Immediately after a failed attempt to use pump, try issuing the
following commands:
/sbin/ifconfig eth0
/sbin/route -n
tail /var/log/messages
The first shows the status of eth0 (change this if you've got more than
one NIC and are using something other than eth0 for the cable modem
connection). If all is well, you'll see a status message and an IP
address (called "inet addr"). If you get nothing at all, it's probably a
matter of a driver for the Ethernet card not being loaded.
The second command shows the route that's set for the system. Assuming
you got an IP address when you tried ifconfig, it's possible that the
routing table is wrong. You should see a line along these lines in the
output:
0.0.0.0 192.168.45.1 0.0.0.0 UG 1 0 0 eth0
This shows the default route (the first 0.0.0.0) going through the
gateway system at 192.168.45.1 (yours will be a different number, of
course).
The third command should show you pump's status messages when it tried
to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server. There may be clues there
about what went wrong.

Peter,
Thanks for your suggestions. Unfortunately, I did not get a chance to
try them. I went back to run the application again and it worked! Has
ever since... I did absolutely nothing to fix the problem. The company
did make some changes to the network though... said there was internal
routing problems. (although it never affected any applications before)
Oh well...

Are you sure? I find that quite untenable. Here is my 1.7GB disk:
Disk /dev/hda: 16 heads, 63 sectors, 3390 cylinders

As you can see, each cylinder contains 16*63 = 1008 half kilobyte
sectors. That's 0.5M. I have 2.4K cylinders, so 1.7GB.
You have cylinders of 64*32 = 2048 half K sectors, or 1MB each.

Yes, it's clear. You set it up for an lba translation originally.
You can see that it originally was aimed at a cylinder boundary ending
near head 255, which is typical of a translation (255 heads is a
common translation).
: /dev/sda2 16 667 666697+ 7 HPFS/NTFS
: Partition 2 does not end on cylinder boundary:
: phys=(84, 254, 63) should be (84, 63, 32)

: /dev/sda7 * 6692 8708 2064321 7 HPFS/NTFS
OK. Just view this in sectors (type "u" in fdisk). Note down the
offsets. I think you should be fine if you just go into the bios
and set the translation to "lba". But you can also go straight
into expert mode in fdisk, tell it how many heads and sectors per
track you have (luckily the number of cylinders makes no difference),
wipe the table, and reenter all of the data, using the sector numbers.

Start up the Gnome Control Centre (on the main menu, click Programs, then
Settings to get to it. In the section for your window manager (if you're
running Sawmill or Sawfish, that is) click the Workspaces item. You can have
several workspaces and each can have a virtual desktop that is several physical
desktops wide and deep.
When you've configured your workspaces, click Shortcuts and you can define the
key presses you'll use to switch between them.

You didn't read the instructions carefully. In non-DOS systems, the
command shell will only run programs that are in a special listing
of directories called the "PATH", which does not include your current
directory on your system. If you typed
./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
and Enter, that might work. (The period "." means "this directory".)
You might have to use the chmod command to inform your system that
this is a program.
chmod u+x so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
(Both of the above commands would be easier to type if you knew about
completion, BTW.)

First thing to check... Are you putting a "./" in front of the command?
If you don't, it will just look in your path, which does not include ".".
Second thing... is the execution bit enabled on the file? Just to be
sure, do a "chmod +x <filename>". But I really think that the problem is
because you're just typing in the "filename", not "./filename".

How about Netscape/iPlanet? You have to purchase the Netscape Calender
server to set up your meeting, scheduling, etc for your group.
Another is HP OpenMail.

Reminds me of Windows...
On a whim, I installed KDE2 on my perfectly functional Debian 2.2/Gnome
system. Next thing I know, I could not successfully display .jpg
attachments from within mutt. Turns out that the KDE install had sprinkled
little k-this's and k-that's all over my /etc/mailcap. Never did it ask for
permission, or let me know what it was up to.
Who knows what else the KDE install did. Really - if I want a system that
thinks that it knows more about what I want than I do, I'll go back to
Windows.

You need to prefix it with ./ since the current directory isn't (and shouldn't
be) on your PATH. So enter:
./so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin
You might need to do a 'chmod u+x so-5_2-ga-bin-linux-en.bin' first in order to
make it executable.

You're doing this software for X windows right? The particular widget
set you happen to choose should make a whole lot of difference to the
functionality of the software.
With regard point 1, the gcc compiler will work regardless of the window
manager you use. C++ is always object oriented. The only time the
window manager may come into play is when you develop th UI.

I had a 8330 working for ages sorry I didn't see this earlier to help. If
you have windozer look under the device properties and note the setting
under MSS MicroSuck Sound and write them down. When you reboot into Linux as
Root .You can run "/usr/sbin/sndconfig" as root without shutting down the
computer and enter in only that recorded data. Disable everything else. You
will be up and running.
