Subject: Linux port forwarding of Oracle traffic.
Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 17:13:42 -0500
Hello,
Has anyone successfully used port forwarding on Linux to access
an Oracle RDBMS? I seem to be able to port forward HTTP, FTP
and Telnet with no trouble at all. But when I try to access the Oracle
DB I get connection errors. I'm forwarding the basic Oracle ports of
1521, 1523, 1526, 1575, etc. Does Oracle use any special protocols
that MASQ and/or port forwarding are unable to handle?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Subject: Where are the terminal TYPES set in Linux?
Date: Sun, 10 Dec 2000 22:44:35 GMT
I was wondering where the terminal types get set in Linux so that when you
log into a terminal it will be set to what you want it. In SCO Openserver,
they are contained in /etc/ttytype in the following format:
ansi tty01 ( default setting for main console - virtual terminal 1 )
wy60 tty1a ( this allows COM port 1 to be set to connect to a Wyse-60 dummy
terminal )
In Linux I see that there is a 'man' for ttytype, so I created the
'ttytype' file from scratch it in the /etc directory with the following
entry:
linux-m tty5
where "linux-m" is supposed to be the standard linux terminal type but
without color. But then when I log into screen 5 and do an echo $TERM, it
still says that it is only 'linux'... (the default).
So, where should I set this?
I even modified /etc/inittab to use 'getty' (and invoked 'init q' to
activate the changes) instead of the default 'mingetty' thinking that this
was the problem. But it is still not picking up the ttytype of 'linux-m'
for that virtual terminal.
What should I do?
Thanks,
Scott Navarre

This is a great problem for many programs and programmers alike.
Misleading or missing error messages. Often a business pays its people
to get a working app out the door, and the company doesn't support
programmers taking the time to add good error messages...on the
assumption that "it works, so we don't need to waste money supporting
such and such". I suppose once a company writes a module for testing if
items like cookies and javascript are enabled, it could easily be used
on other projects. So it would save them customer support time and
require writing it only once.

God that's easy. Have a network card installed in your machine.
Hook a cable between it and the cable modem.
Install Mandrake.
Say yes to I want DHCP!
And your working!
Hope this helps.

It might be something a little simpler... Do you have windows installed? If
so do you get audio from the card under Windows?
The first thing to do is make sure that you have your bttv card properly
connected to your sound card. Next, start up some audio mixer and make sure
that the line in or cd channel (depending on which one is the line from the
bttv card) isn't set down low or muted.
For me, the bttv kernel module loads all other necessary modules for audio and
video on my system. This is what I currently have loaded:
tuner 3248 1 (autoclean)
tvaudio 7776 0 (autoclean) (unused)
msp3400 13168 1 (autoclean)
bttv 54672 0 (unused)
i2c-algo-bit 7168 1 [bttv]
i2c-core 12016 0 [tuner tvaudio msp3400 bttv i2c-algo-bit]

Don't connect anything other than a disk to a Smart Array controller unless
you like spending money!

Subject: Broken CD in "Slakware Linux Unleashed" book (Dec. 1999 edition).

Hello.
I live in Spain and some time ago I found in a bookstore the book
"Slackware Linux Unleashed" (ISBN: 0-672-31768-0), first printing
December 1999. I bought it because it was imported from USA and
therefore it was not a Spanish-translated version (translations of
computer related books are generally not good, in my experience).
Well, this book came with a CD-ROM with Slakware Linux 7.0. The other
day I tried to install it but I got several errors about files in CD-ROM
not been complete, abortion of installation of several packages for
disk-set A because of missing files, and so on. It seemed to me to be a
broken CD (not physically, but logically) so I got the potato Debian
distribution from a friend and installed it perfectly.
Although I am already getting used to the Debian way and liking it, I
wonder whether is this a known problem with this "Unleashed" book/CD
set, or what? Anybody knows anything about it?
I am not likely to ask the editors for a new CD-ROM, as I am now happy
with Debian, but I just want to know: is it just me this problem?
Thanks.
(PS: Follow-up set to alt.os.linux.slackware.)

Will it not run, or are you getting error messages from the shell when you
try to run it?
If it is the former, you most likely need to give the file executable
permissions using chmod.
As far as errors it might generate, I am not familiar with the syntax you
are using here:
count=`exp ^ $count +1`
It looks like you are trying to increase the value of count by one here; it
that's the case try altering that line to read like this:
count=`expr $count + 1`
The whitespace between the + sign and the number "1" matters too.

Adam,
Thanks for the suggestion, but I think it is due to lack of drivers. Yes, I
can get sound under Windows. FYI, I have the card connected through the CD
audio channels of my sound card.
The bttv module in linux does try to load everything I need, but it fails
when it tries msp3400. I checked the card and couldn't find any msp3400
chips on the card, so I think my sound needs to come from some other driver.
Any other ideas?
Thanks,

I want to run a UNIX flavour in order to optimise Perl development. Is Linux
easier to use than Solaris? I saw Red Hat 7 listed at 120 which isn't
exactly "free" as the open source movement suggests. On the other hand I
don't want to install an inferior version of Linux just because it's
cheaper/free. Is Red Hat worth the money? Which other Linux versions are
worth considering and what are the trade-offs?
