Procedures for Linux PPP are different - although some distributions are
intent on imitating Microsoft with the likes of kppp and wvdial, both of
which are frontends to pppd. It boils down to "learn how to do things
under Linux or stick to Windows." Your choice.

Both of you have stated that there's no hope for WinCE and Linux, but
there is! As I stated, if you have VMWare's virtual computer running,
then you can install Win9x/NT/2K onto the virtual computer. Isn't this a
solution?

I believe you can boot off the CD then choose upgrade (or something like
that) and have the convience of the menu system to help you pick things out.

What are the "set user ID (4) and set group ID (2) and save text image (1)

I am trying to figure out what "chmod 3773 <foldername>" does.

OK,
I went to www.xfree86.org and found the latest XFree86 with
installation instructions and all.
After struggling with that a while I am now owner ofa system that is
running XFree86 ver 3.3.6, albeit there is no KDE or Gnome yet.
So I returned to my KDE installation and found that the same error
message pops up again when trying to rpm the qt-2.2.1... package
(required according to the KDE people).
So installation of XFree86 did not solve that problem.
What could be the cause and what shall I do now?

These look like Redhat is using this as a way to keep backups, you may want
to remove the symlinks so the originals don't get overwritten and then
rename the new ones after compiling maybe something like System.map-2.4.0
and them make the symlinks point to the new ones. This way when you find
something screwed up and want your old kernel back you just change the
links.
Make sure you have an alternate way to boot whenever you screw with the
kernel, it is easy to slip up and have to reinstall from scratch if you
don't. All of the above would be a very good way to make you unable to boot
your normal system.

Before you actually try to startx, you might want to try to load only
/usr/X11R6/bin/XFree86.

Yes I'm running RedHat 7 but not out of the box (I downloaded it ;) .
I have kernel 2.4.0-prerelease and Xfree86-4.0.2 that I compiled myself along
with the driver provided by Matrox. Yes I replaced XFree's mga_drv.o module
with the one I recompiled from the source code of Matrox's

Subject: Need Ethernet Help
hi
i'm trying to connect 2 computers via ethernet cards. i have no
experience with setting up ethernets whatsoever so please excuse me if i
ask any dumb questions ;)
i have an intel etherexpress 100 and a 3com etherlink III. Following the
instructions in the Ethernet HOWTO, i've set up both cards. The
etherexpress uses a strange io range however. it uses the range
c8000000-c800001f. i'm not sure if this is correct. other values for
this card (from /proc/pci) are io=0xe800, irq=9. everything seems fine
with the etherlink card (io=0x300 irq=10). i have both drivers compiled
into the kernel.
(note: i have a sound blaster awe64 on one machine. when i remove this
card, the etherexpress automatically uses irq 10, but even then, nothing
works)
i then use ifconfig and route as follows:
(for the moment, i'm just using any ip addresses to test the system and
i'm not using DNS. i place the entries in /etc/hosts)
for machine 1 (etherexpress):
ifconfig eth0 197.3.2.1 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route -net 197.3.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
for machine 2 (etherlink):
ifconfig eth0 197.3.2.2 netmask 255.255.255.0 up
route -net 197.3.2.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 eth0
both cards are connected directly to each other using a standard
telephone cable.
after doing this, i use one machine to ping the other, but it doesnt
work. i've tried passing parameters to the drivers at boot time (eg.
ether=9,0x300,eth0) but it doesnt seem to make a difference.
below, i've included the output when loading the drivers for these
cards.
if anyone can help, please do so. i've tried everything i can think of
and i'm getting nowhere fast.
thanks
ali

I am set on installing Solaris onto a disk which already contains
Linux and FreeBSD. There is, however a common "slice extends beyond
end of disk" problem: the installer doesn't like surrounding
partitions. Rather than backing up and restoring very large
partitions, I've saw a post (via deja) about a workaround which
involves effectively hiding surrounding partitions by temporarily
deleting them. Later one can undelete them by restoring some entries
in the partition table.
Any info/support would be highly appreciated -- thanks.

Not good -
Get a hub, they can be had for around $20 these days.
Or if you don't want to use a hub, use a crossover cable.

First of all, are you sure your using a telephone cable?? If so, try using a
standard ETHERNET cable, most likely you will want a crossover cable if you
are connecting two machines directly.
