Hi!
I can't log on to sourceforge with my distributionless linux.
With konqueror, I load www.sourceforge.net, click the login-link on the
left side, enter my information, press submit, and then see the message
"can't connect to sourceforge.net".
Same with w3m on the same machine.
>From another machine with the same network setup (except for a loopback
route) I can connect and login.
It doesn't matter whether I use a proxy or not.
Both the working and the non-working hosts are part of my local network,
which is conected to the internet with a masqueraded route (it's an
ipchains thing).
I have no clue.

top offers the information in human-readable form, but it gets all of it
from /proc. So, it has to be somewhere in there.
Sorry, I don't know any program save for top thas uses (or distributes)
that information.

or at least my system, the minute I load it as a module, or the minute I
use it as a kernel built-in.
I kept searching for over a week, and just now found the culprit.
It works OK when I remove via82cxxx (CONFIG_BLK_DEV_VIA82CXXX) from my
configuration.
I selected this option since I have a Abit VP6 motherboard with a
vt82c694X/vt82c686b (says Abit) (/proc/pci says vt82c693a/694x - Apollo
Pro133X).
Is there a known conflict between these options / modules ?
Thanks,

Not when you're learning, as I am. I've botched a couple of systems (with
X and such) so badly it was easier to reinstall than figure out where all
the problems were and fix them. I've also had to repartition drives
several times, which means reinstalling. I recently lost my mouse, e.g.
and couldn't figure out why. Spent several hours futzing about to no
avail, so I just reinstalled everything. Took less than an hour.

Yes. I've heard very good things about apt-get, and supposedly even
dselect has been improved. I use Linux primarily as a workstation, so I'm
waiting for Debian to bundle X 4.0.2 with their distro (and hopefully KDE
2.1) as the performance improvement is substantial.

hi,
I 've downloaded KDE2 (its screenshots looks nice!) recently but I found
troubles with its installation..
To be more specific, I downloaded 3 rpms that in the KDE Installation
Instructions file said that it was required (kdelibs, kdebase and
kdesupport)...
My problem is that when I tried to install it, I noticed that there are a
looooooot of dependencies that are missing from my computer...
So I started to find all that depedencies that are required to install KDE2
but there are too many and I could hardly find them all...
I was wondering if I can find all KDE's dependencies in one rpm or
something...
thanx in advance
Konstantinos
P.S Thanx a lot for your help in one of my previous questions.. That problem
is solved now..

xset +dpms # turns it on
xset dpms 300 600 900
sets it to go into standby mode in 5min and suspend mode in 10min and
turn off in 15min. If you don't want it to turn off but still want
standby and suspend modes then you could use this.
xset dpms 300 600 0

I think you're right.
I changed the execution of my script to "/etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall >
/etc/rc.d/init.d/firewall.log"
Now everything works good. I guess the when the dhcp daemon runs the script
the output gets displayed on the screen but there is no command prompt to go
back to because it's a daemon running the script - ie: it's not a user
session.
Redirecting the output to a log makes it work ok.
Thanks,
Tom

This is a result of the font server not being started. Either start the
font server _before_ trying to start X, or edit the X configuration file to
comment out that font path.

I have used a program called 'catdoc' to generate TeX files,
which can then be converted to PS, PDF, etc. How well it works
depends on the document -- certainly figures are a problem --
but if you don't have to handle arbitrary Word docs you might
be able to hack catdoc to do what you need.

I'm not clear on the OP circumstances, but in the FWIW category...
It's been some time, but I observed similar symptoms. IIRC I was in and out
of PPP dialup from the same X login over several weeks. Over time I noticed
X acting more and sluggish until it became basically useless. Reboot! After
noticing literally dozens of these CLOSE_WAIT sessions one day I logged out
of X to do some console work and made a note to look into them later. But I
found them totally eliminated when I did log back into X. My conclusion was
the X login on my local side was keeping some (most?) of these links around
even after the remote host signaled termination. After a time it completely
overwhelmed the kernel and/or hardware, usually weeks if not more.
I suppose this is actually a result of X as a networked protocol, and it is
not without its redeeming features. For example, if my phoneline gets a hit
and the carrier drops, I can switch to a console, redial, and pick up again
in the same X session a minute or so later without a hitch.
I don't think a hit modem 'Doze session is as easy to resume... :)
I don't do 'Doze in my blissed ignorance; can't say... :)

Wolfgang Hackl <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> writes:
> I wonder if there are already tools for changing the fs-type on a

If you consider your data so unimportant that you haven't arranged a
method to back it up, then the answer is _OBVIOUS_.
All you need to do is to pick partitions, and run:
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda2
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda3
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda4
That does the job of converting an ext2 partition into a reiserfs
partition just as readily as it does of converting a blank partition
into a reiserfs partition.
It won't preserve files, but if you're not bothering to do backups, it
is manifestly obvious that you don't value the files very much.
If you consider your data to be of any continuing value, then I
suggest you look into the orthogonal issue of arranging a backup
scheme. Once they're backed up,
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda2
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda3
# mkreiserfs /dev/hda4
mount the filesystems, and recover from the backups.
The amount of work required to do an in-place conversion from ext2 to
ReiserFS would be an entirely ridiculous lot of work, requiring
someone that is simultaneously expert in understanding the code
of_BOTH_ filesystems. And it may not even be _feasible_. If the two
FSes conflict in where inode tables are required to be, then it's just
not going to be nice to try to write such a tool.

A couple??? It took me weeks of mistakes retrials and changes to get
slackware installed about 7 years ago. Turned out I had bad memory,
which was why the techies couldn't put windows on the machine and let
me do anything I liked. One day the memory bitsmashed and blew 100MB
of files out of /usr into lost and found. I spent the whole afternoon
recognizing files by bits of their content and putting them back where
they belonged. Many were in fragments. I never did get the last 20MB
back out of lost+found, but it didn't make any difference.
I certainly got familiar with the system.

Losing your mouse can have exactly two causes: no driver, no device
file (or no mouse - but lets rule that out, shall we).

I _believe_ 4.02 is available for debian .. pointing your apt-get at
testing or unstable ought to do it, I think. If its not on debian official,
somebody will have packaged it, so you can just point apt-get there,
wherever there might be.
Or install it and repackage it yourself. It's not hard. You only need
the server really.

If you use useradd to create the user, use the -m option. The files in
/etc/skel will be installed in their home directory. Just make sure those
files look like you want them to. This is RedHat. Not sure about others.

I have all the java crap unchecked (as far as I can tell) and it still
takes a lot of RAM. mozilla-bin is the only thing it runs (4 processes
of it) and it takes 100+MB.
Can someone help me?
I know gnus is great, but I'd like to have a graphical mail program...
Anyone have any suggestions???
