hi!
do I have to adjust my routing tables, even if the network I want to set up
only consists of two workstations (one linux, one freebsd)? or will changes
in rc.conf and /etc/hosts alone do the trick?
i just want to connect these two machines with each other, there are no
gateways, nothing, just 2 unix boxes with static addresses (192.168.1.1 and
2). what is required? the ethernet cards were detetced and configured
without a problem.

You can read the documentation for pppd.
However, setup time with ISDN should be extremely short, and
hence allowing it to time out when not in use should not even be
noticable. 30 seconds is a bit short, but as little as a couple
of minutes might not be.

Hi!
I found a while ago something like this (see below the README
file). Unfortunately I don't remember the www site but I'm sure you can
look for it on one of the major linux program sites.
readvcd version 0.2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What is readvcd?
================
It's a program for reading of the MPEG streams from VideoCD. It uses
the special ioctl call CDROMREADRAW that has to be compiled into Linux
kernel. Now it works with 2.x.x and 1.3.x kernels with IDE CD-ROM drives.
I hope it will work soon with SCSI too...
Several people has successfully tested the previous version and played
the MPEGs. It works well with Tristan Savatier's MpegTV.
Instalation:
============
In two steps.
1. kernel patch (in 2.1.18+ it's already done)
You must add the CDROMREADRAW ioctl into kernel. And recompile it.
Look at the file kernel-patch for changes in the file ide-cd.c and
try to copy them to you kernel.
2. readvcd
Run make. If you don't have ncurses you can disable it in the Makefile.
Usage:
======
The program sends the MPEGs to stdout so it's more than likely that you
will pipe it to some MPEG player or you write it to the file.
It should now find the beginning of the MPEG stream and start to play it.
If you turn on the verbose mode it will also display TOC informations and
position where it plays.
If you compile it with ncurses (default) you will be able to skip forward
and backward by pressing 'B' and 'F' keys ('b' and 'f' will make smaller
jump). If you press 'space' it will display MSF address of the actual sector.
After pressing 'q' it will terminate.
You can chose which track should be played. Usually the 1st track holds
some kind of info and copyright informations. The 2nd (and following)
are the MPEG streams to be played. You can also start at any sector
on disk with -a option. It's useful when you want to continue after the
interruption. You only have to know the latest MSF address.
Options:
========
-v verbose mode
-a M:S.F address of the starting sector in MSF format
Examples:
=========
readvcd -v -a 00:50.00 | mtv -
It will turn on verbose mode and it will read from sector 00:50.00 and pipe
data into mtv.
readvcd 2 > track2.mpg
It should write data from track 2 into file.
License:
========
This program is free. You are using it at you own risk. You can use it for
your personal use only. It can be redistributed only in the original form.
You need a kernel with ntfs-support enabled. But use it read-only,
the writesupport is experimentel (buggy).
My keyboard is Chicony KB-8993 and no, the multimedia keys are not
'active' they DO NOT generate any scancodes (showkey -s)! This is my
problem!
Once I can 'convince' the keyboard to generate scancodes I have a kernel
patch which can map them to different actions (based on the Rapid Access
Keyboard demon built for a similar IBM keyboard, www.surmount.com).
It all looks like the controller _in_ the keyboard (Chicony 6868A) needs a
special initialization sequence. I might be wrong here. This is of course
implemented for Windoz but I was wondering if somebody already did figure
out the Linux implementation.
Thanks for the input ayway!
Well, here's what I did it get the machine to work.
1. I lowered the cpu mhz from 233 to 200.
Not quite the same problem as with card services 3.1.16 which
ships with Slack 7.1. (Current is 3.1.20). Loading card services from
Slack 7.1 on a Thinkpad 701C, for example, produces a kernel panic and
hangs everything. Versions of card services from Slack 7.0 (3.1.14) and
earlier are fine on the 701C. Haven't tried the currentmost 3.1.20 version
of cs on this older machine yet to see if the problem persists beyond
3.1.16 --since it works now, why screw around with it?
Subject: alsa and enlightenment, 2 separate questions
hi,
first, does alsa 5.10 work under kernel 2.4? I had alsa 5.9d working
under the 2.2.13 kernel that came with suse 6.3 but recently i
downlaoded and compiled a 2.4 kernel and when the new alsa version came
out i downloaded it, b/c my current driver for my chipset had bugs in it
and was hoping this new version fixed the bugs, and when i tried
compiling the drivers for the new kernel i got a lot of errors.
Some things I was able to fix but even booting with the old kernel and
telling the configure script for alsa to use the 2.2.13 directories i
still got errors. There are too many errors to list but it seemed to me
that with the new kernel headers some things are defined differently
possibly and b/c of that the alsa code didn't compile right.
To fix some of the errors I copied over some of the headers i got errors
about from the /include/asm/ directory and /include/linux directory of
the original source code to the corresponding directories for kernel
2.4. Did i not copy the headers to the right directory or something for
2.4 correctly or maybe I didnt notify alsa in enough places that i'm
using kernel 2.4?
if more info is needed just let me know. i'm guessing the actual error
messages are needed but i hope they aren't. If they are i can supply
them, but it will be a pain getting them.(not on this computer)
second question is that I started using enlightenment today and i love
it. Faster and better looking than KDE however I want to make shortcuts
to some apps like GTKYahoo and AxyFTP. I made the links easily in KDE
but can't find the option to do so in E. IS it possible and if so how?
Maybe I missed the option in the menus.
thanks
Alex,
Undeletion is possible, but at the moment, I think the only tool which can
be used to do it is in Dan Farmer and Wietse Venema's TCL suit. I haven't
tried it out yet. You can do it manually, you will have to open the
filesystem
for write permissions, go through the list of deleted inodes and retrieve
the
inodes you are looking for.
Depending on how long its been deleted and such, you might not be able to
retrieve it because ext2 has the habit of trying to reuse the same old inode
numbers whenever it has the chance, at least it did the last time I fiddled
with
undeletion 2.0 kernel. If you've installed the full HOWTOs and such, try
looking
in /usr/doc/HOWTO/mini/ or thereabouts, I think there is a document called
Undeletion-Ext2 or something to that effect.
I can't recommend it because it's a beta, and sometimes locks up on
Maybe you did not mount it properly.
Format /dev/fd0 with mkdosfs or on a DOS/Win box and mount it with:
mount -t vfat /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
However, Unix text ends lines with just a linefeed and DOS/Win uses
carriage return, linefeed pairs, so they would not look right in Notepad.
Following is a Perl script that could convert the text:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
# txtconv - convert text to or from other OS
# Symlink or rename to: tounix, todos, tomac
# follow with list of files on commandline
while(@ARGV) {
my $file = shift @ARGV;
