Didn't catch the DOJ stuff. The illegal vendor licensing plans, the inability
to buy PCs without WinX, regardless if you wanted it or not, nor the ability to
get your money back even if it was promised in the eula?

Do a little research and birng your self up to speed on this subject.

Hi,

Any of you have positive experience installing Netscape V6 on
RedHat6.2?

Things never got right at my side, no matter old versions or the
latest preview 3, and no matter which site I download it...

Comments and suggestions please. Thanks!

It _is_ formatted; otherwise it would be rejected by swapon(8), and not
show up in /proc/swaps. It has a lower priority than /dev/hda1, and will
not be used until /dev/hda1 is filled up.

You can use either cat or dd. However, you *SHOULDN'T* copy a filesystem
which is mounted rw. In that case you can very easily get an inconsistent
image which is worthless.

Here's what I use;

communicator-v475-us.x86-unknown-linux2.2.tar.gz

and I just downloaded;

communicator-v476-us.x86-unknown-linux2.2.tar.gz

Works fine for me.

When you uninstall your old copy of Netscape, do you rm -rf the install
directory? It's quite possible that it's left some crap behind that's
affecting the useability of your new installation.

If all goes well, you MIGHT be able to get away with re-installing 4.74
without having to download a new(er) version, but if it comes down to it,
that's my advice.

>I have installed the recommended patch from SuSE

Me, I don't usually trust patches released by a corporation. As much as I
like SuSE, and really have enjoyed working with SuSE from 5.0 up to my
existing 6.4 installation, I prefer to get as much as possible right from
the source; in this case, Netscape.

I found that my system began to perform much more smoothly once I upgraded
XFree86 to 4.1, and even moreso when I compiled XF86 4.01 from source. After
I did that, a lot of things stopped crashing at random.

I have a fairly new workstation running Windows 98 and am wondering if
there's a way to repartition it without loosing everything I have on

I'm planning on installing RedHat on the new partition I create. Is
there anything I should be careful of when partitioning to ensure
everything is fine for RH? (I recall something about the main linux
partition having to be located in a low numbered sector of the
harddrive?)

Whoa! Upgrading the OS is the Windoze solution to things. The Linux solution
is much simpler, can result in all your daemons not missing a single beat,
and will likely fix the problem rather than using a band-aid and not knowing
what was wrong in the first place.

I've suggested that XFree86 be upgraded to 4.01, compiled from source,
preferably, and that the latest version of Netscape be installed from
Netscape's site; after the old installation was rm -rf'ed.

One thing I forgot to mention, however, was that I've also experienced the
occasional problem with my ~/.netscape directory. It might also help to
backup bookmarks.html and preferences.js to another location, rm -rf the
.netscape directory, re-run Netscape to create a new profile, close Netscape
and replace the backed up files to their rightful location.

I'm not sure what was fscking up; the cookies file, the cert7.db file, or
what, but there is quite a bit of information packed into that directory
that could all lead to a potential problem.

>For 6.4 if you can't get the 7.0 version to work, the only thing that is

{shaking head}

>As I said before just update to 7.0, it is far superior

That's what they said about Win 3.1 to 95, then to 98. Or NT to NT4, then
to 2K. Upgrading your entire OS to fix a problem with one package is the
solution for the Windoze world, and it's far too painful an undertaking
for my likes.

Always remember that with any new product comes new problems. My advice
is to stick with what you know, fix all the problems with 6.4, and possibly
upgrade it above and beyond the 7.0 level - without the added bug(lets).

Yes, but you don't need it and it can seriously mess up your filesystem.
The ext2 filesystem that Linux uses was designed a bit more
intelligently than FAT, and does not suffer nearly as badly from
file fragmentation. This question crops up every so often; it tends to
lead to people yelling at each other. Go to
http://deja.com/home_ps.shtml , search comp.os.linux.misc for
"fragmentation", and you'll find a number of threads discussing this
very topic. HTH,

0. Create a text file called "myscript" or something. In that file,
put:

#!/bin/bash
# note the #! and the path to the shell. This tells the execution
# environment to use /bin/bash to interpret the following sequence
# of commands. Use # to add comments. Now we do a command--
echo "Hello, World!"

1. Save the file
2. chmod +x myscript
3. ./myscript

...and you don't have to limit yourself to bash. All shells are
scriptable to some extent, and Perl is... well, a sort of
nuclear-powered backhoe of a scripting language. Have fun, and remember
that SUID scripts are Not Allowed; you'll have to put a C wrapper around
any script that must run as root and make that wrapper SUID.

Hi Micer,
you want to make an alias. As root,
you can go like this:

alias ls='ls --color'

(using that format, you can make all
different aliases according to your
wishes)

To see what all your aliases are,
just issue the command alias as root.

You can put an alias in /etc/bashrc
if you edit the file by hand. Then it
will be permanent instead of disappearing
when you log out. If you use the alias
command at the prompt, the alias ends
when you quit your shell.

I don't have much linux experience, but I recently installed mandrake on a

windows partition intact (starting on sector 0) and I had a LOT of problems
installing/running mandrake. Then I used Partition Magic to just move my
windows partition to the end of the drive and install linux at the very
start. It worked great and LILO handles the dual boot perfectly. One problem
that I faced was that, when I installed linux at the end of the drive, I
couldn't make a /boot partition, for some reason, so I could never get into
linux unless I had the boot disk.

Give up! Go to the ethernet card manufacturer website and get the source

In the readme file, copy the compile instruction and pasted it in the

Those compile instructions are long and complex so it is prone to typos.

Haven't tried this one but will download it. I gave the version
6PR3 a try but that was soooo slow (on my 266MHz Pentium
laptop). Yes I know it is old, but it works. I will get a new one
when I move back to Sweden, honest :-)

I usually unpack netscape in, for example,
    /usr/local/navigator-v461.x86-unknown-linux2.0
or /usr/local/navigator-v475.x86-unknown-linux2.2
and then make a softlink "netscape" to the version I currently
run/test.

Anyway, when I was testing the 4.61 version I got a slightly
different format of the same old backtrace:

Program received signal SIGPIPE, Broken pipe.
