Internet with a Courier v.90.
The system was working normally when I logged out last night. By the
time I was ready to compute this morning, cron had made a backup and
ejected the tape. I could not connect with the modem. Turning debug on
in my pppd script let me fix that problem (without explaining why the
problem existed!) and I started Netscape. In fact, I started and killed
Netscape a number of times before finally realizing that all it needed
was more time to display something. I have since determined that "more
time" to be something on the order of 1-1/2 minutes. At that point, I
started checking. This doesn't appear to be a general
name lookup problem because my ip-up script includes:

# ask some NTP servers what time it is. Best wins.
ntpdate -sb time.nist.gov library.airnews.net ntp5.tamu.edu
ticktock.wang.com
hwclock --systohc # write it to the BIOS clock

...which executes normally within seconds of the handshake and obviously
resolves the name(s) somehow:

Still, I looked at the 'normal' stuff.

And looked for a funky route, both connected and not connected:

I didn't mention that maybe an hour deep into this mess, I tried
rebooting the machine. That obviously didn't help, either, else I
wouldn't be asking for more ideas. Also, I normally run junkbuster and
portsentry. Cache is turned off in my browser and I killed portsentry
manually (both instances) with no change of symptom.

Any ideas?

TIA
.
