I believe I have an answer. I had this problem trying to get different
distributions of Linux to connect to Prodigy Internet. I was getting
ppd errors like these but after I supplied 'NOAUTH' to the list of
variables, everything was find ever since. Got that info from a prodigy
rep. Of course, you still have to put in your account info and DNS
crap. I believed I used KPPP.

If you like to search...goto www.prodigy.net and do a search for Linux.
One of the members made a webpage for this purpose. Hope it helps

Is there more than one mc? On my machine, it claims to be midnight commander, a
shell. Can such a shell undelete files unless, perhaps, you were running it when
you did the delete and it hid it somewhere?

One way would be to create your own version of 'rm' which cycles files
into some other directory (junk, for instance) - and then have a cron job
which periodically cleans out that directory.

If you need to 'undelete', simply go to that directory and get it.

You will need to provide encrypted password authentication.

In your smb.conf, add the lines:

    [global]
    encrypt passwords = yes
    smb passwd file = /etc/samba/smbpasswd

Replace /etc/samba/smbpasswd with an appropriate location.
Create this file, with mode 600 (read-write by root, noone else).

Add the your username to the smbpasswd file:

    # smbpasswd -a username

If your UNIX username is different from your Windows one, you need to
have a "username map" specified. See "man smb.conf" for details.

In general, RTFM.

Hi Jim,

I just started using Linux a few months ago...Red Hat 6.1. Installation
of
the basic operating system was straightforward and went smoothly, but I
have
had some trouble getting my peripherals to work (sound, zip - probably
due
to my "newbie" status). I've read that Corel Linux has a highly
user-friendly installation interface. CNet.com did a review of all the
major
Linux distributions earlier this year, and Corel got the highest marks
on
ease of installation. You might want to check that review out before you
make your decision. Also check out the hardware compatibility lists of
each
distribution and make sure that your hardware (esp. your video chipset)
is
compatible.

Good Luck,

Paul

This is a massive guess but take a look at your X initialization
script (usually $HOME/.Xclients of $HOME/.xinitrc). All of the
commands in this file should have ' &' after them except the last one.

I just tried his example, and it worked for me. I don't know if it makes
any difference or not, but what shell are you running? I'm running bash.
Another possibility would be to use this:
i=$(whoami)
which also works under bash.

i had this very problem with ns6pr3. it seems that you must run it
once as root (or at least with the appropriate permissions for the

Or, better yet, get x11amp from the same place.
And finally, the best, get xmms.

I'm recompiling the 2.2.12 kernel to enable support for a
parallel port printer. Unfortunately, this breaks everything
that's compiled as a modules.

My sequence of commands is

cd /usr/src/linux
make xconfig
make dep
make clean
make modules
make modules_install
make bzdisk
depmod -a

This is where dozens of .o files are reported as having unresolved symbol(s).
I can boot from the new kernel on disk, but nothing that was compiled as
a module works.

I tried doing

make modules
make modules_install

after the make bzdisk, but that didn't change anything.

Neither the Kernal HOWTO, the Modules mini-HOWTO, the O'Reilly
_Linux Network Administartors Guide_ address this problem.

I'm using the Red Hat 6.1 distribution on an HP Visualize Workstation.

I know it is ridculous, the the absolute best way to run this netscape 6
is to install it in your /home/ directory somewhere. Some people may
criticize me for suggesting this, but I don't think that they understand
how badly they fouled up with personal security manager when it comes to
Linux security. I did it and I have no problems, so that is my advice,

I had a similar problem when I upgraded to 2.4.0test9 (it worked through
the earlier test builds). This was with Slack 7.0. If it is giving you an
error when you run 'make modules_install' (I didn't catch it the first
time, because it just keeps installing, rather than exiting with an
error), you probably need to upgrade to a new version of modutils. The
reason that modprobe can't find anything is that the modules.dep was not
generated when you installed the modules. It now uses some flags The
information on where to get it and which version to get is in the
'CHANGES' file included with the kernel documentation.

Hard to say. But if were my property, I don't care what there are called.

If you have logs of the probes (don't waste their time if not) and any other
evidence of intrusion/tampering, the addy for Bell South from that Sam Spade
(http://samspade.org/t/) listing I found is

        Coordinator:
           Geurin, Joe (JG726-ARIN) [EMAIL PROTECTED]
           678-441-7800 (FAX) 678-441-6968

It may not be the direct route but they should forward info if needed.

This does *NOT* include the ShieldsUp probes, which are (AFAIK) harmless and
voluntary requests to determine the relative security of a network node.

Bud, your problem is Redhat, NOT KDE 2.0. Redhat 7.0 has a Beta version
of egcs/gcc on it, check out http://gcc.gnu.org/ and Redhat's home page
for more info, there is a work around. Your problem is the fact that
ALL Redhat x.0 releases are bleeding edge. NOTHING works right on
them. I played this game with 4.0, 5.0, and 6.0. If you want a stable
box, either go with a distro that emphasises stability (I am a diehard
Slackware devotee)at the expense of not having the most up to date
kernel (among other things) shipped with it, or go back to Redhat 6.2,
install all the errata RPM's, update all the packages required for KDE,
then give it another shot. I would choose Slackware. I compiled QT
2.2.1 from Trolltech, and compiled all the source tar balls from
kde.org, not a single issue. Or, if it's kicking your ass to hard, try
Gnome, it's also quite nice, though you will probably have many of the
same issues.

Subject: Help with Castlewood ORB and Linksys Etherfast 10/100 NIC
Date: Mon, 20 Nov 2000 20:01:46 -0500

I am building a 600 MHz Duron machine and I have purchased an IDE Castlewood
ORB drive. Does anyone know how to get it working in Linux? In addition, I
have an old PC that I want to convert to Linux, but it wont recognize the
Linksys Etherfast 10/100 NIC that I have installed. I have tried to
initialize it with the tulip driver but it fails everytime. I am trying to
install Linux Mandrake 7.2.

Thanks

Interesting...

I'm getting really crappy performance under Linux out of my
Linksys pcmcia netcard. I wonder if it's a bug in current
versions of pcmcia-cs? Is anybody else having similar
performance problems?
