Well, I put in -O2 now and removed the unnecessary things. Yesterday night, I
did recompile things with the optimizations flags I had posted before and
things were somewhat faster. I also installed 'DivX ;-) Release 3' at my
Windows partition and Windows runs the DivX files much faster. Should I also
recompile things like glibc, sound things and video things with some more
optimization? I think for example that my glibc version is an i386 rpm.. And
does anyone know if for my card (Chips & Technologies CT65555, 2MB) It would
be faster to upgrade to a newere XFree86? (currently using 3.3.5)

thanks a lot!

Do as it says and manually run ext2.fsck on it

And next time you should properly unmount the FS before you shutdown the
PC (this is normally done during the shutdown process)

On my new Athlon system, after one non-damaging lockup while experimenting,
I ended up with the parameters "-d1 -X66 -u1 -c1". (-m16 was already the
default.) After seeing the tremendous improvement, I decided to try out
hdparm on my old 486 as well. That yielded no performance boost, but did
cause a staggering amount of damage to my ext2fs filesystem in a remarkably
short time. (And there'd been no previous filesystem corruption in its four
years of operation.)

I'm looking for something that will let me cut pieces out of mp3 files,
without having to decode/reencode them. I've found one such program for
Windows, but not yet for Linux. Something like what rmeditor (part of the
free RealProducer package -- check it out if you're at all interested in
RealMedia) does for RM would be great.

Hello,

I think I've made a great mistake ... modified /etc/profile following:

/etc/profile
....
alias log=clear;logout ###wipe the screen and then logout
alias lo=logout
....

after logging of, the system (SuSE 6.4) doesn't allow to log in, even if
user & password is right ---> automatic logout after login...

Is there any way to get into the system nethertheless ... e.g. by a boot
option (how ?? ... lilo is installed) or by a rescue disk (how to
proceed)

ftp-ing from an other system to my linux-machine isn't allowed (in order
to download /etc/profile, undo my modification and upload again !)

I would be thankfull for every successfull advice ...

Another possibility is to use "screen". This handy program lets you run
multiple virtual terminals within a single terminal, AND detach them, log
in on another terminal, and reattach them. Since I found it, I use it
constantly and do very nearly all my non-graphical work in it.

Screen is at:

 ftp://ftp.uni-erlangen.de/pub/utilities/screen/

if it's not already included in your distro.

Subject: kernel panic, no init found
Date: Thu, 2 Nov 2000 10:47:31 +0100

Hello,

I messed around a litlle bit with LILO and now I have the following problem.

When I boot Linux, the status messages show like:

...
"Partition check"
...
"Freeing unused kernel memory"

But then (after "Freeing unused kernel memory"), I get:
"Kernel panic: No init found. Try passing init= option to kernel"

and the system hangs...

When I boot from the Linux Bootdisk, go through the first questions and then
choose "Boot installed system", ( I have to supply the partition to boot
from, /dev/hdc1) the system comes up normally. So I think something in my
boot config is not quite right.

Does anyone know how to fix this, so I can boot from harddisk.

Thanks,
Dick

No problem. You can even run MacOS from _within_ Linux.

Not unless you have money to burn. Maybe not even then.

Precompiled binaries are more widely available for Linux/x86 than for
Linux/PPC; but non-open-source software is only a small fraction of what's
available for Linux, and most stuff will work fine on PPC.

I imagine it's because you don't have permission to access those devices.
Although VMware is setuid root, it seems to give up those privileges
after it does whatever setup it wants them for (and before it gets to the
printer)... On my Mandrake 7.1 system, /dev/parportN were only writable
by root; I chmod'ed them for the sake of VMware, after which I had no
trouble using my parallel-port scanner (not supported by SANE, alas). Oh,
I also had to set the port to ECP mode in my system's BIOS -- EPP wasn't
adequate.

If all you want to do is print, and you don't need direct access to the
parallel port, you might try another approach: print over the "network"
to the host system.

Fascinating... I'll have to test that. I'd been assuming that the clutter
arose from all times when I had to kill -9 netscape; I guessed that when
that happened, it lost track of the files it had downloaded in that
session, and so never purged them.

This is what /var/log/messages show, nothing extraordinary. The only
difference I've noticed is the kernel-specific messages which seem
to always appear now. But Netscape & w3m won't go anywhere, neither can I
telnet out. Is there a kppp keyword or ppp keyword that I'm missing? I
know the modem is okay since I can minicom out...

This has me stumped. I have a Win98 box connected to this Mandrake 6.0
2-2.13mdk (IIRC) kernel Linux box with IPmasq (that worked perfectly fine

Thanks for any assistance.

<< I am wondering whether there is any way to use AOL (America OnLine) system

I too was wondering the same. I requested info from AOL and this was the
response I got:

"I want to personally thank you for taking the time to write with your concerns
about using the America Online (AOL) software on the Linux, OS2, Unix, or BeOS
operating systems.

AOL for Linux, OS2, Unix, or BeOS is currently in research and development.

AOL Member Services is currently "collecting the data" on requests for AOL for
Linux, OS2, Unix, or BeOS and I assure you that your feelings and input are
being used to help AOL make the best possible online experience.

I am excited about any improvements to the service and will be able to answer
questions about AOL for Linux, OS2, Unix, or BeOS as soon as information and a
possible release date are available. "

Unfortunately, they missed my point of just using my AOL account as a dial-up
connection to the internet. I requested more info again, and am patiently
awaiting a reply.

I am also curious how they are "collecting the data" on requests, since I
haven't seen any surveys, as such. Perhaps if they are bombarded with requests
from Linux users it would happen sooner.

at the lilo prompt try
linux init=/bin/sh
the it boots linux and ends in a shell.
Now mount your filesystems and edit the /etc/profile.

hope that works.

This sounds very similar to me. I have the intel i810 though.

I got a list of sites that play music from a friend of mine (sorry but
I cant remember the web address). I can play the radio from these but not
mp3 for some reason. Maybe yuo shoudl try getting one of these
'radio-websites' and testing to see if they play.

>From what you say it sounds like your card/chip has been unmuted and so it
should play as it is recognising the chip when you run sndconfig.

Do 'cat /proc/modules' and see if it produces a file that is NOT empty. If
it is not empty then your sound should be ready to work. Just seems like
you have missed something simple. You can also see what modules you have
installed by doing 'lsmod' as root.

Sorry I cant be more help. I only got my thing to work after WEEKS of
trying.

Hi all,

I want to upgrade my gnumeric version (0.54 -> 0.57) so I downloaded the
source, decompressed it and dit './configure'. Error: libxml (aka gnome-xml)
libraries 1.8.5 <= version < 2.0.0 not found. So I download the libxml
version 1.8.9 and install that, no problem. Again ./configure the gnumeric
package: same error!

What's going on? How to solve it?

thanks!
