I use XWC (XWIN Commander) Very simple interface, stable, fast, looks alot
like that ole windows explorer (please forgive me :-)

You can probably find it at rpmfind.net or do an online search, they surely have a
web page. It comes with mandrake 7.1

I have an A7V with a DURON and an ATA100 IDE drive on the 2nd (PROMISE)
Controller and running SuSE7.0 and W2K.
For W2K I had to move my disk to the standard IDE controller install WK2
and the promise driver, before I could use the drive on the promise
controller. Not so for SuSE 7.0, it has a bootdisk image, which includes
support for the promise controller and I could install SuSE without
changing to the standard IDE controller..

There is no problem booting from this controller

Subject: ISP Problem
Date: Fri, 19 Jan 2001 00:38:52 GMT

I have 3ISPs. All the three are working in win98 well. In linux RH6.2,
two ISps are working. Third ISp gave windows autoinstall package.
I have installed it in windows and got the normal user username and
password. The same is working in windows. I have configured it in linux
using RHPPPDialer with same username, passwiord and telephone number. I
checked the wvdial.conf file in /etc/. I didn't
find anydifferance. Still it doesn't work in linux.
FirstISP:
For ETH connection I get like this. IP numbers are changed by me.
Jan 13 08:08:00 lvghomepc pppd[921]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Jan 13 08:08:08 lvghomepc kernel: PPP BSD Compression module registered

Jan 13 08:08:08 lvghomepc pppd[921]: remote IP address x.x.x.x.
Second ISP:
For VSNL connection I get like this. IP numbers are changed by me.
Jan 12 06:48:01 lvghomepc pppd[1803]: Connect: ppp0 <--> /dev/ttyS1
Jan 12 06:48:08 lvghomepc kernel: PPP BSD Compression module registered

Jan 12 06:48:09 lvghomepc pppd[1803]: remote IP address x.x.x.x
For third ISP:
For HCLINFINET connection I get like this.
Jan 14 06:10:35 lvghomepc kernel: registered device ppp0
Jan 14 06:10:35 lvghomepc pppd[930]: pppd 2.3.11 started by root, uid 0

registered
Jan 14 06:10:59 lvghomepc pppd[930]: Could not determine remote IP

Jan 14 06:11:05 lvghomepc pppd[930]: Connection terminated.
Jan 14 06:11:05 lvghomepc pppd[930]: Connect time 0.4 minutes.
Jan 14 06:11:05 lvghomepc pppd[930]: Sent 481 bytes, received 261 byte
Jan 14 06:11:05 lvghomepc pppd[930]: Exit

I have tried in terminal also. I got the foolwing lines in terminal.
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Sun Jan 14 06:10:35 2001
--> PPP daemon has died! (exit code = 10)
--> Disconnecting at Sun Jan 14 06:11:05 2001
--> Auto Reconnect will be attempted in 5 seconds
--> pppd error! Look at files in /var/log for an explanation.

I tried with kppp also. I get same log messages as for wvdial in
/var/log/messages.
How to get connected to HCLINFINET. Any solutions.

I'm using netscape 4.75 under RH 7.0. I seem to be unable to get my own
personal address book functioning. I put addresses in, and I have the
preferences set to look for names in my own address book, but it doesn't
find them.

When I change it to use the netscape general address books it works ok,
but I don't want their giant address book.

Is the best solution just to upgrade Netscape to the latest version?

Also, where are the best sources for netscape documentation on the web?
I often find the help info related to the windows version, and not the
linux version.

Subject: Questions with Cisco Arrowpoint Intelligent Director
Date: 19 Jan 2001 02:11:58 GMT

Hello Everyone,

I am working for a company that is going to deploy Cisco Intelligent
Director (formerly Arrowpoint) to achieve load balancing between
servers (mainly http and https web traffic). This arrowpoint will be
sitting in front of the web servers and Cisco claims that this box can
perform load balancing between web servers for incoming web
traffics. Cisco also claims that the box is very secure.

Here is my dilemma. I have been ordered to deploy this box without
ensuring that the box is absolutely secure (due to pressure from the
marketing and sale department). When I try to scan to scan the box
with nmap (prior to deployment), this is what I come up with:

Starting nmap V. 2.53 by [EMAIL PROTECTED] ( www.insecure.org/nmap/ )
Interesting ports on (199.0.216.222):
(The 1518 ports scanned but not shown below are in state: closed)
Port State Service
21/tcp open ftp
22/tcp open ssh
23/tcp open telnet
80/tcp filtered http
5001/tcp open commplex-link

TCP Sequence Prediction: Class=64K rule
                         Difficulty=1 (Trivial joke)
Remote operating system guess: Neoware (was HDS) NetOS V. 2.0.1 or
HP ENTRIA C3230A

Can anyone tell me what is the probability that someone can hijack the
session if the TCP sequence is predictable? I use the same scan on my
linux server and I get a difficulty of 4782341. How easy is it to hijack
a TCP session like spoofing?

After running nmap, I run nessus (vulnerability accessment) and I
discovered the following security hole:

It was possible to make the remote FTP server
crash by issuing this command :

CEL aaaa[...]aaaa

This problem is known has the 'aix ftpd' overflow and
may allow the remote user to gain root easily.

How serious is this problem? I would like to know if anyone outthere
Who has experiences regarding security with Arrowpoint
Intelligent Director because I certainly do want to put this
device on the Internet without knowing fully the security
implication aspect of this.

Many thanks.
David

>install this?

That's because the "ppa" you're using is *not* an RPM in and of itself,
it's a kernel module. The ppa module is included in all stock RedHat
installs since about 6.0, and it should be located in
/lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/scsi/ppa.o . If it didn't exist, you would
not see the error messages from "insmod" that you got.

First, use "modprobe" instead of "insmod" in most cases. modprobe looks
in /etc/modules.conf and /lib/modules/$KERNELVERSION/modules.dep to see
if the module you're loading requires another module to be loaded first,
then loads that module if it can. ppa support requires that the modules
for Parallel Port, PC-Style Parallel Ports, and Line Printer Support be
loaded. THese modules are also called "parport", "parport_pc", and
"lp".

Finally, please note that ppa is only useful for older ZIP drives.
Newer ZIP drives use imm. Once the module is loaded, the ZIP drive
should appear as /dev/sda, and you can mount DOS-formatted ZIP disks on
/dev/sda4 and Macintosh-formatted ZIP disks on /dev/sda (with filesystem
type "hfs", naturally.)

Boot with a windoz/DOS boot disk and run it from the command line should
work if the upgrade files will fit on a floppy.

Are you running the SCSI core and parallel port drivers as modules, or
compiled into the kernel? I found that with ppa as a module, and scsi
compiled into the kernel, it would not work. It looks like the
dependency problem is with the parallel port driver. If you have this
compiled as a module, you could always try 'modprobe ppa.o' rather than
insmod. This will load all the modules ppa depends on if not loaded
prior to loading ppa itself, if they aren't already running.

I can't see what difference getting the newest driver source would make
if you are running a recent kernel. The ppa-based zip drives are no
longer being made, anyway; all newish parallel port zip drives use the
imm driver. However, if you had one of these, it just would just not
detect a drive. However you might try imm.o also if nothing else works.

update; apt-get dist-upgrade' and watch apt make all the effort for you.

Its possible that your chipset simply doesn't have any MIDI support
(except the external MPU-401 jack) under linux. Many sound chipsets,
especially newer PCI ones, use a partly software-based MIDI system storing
samples in system memory. This rarely gets implemented in linux drivers.

If you think about this for a minute, you can see what happens here.
Find is executing outside of your script with "fixit" as an argument, but
"fixit" is a function inside of your script, thus find can't see it.

To make this work, code it like this:

for i in $(find . -print); do
        fixit $i
done

I'm not familiar with all the ones that may work in MS Windows, but
I really like a program called WaveRepair. Here is an address:

http://homepages.nildram.co.uk/~abcomp/wavrep.htm

It is a shareware program if you want to use its advanced features,
but it is freeware if you just want to record wav files and then
split them up. While recording, it takes up the whole screen and
is easy to see from across the room while it is recording. It
is very easy to mark and then split the wav files.

I have been using it to record audio tapes and then split the tracks
so that I can put them on CD.

I have not tried to use it with Wine. I like it so much that I went
ahead an registered it even though I may not use the other things
that it does.

I have COREL Second Edition (the CD that came off a UK Linux rag). What's
keeping me from upgrading to the 2.4 kernel is that COREL put in some
[proprietary?] module that recognizes my PCtel modem. I guess I'll have
to wait till the Third Edition; I won't be surprised if it's going to be
called Microsoft Unplugged: The Linux formerly known as COREL :-(
