Subject: apache and pdf files
I am having problems with my apache server whenever a user requests to see a
pdf file. I have tested this using IE on a Win98 machine. What seems to happen
is, the browser invokes Acrobat Reader, but the document is often blank. No
errors, nothing. If you hit refresh 10 times or so, the document eventually
appears. If the pdf document is reasonably large (1.8 MBytes) I get garbage
characters show up on the screen. I have used Acrobat to view the documents
directly, so I know they are OK. Has anyone else ever had these kinds of
problems? I have the pdf documents set up as links in a web page, not as an
imbedded image.

Hello,
AFAIK ICQ-Servers send an ident-request to clients. It goes to port 113
(auth) on your machine, where identd listens. If this request is denied
or rejected by your ipchains based flitering rules, you aren't allowed
to connect to the server.
You got to fix this in your filtering rules.

To each his/her own; but I'm averse to doing things auto-magically.
Linux is dynamic (moving target) and I like to decide when to move.
To me an acceptable technic would be to check for update, generate a
report as to what they reportedly fix, and then (and only then) I could
decide which updates to accept.
Maybe I'm a control freak :-)

True; but consider if you want a third party having access to your
financial data before using e-file, e-tax, or any other such thing.
Remember once you give someone data you loose control. I've looked
at these outfits policy statements and felt uneasy.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,
I have found a new problem, when installing linux on a new computer that
was delivered with Windows 2000.
The first thing I have done is defragmenting Win2000 partition.
After defragmentation, on a 10Go partition, system files were kept in
the middle, and more boring : a very few corrupted files data are kept
at end of the partition . IS IT A NEW FEATURE TO AVOID EASY INSTALL OF
LINUX OR A NEW BUG ?!
This means, that your partition can not begin, before this data, in my
case, 800 Mb only !!!
I tried again defragmenting with win2000 utility but did not help.
So, to install my linux system, I had to completely break all
partitions, create a fat partition of the desired size for win2000, I
completely reinstalled win2000 on this partition and then I installed
linux on the remaining desired partition size.
Bye
Steph.

I've got the 2nd edition of "Running Linux," and it's one of the better
general-purpose Linux books available. I've not yet bought the 3rd
edition, but I have flipped through it in stores, and from what I've
seen I'd say it's also good. I'm clearly biased, because I'm one of the
authors, but the upcoming Sybex book, _Linux System Administration_, may
also be worth considering. (There's at least one other book from another
publisher with the exact same title, though.)
Depending on your needs, you might also want to consider any of several
more specific books. There are plenty of titles on specific Linux
distributions, for instance, or on more specific topics, like
networking, office suites, etc. I've got comments on some of these in
sub-pages off of http://www.rodsbooks.com/books/ and
http://www.rodsbooks.com/distribs/. (The first page features my own
books, but I've got links to pages that cover specific types of Linux
books with other titles.)

You're right, I was talking about the percraid.o driver but the person
who said use aacraid.o instead is also right.
The story is, RedHat have written the aacraid driver which is an open
source replacement for the percraid.o driver. If you go to their site
and select any kernel source from 2.2.16 upwards, it will be included.
Regarding binary modules, if the version of the kernel you're running
is exactly the same as the kernel the binary was compiled against,
there shouldn't be a problem. Otherwise you do an insmod -f and hope
for the best.
For future reference I summarised what I found out at
www.introcomp.cp.uk/linux/binary_module.html

The first part of his question is DEAD easy...
./a.out
The second part, I'm afraid you were wrong about...
There IS no "correct" way or "wrong" way to pronounce linux.
I pronounce it Lin-ux, friends pronounce it lie-nux, Linus himself
pronounces it closer to lee-nux.
You pronounce it the way you're most comfortable with. And that's official.
(Linus himself couldn't give a toss how it's pronounced).

Security.
DOS is single user, single tasking and... well... crap.
Linux allows many users to be online at te same time, and if the current
path is included in the $PATH, then it makes the system vulnerable to
mischief and abuse via executables placed in directories where root may
go...
Saving a script in /tmp call sl or something similar. Root goes into tmp,
mistypes ls, runs the script which could then grant the user who placed it
there root privilages. Or do anything else.

But compared to joe, it IS cumbersome.
Why would I want to have an editor that allows you to type a number of lines
of text unhindered but then prevents you from going back up to change
something in a previous line without hitting some obscure key combinations?
OK, joe might not have all the features touted by VIM, but it's a hell of a
lot easier to use and has all the festures more people would want.

Try the Linux Router Project, LRP. (Please search it through the Internet.
You can find the subject easily.) The hardware requirement is minimal, but
you can still add a lot of features, including ipchains or iptables if you
like. But sorry, it aint no GUI.

Bill,
You don't say what version of Apache you are running,
but I had a similar problem with 1.3.14 . I found a patch for
this problem and after rebuilding the src.rpm the new binary
worked fine. You can find details about this bug and its patch
at

is there a bug? or am I missing something?

Subject: Using MyODBC client to access MySQL on RedHat 7
Date: Fri, 12 Jan 2001 11:42:14 -0500
I am trying to use and ODBC client application on RedHat Linux 7.0 (kernal
2.2.16) to access a MySQL (v3.22.32) database also running on linux (the
same machine, in fact).
I installed unixodbc(v1.8.13) and the myOdbc driver for mysql. When I run
the odbc DataManager application that is built along with the unixodbc libs,
it connects correctly to both my user and system datasources, but if I run a
query using the SQL window, I am returned the list of column headings, no
data, and the correct number of rows that should be returned from the query.
Why do I get the right number of rows returned, but no row data.
I checked the sql.log trace file from the odbc driver and everything seems
ok until it executes the query. Here is a snippet from the log file:
[ODBC][11090][SQLFetch.c][126]
Entry:
Statement = 0x80b2188
[ODBC][11090][SQLFetch.c][294]
Exit:[SQL_NO_DATA]
[ODBC][11090][SQLFreeStmt.c][113]
Entry:
Statement = 0x80b2188
Option = 1
[ODBC][11090][SQLFreeHandle.c][301]
Entry:
Handle Type = 3
Input Handle = 0x80b2188
[ODBC][11090][SQLFreeHandle.c][404]
Exit:[SQL_SUCCESS]
For some reason SQLFetch returns no data? This is consistent with the
application program I have written in C which also returns No Data from the
fetch method call. Ultimately, it is my application code that I want to get
to work, but I thought I should start with code that is suppose to work. I
am assuming that the unixodbc application DataManager is suppose to function
correctly?
Note: If I run the same query from mysql, data is returned.
Does anyone else use ODBC with MySQL? Have you had this problem?

Thanks for your input. I was kinda hoping I wouldnt have to but any
software to make this work. What I've been trying is
1: webserver mounts a dir on the primary nfs server
2: I disconnect the primary nfs server from the network
3: right away I bring up the secondary nfs server with the IP of the
primary nfs server
I then try and do a "ls" from the web server. I get the error
ls: .: Stale NFS file handle
I'm guessing this cant be done with NFS like this. I must be missing
something. I took a look at the linux-ha project but it doesnt look
like it's all finished yet. Anyone have any other ideas?
