Sak,
I don't think it is a php problem.
First have you tried just installing the rpms for php4 from the redhat
site or the upgrade site( say
fr.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/redhat/7.0/updates.
You could also get the src rpms and build them on your machines. I know
they contain redhat-specific patches.
I have had no problem building php on RH7. My guess is that somehow
you're glibc upgrades got botched. First did you run ldconfig after
upgrading; that might help.
The symbol you're looking for "__ns_name_unpack" occurs in several
libraries, for example
libresolv.so.2,libnss_dns.so
On this RH7 box, which I update all the time
if I do
#rpm -qf /usr/lib/libnss_dns.so
glibc-devel-2.2-12
#nm /usr/lib/libnss_dns.so|grep __ns_name_unpack
U __ns_name_unpack@@GLIBC_2.1
You can also try using "objdump -T" on some of these libs as well.
Just to get you started.

Hello,
Mizi Research, Inc. is a Linux company located in Seoul, South Korea. We've developed
a Linux distribution called "MIZI Linux" since 1998. We proudly says "It's a true
Desktop Linux." The last version is 1.5 and it has been expanding the market share in
domestic Desktop OS market, mostly dominated by Microsoft Windows though.
Now, we are working hard to release MIZI Linux 2.0 soon and looking for a Linux author
who will write a guide book based on this product. Briefly say, it would be an user
guide book and introduction about Linux to the end user.
The contact condition is very open and we believe this opportunity gives good effect
both of us, more than money. An experienced author who wrote a book about Linux guide
or Desktop Linux is welcomed. Well, a person who has writing skills will be accepted.

Well, what does the bios look for on the cd when 'boot from cd' is
enabled and 'atapi cdrom found' is issued? Is there a separate small
image of some sort that provides a root image and maybe atapi cdrom
drivers for immediate use by the otherwise bare system?

Subject: Lilo with RH 7.0 Won't Enter Linux Automatically Anymore
Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 19:05:01 +0200
I installed RH7.0 a few months ago (it's the only OS on the machine).
Up until last week, when I booted the computer, the Lilo would display
"LINUX" (together with a picture of the man in the Red Hat in the corner),
and then I could either press ENTER immediately if I was inpatient, or could
just wait a few seconds and by default Linux would then boot.
Without warning, Linux is no longer brought up by default after a few
seconds. I now am forced to manually press ENTER. This is a problem for me
as Linux is my gateway, and we have power problems frequently - so I want to
be sure that my gateway will automatically come up if I;m not around to
press ENTER.
Any ideas?
TIA,

I've replaced the power supply, and the system appears to be working,
but we have to give it some more time to see if a problem develops.
The power supply had what was called a "smart fan" which was
supposed to come on just when needed. But it is possible its
setting changed due to overheating from a dirty fan, and it was
allowing the power supply to overheat.

s/512/1024/g
That's with GNU fileutils 4.0l. Info says:
[ ... ]
`-l'
`--format=long'
`--format=verbose'
[ ... ]
For each directory that is listed, preface the files with a line
`total BLOCKS', where BLOCKS is the total disk allocation for all
files in that directory. The block size currently defaults to 1024
bytes, but this can be overridden

Sure. take out the debug option to pppd in /etc/ppp/options.
If you want to hack the code , good luck.
(Alternatively tell pppd to stop sending the echo requests. They are

Hello,
I have a multi-session cd-rom. By reading the readme.txt file in the

and the audio is in the second session.
I've tried xcdroast to pull the session(s) off the cd, but that doesn't

What other methods can I use? I've been reading how-tos, and I haven't
found anything yet.

Well for one, Linux will use memory to cache recently used code until it
needs memory. Then it will either swap or free memory as needed. I have
640 MB physical memory and most of the time stays somewhere close to
what is shown below:
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:

The classic reference is:
Maurice C. Bach, The Design of the UNIX Operating System, Prentice-Hall,
ISBN 0-13-201757-1 (the ISBN may be for an obsolete printing, mine)
A good reference for Linux is:
Daniel P. Bovet & Marco Cesati, Understanding the Linux Kernel, O'Reilly,
ISBN 0-596-00002-2 (this is brand new)
For a Unix-like system that is less complicated than full Unix or Linux, a
good book is:
Andrew S. Tanenbaum, Operating Systems, Design and Implementation,
Prentice-Hall, ISBN 0-13-637331-3 (again, the ISBN may be for an obsolete
printing).
This book describes Minix, an Unix-like system which is simple enough for a
newcomer to the kernel world. There are full source listings included.

They are called kernel threads. They are separate threads of execution, like
processes and they are scheduled like processes. They are running in the
kernel address space instead of their own, like full processes do.
kswapd takes care of throwing out such pages that are seen most appropriate
if the real memory begins to get low. There is no reason why it could not be
thrown out itself: it is not needed nor used for page-in.

This is usually reported by incorrect / conflicting I/O addresses or
interrupt requests. Check /proc/ioports and /proc/interrupts.
You may be missing the parallel port driver pc_parport.o or equivalent.
Also, broken hardware prevents the hardware probe in installation with
similar results. A better response might be 'Hardware not responding
properly'.

Sorry, my Norwegian is so bad Scandinavish, so I'll use English.
First of all, you have to have TCP/IP running between the boxes: both boxes
should be able to ping each other.
Install Samba on the Red Hat box. Check that the NT box can accept SMB on
TCP/IP.
Another possibility is to install the lpd daemon on NT (it is in the server
set, though Microsoft is pretty good at hiding it). Use printtool to install
the client part for LJ4 in the Red Hat box.

Yes, but if his memory useage is about a Gigabyte, where is it if the
sum of real memory and swap is only about 1/4 gigabyte? My memory used
never has exceeded tha amount of real memory I have, and according to
you, that is the case for your machine as well. Viz.:
total: used: free: shared: buffers: cached:
Mem: 529072128 384909312 144162816 62558208 46260224 242049024
Swap: 279642112 22069248 257572864
MemTotal: 516672 kB
MemFree: 140784 kB
MemShared: 61092 kB
Buffers: 45176 kB
Cached: 236376 kB
BigTotal: 0 kB
BigFree: 0 kB
SwapTotal: 273088 kB
SwapFree: 251536 kB
What does the O.P. mean by " my total memory usage is 1,037,520K"? Did
he add up the used, free, shared, biuffers, and cached? Otherwise, I
do not see how the amount of memory used exceeds the memory total.

If anybody knows of a working and free X-server for NT (or even W95/98),
tell us! AFAIK, there are none.

The BIOS exchanges the diskette control for the diskette image on the CD-ROM
for the duration of the boot. For details, point your favourite search
engine to 'El Torito' specification.
The diskette image should contain a kernel with the necessary support to run
with the necessary peripherals after boot. There is a possibility to include
device driver modules, see the Bootdisk-HOWTO.
