Subject: Emulation and writing to the code segment
Date: Sun, 22 Oct 2000 03:30:19 GMT

Hello,

I have heard of a technique which is supposed to make emulators
three times faster. The emulator takes a piece of code without
branches and translates it into native code. Then executes it. If at
a later time, the emulation comes back to a translated piece of
code, all the emulator has to do is to run it again.

But this needs to be able to write to the code segment (or to
execute the data segment.) Under Linux and gcc, an instruction like,

    goto L2;
L1:
    a = 2.718281828;
L2:
    p = &&L1;
    *(int *) p = 2;

Gives a SIGINT.

Is there any way?

Should I ask this in another of the Linux newsgroups?

I have found out what this means. I had chosen IDE driver as a module.

Yep.
It was. Then it became SCO.
Then it was bought out by Caldera recently.

Just like Microfocus cobol used to be Microsoft Cobol.
Now it's owned by Merant corporation.

Anything good they had was sold in favor of this Windows thing.
When the Windows thing happened and dos was doomed then they
threw off all their old commerical ventures into corporate america, one by one.

IIRC, the link editor (ld) has an internal representation of the dynamic
libraries. So when you change the libraries, you need to tell it to take
the new settings into account.

I don't remember how to do that and I'm stuck on a Solaris box!

Sheesh... I spent much of the last month trying to get my otherwise
fine-and-dandy Debian Potato to recognize my serial ports. Along the way
I... lost sleep, fried a motherboard, doubted my sanity, seriously
considered writing Linus out of my will, and, in general, fumed and pouted.
But WAIT! I JUST FOUND THE PROBLEM...

I was trying to use ttys0, and I _should_ have used ttyS0!!!

How has everyone else in the world avoided this diabolical plot?

I am using RedHat 6.1 and have minicom-1.82.1 binary RPM
installed. Found lrzsz-0.12.20-2 binary RPM and installed it. Then
I was able to upload files of all kinds with zmodem binary. I use it
to dial in to a shell account. But if you want a PPP connection this is
not it. I think minicom is for a serial line connection. If you get
minicom working as user , then you put the files in your home directory
and minicom together with lrzsz finds them or your can browse them in
minicom menu.

Since 1998, the image of "Software Wars" has accurately describe the
situation in the world of personal computer software. A picture is
worth a thousand words, and this image serves as a powerful tool for
Linux advocacy, pictorially showing the events in the competition for
world domination between proprietary and free (open source) software.
You will be touched by it, and appreciate its humor.

The image has just been updated to reflect the latest events. It can

The only ref to "console" in my /etc/syslog.conf
is this:

   #kern.* /dev/console

But I think any system-generated message that pops up on a user's
console should be identified as such and should appear to bash as a
comment, like

[*root*] $ # [kernel] hdd: or whatever ...

Use xset to ask for a black screen after 10 seconds. Don't change the other
DPMS settings if you love your screen; shutting down is hard.

I think it's xset. I'm not home now so I might be wrong.

Greetings all,

I finally got Peanut going on my system after several false starts while
I tried to figure out what Peanut <REALLY> calls my graphics card. Now,
I've got a beautiful desktop and am renewing my acquaintance with Unix.

I use Mindspring/Earthlink for my Windoze access to the 'Net, but would
like to use my Peanut Linux. I tried the 'pppsetup' script. The modem
dials, connects, but there I hang. Then I tried the KDE PPP setup. I
get connected and a prompt from Mindspring, but I can't seem to get my
ID across the lines. I tried PAP/CHAP, scripted connection, and
terminal-based, all to no avail.

Has anyone done this? Does anyone know if Mindspring uses PAP/CHAP or a
different method of authentication? Anyone have any suggestions for a
script for KDE PPP?

All help gratefully accepted.

Get the real thing at http://www.cybex.com/. We have an 8-port. They're not
cheap but they are impeccable. You can hot-key between servers or push a
button to select. Special triple cables (hydra cables) support keyboard
(both size plugs), mouse, and video, all in a single cable multiple
attachments at each end. The Cybex box fakes mouse & keyboard signals so
that you don't have to wait for each machine to boot before switching to the
next, (ie: you can start all 8 servers at once, and they all boot up
simultaneously, successfully recognizing their associated keyboard and
mouse).

A 4-port sells for about $200 Canadian (about $135 US), not including the
cables. The downside is that you have extra cables from each machine to the
Cybex box as compared to tapping into each server via a software window. But
the plus side is that you are really on the machine as a console.

Worth the bucks.

Micer.

I believe that m3u's are playlists. For example, let say CDa has 15

Good evening. Somehow I suspect (am not sure) that my boot process
dropped the ability to see my scsi card as later in the effort there is
a msg that /dev/sda1 is not recognized as a block device and the
suggestion/result offered that I run 'e2fsck -b 8193 /dev/sda1' suggests
a corrupt superblock or that the drive isn't really there. I know this
isn't so as it used to work and I have not adjusted the kernel (yet).
Previous logs show sda and sda1 listed along with hda1..4 during the
course of the boot process and now just the hda(n) for whatever reason.
If anyone knows a way to get the boot process to recognize the scsi and
associated drive (again) without loosing what is on the drive or
possibly some other reason that is contributing to this problem
(kernel?) and how to correct it I'd be most appreciative if you could
LMK. Thank you in advance...

Info: Debian V 2.2, Kernel 2.2.17, Adaptec AHA-2920 (fdomain driver is

Subject: Kernel woes

Reply-To: "Ninewands" <newsgroup>

Okay, I decided to bite the bullet and try building myself a kernel
customized for my machine. Now, as you can tell from the "full headers"
view of this message, I am stuck with using Windoze (my box is dual-boot) to
get to the net because ppp doesn't seem to want to work. The source tree
that I'm using for this monstrosity is kernel 2.2.17 and I'm building it in
an otherwise stock RedHat 6.0 environment.

The problem I'm running in to is this:

Initially, I built the kernel with ppp support compiled directly in and with
Plug 'n Pray support. My modem, which is to be configured as /dev/ttyS2, is
a Diamond Supra Express 56i, which WAS working fine under the stock Red Hat
2.2.5 kernel. When I booted the new kernel, ppp line discipline, etc.
registered and all was okay and no errors were reported during the boot
process. I logged in as root and did a

# setserial /dev/ttyS2

to see if the modem was configured properly and got:

/dev/ttyS2: device or resource busy

In the process of poking around for a fix, I tried setting PnP OS to "Yes"
in my motherboard BIOS (Abit BP6, with 2 Celeron 366s) ... suddenly, it all
worked okay, but when I tried to connect to the 'net, kppp reported that
there was no ppp support in the kernel (huh?). Also, when I booted into
Windoze, very few of my PnP devices worked ... so I set PnP OS back to "No".
Now everything works in Windoze as well as it did before, but Linux has me
stuck.

I opened up the old RedHat 6 (2.2.5) kernel configuration and copied down
the PnP and ppp values, put them into the config for the new kernel and
rebuilt ... no improvement.

By now I am almost hopelessly confused. Mt box is significantly faster with
the strippped-down custom kernel, but I've got to get my modem and ppp
support working. Everything else seems to work fine (scsi-ise emulation,
SMP support, the "unsupported" driver for my scsi card (a Tekram DC-315U)
but the modem is eluding my. Please help.

Thanks and
Regards,

Ninewands

Maybe you are trying to launch Apache as a non-root user: it tries to bind to the
privileged port 80, and it can't because only root can bind to ports bellow 1024.
If the problem persists after launching Apache as root, check current listening
ports with a command like netstat -npat and verify which proccess is listening on
port 80. Kill the process and try again.

Try starting Apache as root: ports bellow 1024 are privileged ports that only
programs owned by root can bind to. However, this doesn't mean that Apache
is going to run as a root program: as soon as the process binds to port 80, it
switches itself to the user/group specified in /etc/httpd.conf
