Thank you for your prompt reply. I have reboot the computer and did a
ifconfig eth0, it returned with the info for the loopback. I then
typed pump -h mother and it failed. I then typed ifconfig again and
it returned with eth0 information but lacking IP address. I can tell
you that it transmitted 28 packets and didn't receive any.

I did type route -n and only got back the desitnation 127.0.0.0.

When I type dmesg, I see that the tulip driver is loaded and then
information on eth0 the two lines report:
eth0: Lite-On 82c168 PNIC rev 32 at 0x8c00, 00:A0:CC:62:5B:7D
eth0: MII transceiver #1 config 3000 status 7829 advertising 01e1

Any other insight would be appreciated.

Subject: Where to place IDE tape drive?

I have two PC's connected via Ethernet,
a Win98 box and a RedHat 6.2 box. I'd like
to back up both of them with an IDE tape drive.

Of course, I don't want to have to get two tape
drives. Using Samba, I think I can mount the volumes
from one machine on the other, and backup both
machines with a single drive.

Samba will let me do the mounting in either direction.
I can Linux drives visible on the Win98 box, or
vice-versa (at least this is what I'm told).

So is there any reason to prefer having the tape drive
on one machine vs. the other?

A conjecture: The backup software for Windows may
be easier to use, hence it might be nicer to have the
drive there. Also, installation on Windows may be
more straightforward.

Any help on this appreciated.

Or, if you want to reset the console text mode on the fly without rebooting,
install the svgatextmode package that's probably included with your
distribution.

Clarify what you mean, please. Do you wish to overwrite all unused
space in a filesystem with zeroes or random data, so no one can
"undelete" anything? If so, you can use a quick hack like the ones
below, or look into various "secure deletion" programs/options on
freshmeat.net :
  dd if=/dev/urandom of=/mountpoint/bigfile bs=8192 && rm
/mountpoint/bigfile
(repeat that a couple of times for better security, replacing
"mountpoint" with the mount point of the filesystem you wish to remove
deleted files from.)

Keep in mind that undeleting files under Linux is quite a bit more
complex than undeleting files in WinXX, MacOS, and some Netware
setups. True undeletion generally requires access to the raw disk,
which normal users should never have in most cases.

If you wish to "defrag" a Linux filesystem, you don't need to. ext2
filesystems do fragment, but Linux is built to handle this fragmentation
efficiently through aggressive disk caching. HTH,

I have an expression of s/something/\0/, which essentially repeats exactly
what it found. Is it possible to make the \0 entirely in lowercase? (in
other words, match a pattern, and replace it with an all-lowercase version
of itself)

I thought of doing something like

$ sed "s/something/`tr A-Z a-z \0`/" file

however, it apparently does not substitute the \0 into the tr command.

Any help?

This morning, I found the following error message on my console

sym53c810a-1:3: ERROR (0:18) (1-21-ff) (8/13) @ (script

st09:00: sense key Unit Attention
Additional sense indicates Power on, reset, or bus device reset

I have two questions about this.

1.) I do not normally leave console #1 logged in, so normally,
I would never have seen this message. There is nothing like
this in /var/log/messages where I would normally expect to find
it. Is there a way to make this appear there? I assume it is
the driver for the sym53c810a, the narrow SCSI controller that
has only my DDS-2 tape drive on it.

2.) Does anyone know how to interpret what this message means?
I do know that it was doing a verification of a backup it had
just made from disk to tape, and got a read error on the
device. It seems to have been totally unrecoverable and all the
blocks after the one with the read error had incorrect
checksums. Yet I had no trouble re-running the backup job
correctly (with the same, fairly new, tape).

I had this problem once before, and someone advised me that the
tape drive, less than about 6 months old, was failing. My
vendor replaced the drive, and I get the same thing on the new
one that I just installed August 8. Tape Drive is HP C1599A
DDS-2 SCSI DAT Drive.

You can use mc (midnight commander). it will read *.deb (or rpm, tar,

to add '-detach' to my /etc/ppp/options file and
'pd:23:respawn:/usr/sbin/pppd' to /etc/inittab. I put the line in
inittab at the very bottom after everything else.

When I boot up my machine, instead of a loging prompt I get all kinds of
charactors printed to the screen. It prints out a partial line then
pauses, prints out more charactors then pauses.

Anyone know why the charactors are getting printed to the screen, or any

GTK+ absolutely _IS_ object-oriented.

The notion that the use of OO is restricted to C++ is just silly;
indeed, the fact that C++ doesn't provide GC by default is considered
by many to be an strike against _C++_ being a particularly capable OO
language. (The same strike is true for C, of course...)

Glade isn't an IDE, and is utterly non-comparable in functionality to
KDevelop:

 - Glade is a tool to allow you to "drag'n'drool" graphical objects
onto canvases, thereby building the GUI with lessened effort.
Compare to QtEz for Qt, or to FLUID for FLTK.

Glade isn't universally usable for _everything_; it doesn't have a
good mechanism for having complex repeated object groupings as you
might have with an accounting system "register" (see GnuCash).

On the other hand, Glade has the merit that it generates output in
XML form, and there is a corresponding "libglade" that can _read_
GUI definitions in at runtime. That means that you can create
dynamic applications where the GUI gets connected in afterwards
rather than having to define it statically at compile time.

If the plan is to do "serious C++ work," and to make use of OpenGL,
then it may well be worth taking a Serious Look at FLTK. Notable
   relevant properties:
-> Like Qt, it "prefers C++."
-> Like GTK, it uses the LGPL, thus making it freely usable for
both commercial and free applications. (Free Qt is GPLed, thus
meaning that to use it for commercial (no source) apps, you have
to buy a license from Troll Tech).
-> Does not use C++ macros, templates, exceptions, or multiple
      inheritance
-> Allows you to set up OpenGL windows
-> Includes a GUI builder, FLUID, which generates C++ output.
   <http://www.fltk.org/>

 - KDevelop is a "code manager" descended in concept from Borland's
"Turbo Pascal" IDE; there are various others, such as XWPE, RHIDE,
Code Crusader, Source Navigator, and such.

Alternatively, you can use "ar" (the GNU Binutils "archiver") to take
a look at what's in a .deb file:
% ar t xli_1.17.0.2_i386.deb
debian-binary
control.tar.gz
data.tar.gz
% ar x xli_1.17.0.2_i386.deb
% ls -l
total 137
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 1214 Nov 5 23:02 control.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 135806 Nov 5 23:02 data.tar.gz
-rw-r--r-- 1 root root 4 Nov 5 23:02 debian-binary

data.tar.gz contains, via "tar tfvz data.tar.gz"

I have NO idea whether this is what you want or not, but you may want to
look at edb (e_db), from the Enlightenment team. It's a database thing for
storing / caching mainly graphical-type info, but I do remember them saying
that it is quite capable of storing anything you want. May be just what
you're looking for. Or not. Anyway check it out...
www.enlightenment.org - go to the news section. edb is at the top.

---
from the Enlightenment site...
Edb is intended to provide a stable API and file format for archiving
configuration, theme and other data available all the time for access at
random really fast. Edb can store any kind of data in key-value pair format.
Random access reading and writing is FAST as the core of Edb used a berkley
db. Edb provides a convenience API designed to make access fast AND improves
access speed by caching open db's until a flush and providing conveience
macros too. It also will be used to store image data and geometry data for
theme files so the information can be accessed without needing to unarchive
files and can be edited without having to unarchive and re-archive, and
still be accesses at random really quickly. Documentation is provided as
comments in the Edb.h header file.
