Date: 15 Jan 2001 19:47:24 -0500
Well, I did some RPM updates, and now my ppp0 on init doesn't wait to
complete the connection before the init processes move on (It used
to). I need it to wait, because I have fetchmail later in the boot,
and unpredictable results occur if ppp0 isn't up and connected when
that script runs. I'm using Mandrake 7.1.
Anyone have any suggestions on where I should look so the ppp0 start
script waits to connect before OK'ong?
If you want to send email, use the address in the .sig; I haven't
figured out how to fix the one in the news header yet.

That is a good point. Assuming that the boot sectors and boot kernel
remain on the same drive, and are the same ones that got called before,
then you know that it isn't lack of ability to read a scsi module. But
if the kernel being used has changed in anyway, it may have had this
information left out.

I assume that both SCSI drives are LVD; further, that they are probably
both Ultra 160? If only one of them is Ultra 160, they should be able to
exist together if speed is cut back to the slower version; if one is not
LVD, you have a problem at any speed mixing them together.
Assuming they are LVD, whether they are Ultra 160 or not, you can reduce
some of the cable quality requirements temporarily by telling your
adapter to use a slower speed. During bootup, when you can get to the
scsi bios for the scsi controller, try going in and forcing it back to
like 40 MByte/sec to see if it helps. The 15k rpm jobs can push a lot of
data out, a lower spec drive might be having trouble dealing with it (or
the cable).

Also, you have to run lilo after either changing lilo.conf OR making a new

Hi!
Do you know if there any tool that let me list every rpm installed, sorted
by group / category, maybe with other information listed as well?
Basically something like what you see in gnorpm (list mode), but output to
a file, so I can printed out later.
Or probably you know a perl module that let me access the rpm database
using perl?
Thanks!

Hi,
I don't if it will help but I had a similar problem three times a few days
ago. Just erase all files in /.kde/share/applnk and restart kde2. I don't
know why but Kcontrol retreive all his modules after that.
So If you have made some modifications to your menu listing, all we be lost.

You might check to make sure you have Option "DPMS" specified in the
"Monitor" section of your XF86Config. I had nearly the same problem and
for some reason the old monitor worked fine without that option, but the
new one needed it.

You can set the PATH environment variable to use the current
directory, but this makes you vulnerable to puerile tricks

Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 01:56:15 GMT
Hi all,
In searching through Deja I found that other people have gotten help on this
topic in the past in this group, so hopefully someone will be able to help
me.
I'm trying to use mpeg_encode to create a time-lapse mpeg of the images from
my webcam. The webcam stores the image every 10 minutes, so at the end of
the day I end up with 136 images. I would like to display these images
approximately .5-1 second apart to create the time-lapse effect.
For the life of me, I cannot figure out how to get mpeg_encode to do this
for me!!!
I've tried these parameters, and many others, based on my findings on the
'net, but a curious thing happens when I encode my images. I only get about
1/3 of the way in and suddenly the mpeg is done.
I've even tried repeating my input files to correspond to the framerate and
GOP, trying to repeat the file name 24 times and when I do THAT, the
resulting MPEG is EVEN SHORTER?! What the heck is going on?
Anyhow, hopefully someone will have an answer to my predicament!
Here's a listing of my parameter file:

Put your Red Hat CD in the drive. Do 'ls |grep fax'
to see what kind of fax software Red Hat has included with
version 7.0. Install all of the resulting rpms. Read the
man pages that get installed.
I can say that the efax that came with RH 5.1 wasn't so
simple to get working. It took me an entire afternoon.
I've never tried mgetty-sendfax or mgetty-viewfax, but if
I was doing it today, I'd read up on those first.

Well, just in case the original poster doesn't see the followups, I'll
try to help out. He says you'll never want to log off, in other words,
you'll enjoy it so much you'll spend all your time at the computer,
that your SO (SO is "significant other", your girlfriend, boyfriend,
wife, domestic partner, preferred companion of the preferred sex,
whatever) will crack the sads. I must admit I haven't seen "crack the sads"
as an expression before, but it must mean (s)he will become unhappy
due to your neglect, and you will be in deep doo-doo. "doo-doo" is a
kid's word for shit, you know, feces. In other words, you will be in
trouble. What he's really saying is, you'll like using the Athlon.
I have an Athlon and I like it, but I did see that there were other posts
warning of problems with certain configurations. My Asus A7V motherboard
has worked all right for me though.

You have to assign a useful meaning to the NUM LOCK key in your x
configuration. If you use xmodemap, then an .Xmodmap file should
contain the lines:
keycode 77 = KP_F1
keycode 112 = KP_F2
keycode 63 = KP_F3
keycode 82 = KP_F4
The List of keysyms is in /usr/X11R6/include/X11/keysymdef.h
Use xev to find keycodes for keys on your keyboard.

Subject: Re: Migrate to new disk?
Date: Tue, 16 Jan 2001 02:45:36 GMT
I RTFM on http://www.linux.org/docs/ldp/howto/mini/Hard-Disk-Upgrade.html
and I got a 40G harddisk.
After installing Linux on my 40G harddrive, I performed a mount of the old
harddrive under single user mode.
# mount /dev/hdc1 /mnt/harddisk
# cp -a /mnt/harddisk/bin /bin # I continued with all directories under /
except for /boot, /proc
# # it many hang up
with the copy of /lib, but try again, it finally worked for me.
Who Parted?
If I were to do it again, I would use parted from RH7.0, or www.gnu.org.
parted(8) parted(8)
NAME
GNU Parted - a partition manipulation program
SYNOPSIS
parted [options] [device [command [options]]]
DESCRIPTION
This manual page documents briefly the parted command. Complete
documenta
tion is distributed with the package.
parted is a disk partitioning and partition resizing program. It
allows you
to create, destroy, resize, move and copy ext2, FAT and FAT32
partitions.
This is useful for creating space for new operating systems,
reorganising
disk usage, and copying data to new hard disks.
