Yes, that will work just fine. I'd advise you to read the
Hard Disk Upgrade Mini HOWTO, just the same. You'll find it
in /usr/doc or at www.linuxdoc.org. That document gives some
good advice about preserving symlinks and permissions during
the copy operation.
Step 6 (the reboot) is unnecessary, I believe. You can just
mount -ao remount after you've edited /etc/fstab.

For a redhat 6.2 system it would be zip-2.3-4.

If it isn't found at boot time then you need to add or edit the append=
line in /etc/lilo.conf and then run lilo to update MBR.
append="mem=228M"

Subject: The detected UART is odd: maybe an IO port conflict?
Date: Fri, 02 Feb 2001 19:26:36 +0000
Hi,
I'm trying to get a lan/modem combo pcmcia card(D-Link DMF-560TX)
working on my clevo/laptech/sager 862 running RH6.2. I
have manged to get the card working (both lan and modem) on win95
after fiddling around with irq and io settings. At the moment I
only have the lan portion of the card working on RH. The card is non
cardbus.:
When I test the system setup, I get:
[root@lapstat debug-tools]# ./test_setup
Current kernel: 2.2.14-5.0 #2 Tue Jan 23 16:33:35 GMT 2001
Module info from /lib/modules/2.2.14-5.0/pcmcia/pcmcia_core.o:
Linux PCMCIA Card Services 3.1.23
options: [pci] [cardbus] [apm]
Startup options from /etc/sysconfig/pcmcia:
PCMCIA=yes
PCIC=i82365
PCIC_OPTS=
CORE_OPTS=
Checking current syslog files in /var/log:
All PCMCIA messages are in /var/log/messages.
Module status:
The PCMCIA kernel modules are loaded correctly.
Daemon status:
cardmgr is running (process 193)
Current socket status from /var/lib/pcmcia/stab:
Socket 0: D-Link DMF560TX Ethernet/Modem
0 network pcnet_cs 0 eth0
0 serial serial_cs 0 ttyS2 4 66
Socket 1: empty
When I test the modem, I get:
[root@lapstat debug-tools]# ./test_modem
Checking modem at /dev/ttyS2:
Settings: /dev/ttyS2, UART: 16450, Port: 0x0af8, IRQ: 3
The detected UART is odd: maybe an IO port conflict?
Sending modem query command...
from this, I get no response and when trying to run kppp, I get
'sorry, modem does not respond'. I'm pretty sure its a hardware
conflict of some sort and I've been through the PCMCIA Howto and tried
changing the io and irq and also the UART settings using
setserial but without getting rid of the problem.
I've checked the system log which seems to be reporting the serial_cs
driver has been loaded after detecing the combo card in socket
0.
Help is much appreciated.
Cheers

Your distros list of files.
I presume you are talking about infozip as opposed to gzip? One is for
the dos archive format, the other is for compression of data.

Login as root - /home must not be in use during this process and root
normally lives in /root rather than /home/root. Just logging in as
an ordinary user will ususally make the /home partition "busy" (i.e.
show as in use). If your web server funs out of /home/httpd you will need
to turn it off as well (same for any other service using /home)
|1- make a new directory in the first partition i.e., /newhome.
|2- copy everything from /home to /newhome

3a - remove/rename existing empty /home directory that was being used
as a mount point.
|4- rename /newhome to /home
|5- edit /etc/fstab to remove /dev/hdc5
And you are done. No need to reboot, just log out from the
root account and log in as your normal account.
|6- reboot
Not required.

Try recompiling your kernel with support for the sound card and network
card. This should help. Look in your kernel docs(should be in the
source directory( should be /usr/src )) for info on recompiling the
kernel. Also check the HOW-TOs online.

I would do this:
1- make the copy in the first partition.
2- unmount the partition
3- delete the partition, and use parted or some other utility to resize
the /dev/hdc2 to take up the entire disk space.
4- edit /etc/fstab
5- rename /newhome /home
6- reboot

The kernel no longer reports the shared memory in /proc/meminfo (where
free(1) gets its numbers). It's not a problem.

Bla bla
C-d
The files in both locations get updated. When I edit one of them using

from the command line and they are different. How is this possible.
I ran sync a couple of times and the files are still different.
I have mandrake linux (kernal 2.2) using ReiserFS.
Any ideas?

Subject: How to upgrade software for old Redhat system?
Date: Wed, 31 Jan 2001 15:41:05 +0800
As Redhat Linux use rpm for installation, the rpm of new software usually
support new version RHL because Redhat often change the system layout in
new version. Then installation of the new rpm sometimes would not
replace the old rpm in old Redhat system. Sometimes the new installed
software even not work. If I want to upgrade the original software in
rpm to new version with replacement of the old rpm, what should I do?
Use the source code to compile and install the software?
Or, use source code rpm to build new rpm for my system?
Which way can replace the old rpm files and make the new software to
work better with my system?
Thanks a lot!
I don't want to upgrade to newer RH because my Linux Box work fine, only
some software is a bit older.

Each document in the filesystem is uniquely identified by something called
an "inode". Directory contents ("hard links") tell which inode goes with
each filename.
When you use the shell (with ">>"), apparently the document corresponding
to a particular inode is being updated. Then each of your hard links still
points to the same inode, and hence the same file contents.
When you use emacs, apparently it is opening a new file, with a new inode,
then changing the directory so that the filename points to the new inode.
Then the edited file will differ from the other links (that used to share
the inode). You will probably find that the emacs backup file (suffixed
with "~") points to the old inode.
The behavior of emacs can be changed. See the emacs info pages for the
node called "Copying vs. Renaming", where it documents an emacs variable
called "backup-by-copying".
P.S. Running "sync" should usually not matter at all.

I'm not familiar with your particular hardware, but if the uart really
is a 16450, it is incredibly old and outdated (early 1980's?). The 16450
will overheat and die if you try to clock it beyond its original
intentions. Almost every device needing this category of uart now runs a
16550A. Probably you need to use setserial or some other means to
specify 16550A instead; but be warned, that a true 16450 running at full
specs of a 16550A might die.
