Cdrom (/mnt/cdrom --> /dev/hdc) no longer allows mount :-(

Error message is:
"Drivemount command failed.
mount wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock on dev/cdrom,
or too many mounted filesystems.
(aren't you trying to mount an extended partition,
instead of some logical partition inside?)"

Error message the same when attempting cdrom mount from
command line or from X.

All worked fine and then suddenly kablooie! <g>
I rather suspect I forgot to umount as usr then remounted as root
or some such. My brain seems to be defective. I tried fsck in
various ways after reading its man page and I followed its prompts
as well (from command line). Fsck seems to think I have a
superblock problem. I confess to complete ignorance. What is a
superblock, or where can I read up on it?

System is:
PII 433 with 64MB SDRAM
6 GB hd which dual boots via LILO to 2GB Win95 FAT32 and 4GB Linux
Linux portion is divided into swap of 128MB, boot of 16MB and remainder to /
Linux = RedHat 7
Gnome with sawfish wm
XFree86 4.0.1

Urls, suggestions, or whatever appreciated.
I just did something stupid as usual, I am sure.
My proper e-mail is [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Hi Jon:

What command are you attempting to use?

Here is what I do;

First add a line to your /etc/fstab (fstab is Linux for File System TABle);

/dev/hdc /cdrom iso9660 noauto,ro 0 0

Now you should be able to mount your CD rom like this;

mount /cdrom <enter>

You will not be able to open your CD drive door until you unmount the CD
rom;

umount /cdrom <enter>
^ (not a typo)

Try not to change posting names too often; It gets confusing.

Brian

Try using a virtual screen of say "1024 768" or larger.

You will have to edit your /etc/XF86Config file. Look for EVERY instance of;

Section "Screen"

and add the following directive;

Section "Screen"
    Driver "accel"
    Device "Matrox Mystique"
    Monitor "My Monitor"
    DefaultColorDepth 16
    Subsection "Display"

        Modes "800x600"
        Virtual 1024 768
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 16
        Modes "800x600"
        Virtual 1024 768
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 24
        Modes "800x600"
        Virtual 1024 768

    EndSubsection
    Subsection "Display"
        Depth 32
        Modes "800x600"
        Virtual 1024 768
        ViewPort 0 0
    EndSubsection
EndSection

Your mileage may vary.

Subject: Capitalization problem! Is there a workaround?
Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 13:56:20 GMT

I am bilingual. To get the specific characters working, I choose my
second language as language and keyboard options during the
installation of Mandrake 7.2. At first everything seemed OK.

I am having problems with some of the programs such as wine and
ncpmount. When I try to debug the problems, I see wrong capitalization
behind the scenes. The system converts the small letters to capital
ones using the second language codepage. For example I have
"c:/windows" in wine.conf. Wine capitalizes this as WNDOWS. Although
() is correct capital of (i) in iso8859-9, it is wrong from
programming point of view.

If I opt to install it as english only, I can't get iso8859-9 working
at all later on. The specific characters just don't print on the screen.

In short: Is there a way to tell Linux to use iso8859 (english
codepage) for all internal capitalizations instead of iso8859-9?

Sorry, for this long message. Any help would be highly appreciated.
Thanks,

Mufit

I currently have Red Hat 6.1 (kernel version 2.2.12). I know I can
upgrade my kernel to 2.2.17 and backport the USB stuff from 2.4 but I
don't want to go to the trouble if my modem isn't going to work

I tried looking at the compatibility list at the USB Linux site but

Mmmm.. I dont know if this will help.
Sounds to me like 'sendmail" has an identity crisis, from what you have
described it sounds like your gateway doesnt know it's own name (from
sendmail's perspective !).
You could try and see what the output is from the following command:

echo '$=w' | sendmail -bt -d0.4

Is your gateway host in the list there somewhere ?
It may be that sendmail cannot resolve the name properly.
You might be able to cure this by using aliases in /etc/hosts.

Hope this helps and doesnt obsfucate !

Cliff

p.s. sendmail.org have a great email address for asking complex sendmail
questions, search around for it !

Subject: Contributors requested: vectorizing free charts useable for any application
Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 14:44:36 GMT
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The general purpose is to build a free database available to anyone
interested in writing software using VECTORIZED
geographical maps. I did so myself for Western Europe and will explain
later what and how I did. Those data can then be used
for numerous applications including geographical, games, navigation,
weather forecast, GPS and so on...

The database will consist of the ORDERED GEOGRAPHICAL POSITIONS around
all the countries and islands in the world.
The charts so described in ASCII could be used as a background in any
application written in any language under
Microsoft Windows or Linux.

Using ordered geographical coordinates we make one file for each
closed surface (either a country, an island, or a state).
Each file then consists of a list of latitudes and longitudes that can
be linked as a chain of vectors closing on itself.

This is an example for the Isle of Wight in Great Britain ( longitudes
west of Greenwhich are positive here) :

The full file gives 2765 positions. Of course the data is optimized in
binary according to the application and sort
of pre-compiled to eliminate useless vectors.

It enables then the user to zoom in and out on the maps.

I APPEAL TO ANYONE WILLING TO CONTRIBUTE FREELY AND FOR NON COMMERCIAL
PURPOSES.

We could make a site from which all data could be downloaded.

There are several solutions :

- You have your own idea about building those lists. All right.

- You are interested but don't know how to do :

I have written software in C++ ( for Windows , I am only a beginner in
KDE linux) that enables one to vectorize scanned MERCATOR maps (that
is with perpendicular parallels and meridians) . I keep the source
code for anyone interested . For the time being it is written in
French but I can translate it if you are really interested.
Anyway you can use the exe file easily : you just call the bitmap in
the window , click on two judiciously chosen positions, enter the
matching coordinates and save under the chosen name. (*.VCA for
vectorized chart in ASCII).

I have also written software to adjust the charts one with the other
and to correct segments, that is to say improving the definition of
parts of already built lists.

Also, a precompiler for Delphi applications has been developped.

You will find applications ( in particular a universal tide calculator
but unfortunately only written in French ) using these kinds of charts
on my site :

As a starting point you will find the database for Western Europe (but
part of it is rather rough) in this file :
http://jptrol.free.fr/geo_charts/ref_vca.zip ( warranted without any
virus by Norton).

All those interested are invited to contact me here :

Please enter 'geocharts' as subject.

Thank you

Subject: Any experience with i840-chipset motherboards?
Date: Sun, 12 Nov 2000 23:21:58 +0900

What motherboards with the i840 chipset are available in the market?
Any recommenation?

Will I be better off with Rambus rams or SDRams?
It appears that Supermicro makes different versions
taking different RAMs.

I am considering a Linux server doing SMP.
Has anyone booted SMP Linux on one of those motherboards?

Most boards with i840 have an on-board SCSI based on
Adaptec's AIC-789x.
I had a terrible time with the AIC-789x SCSI chips
on the Compaq's Alpha board because the Linux driver (v5.1.28)
for the chip was buggy. Is it still true?

Thanks.
