XF86Config-4 is used only with XF86 4.x; XF86Config is used by all others.

No.

No.
Since XF86 4.x is still "unproven," it's expected that some people
will run both 3.3.x and 4.x at the same time. The two conffiles are
to allow that.

I want to know if this is possible, theoretically. I know that there will
be no performance gain, since all the virtual computers are ran by the same
CPU. I want to tinker around and have fun with Beowulf, but don't want to
invest in new computers just for fun.

Hi all,
What is the best way for a user, who doesn't have the root password, to
mount cdrw or zip disks? This is easy to do for floppy disks and cdrom
with kde, since there are icons for them on the desktop, but I can't use
them to mount zip disks or cdrw (my internal cdrw drive is different
from the internal cdrom drive).
Thanks,

Even though they probably don't support it, Earthlink should be fine with
DSL/Linux. How you connect depends on the actual DSL setup you have-- this
isn't actually provided by Earthlink, but your local phone company, or maybe
a third party DSL provider. Most likely, they're using PPPoE. In any case,
there's nothing proprietary or unusual about what they use.

Windoze assumes that its system files are installed in the first primary
partition on the first hard disk. There's really no way to boot Doze
otherwise. Y'see, why would *anyone* want to have any non-Microsoft OS
on their PC? :-]
There is a way to trick Doze, though. I don't know how you managed to
install LoseME on /dev/hdb2, since DOze only recognizes one primary
partition, but this trick may get you booting Lose2K anyway. Use a
similar entry in lilo.conf for LoseME :
other=/dev/hdb1
table=/dev/hdb
map-drive=0x80
to=0x81
map-drive=0x81
to=0x80
label=lose2k
If I were you, I'd physically swap the drives and use Lose2K's
bootloader to boot all your OSes. Linux can live just about anywhere on
any disk; Doze is much less tolerant.
>I also tried linuxconf.But it didn't work.
Doesn't surprise me one bit. (Funny, similar setup with a friend's
system with Lose95 on hdb, a 1.5-year-old version of YaST figured it out
automagically....)

root should edit /etc/fstab so that the entries for the CD/floppy/ZIP/
removable media drives have the "user" keyword in the options field. An
example from my /etc/fstab :
/dev/scd0 /mnt/cdrom auto ro,noauto,user,exec 0 0

Subject: Trouble getting nntp running locally
Date: Sat, 17 Mar 2001 20:56:38 -0000
I'm trying to setup leafnode and nntp so I can pull Usenet down locally
and read it with tin (without tin having to reach out and touch the net
so often).
I think I've got leafnode setup properly, but I can't get my nntp server
to run. The instructions with leafnode assume inetd, but with RH7, it's
xinetd and a different configuration method.
I've done all the things in the instructions and fetchmail has
successfully retrieved a complete grouplist from my ISP's newsserver. It
exists as /var/spool/news/leaf.node/<my ISP's newsserver>.
leafnode's instructions offer this inetd.conf example:
nntp stream tcp nowait news /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/local/sbin/leafnode
I've created an /etc/xinetd.d/nntp like this (all paths are valid):
service nntp
{
socket_type = stream
protocol = tcp
wait = nowait
# port = 119 # I added this but it didnt' help
user = news
server = /usr/sbin/tcpd /usr/sbin/leafnode
}
/etc/hosts.allow contains "leafnode: 127.0.0.1" and hosts.deny contains
"leafnode: ALL EXCEPT LOCAL". /etc/nntpserver contains only "localhost".
$NNTPSERVER is not set at all. All three examples are quoted here, but
not in the actual files.
The line for port 119 in /etc/services reads (tabs->spaces for usenet):
nntp 119/tcp readnews untp # USENET News Transfer Protocol
I've forced xinetd to reread its config files (kill -s SIGUSR2 <pid>).
However, tin still fails to connect to the nntp server, probably because
it's either not running or not accepting connections. If I "telnet
localhost 119", I get a connection refused error. I've tried adding an
alias for leafnode to the /etc/services line, but to no avail.
Have I missed something or translated the inetd-->xinetd change
improperly? I can "telnet localhost xx" on a number of other services,
so xinetd is working properly.
Thanks for any help.

Inetd and xinetd are two different programs (for the same purpose). It
looks like you don't have xinetd and telnetd installed.

Get rid of inetd, install xinetd and telnetd RPM files, and enable telnetd.

Hi,
I installed Mandrake 7.2 and and found out I couldn't telnet
into it from my local network. I had tried ftp and it seemed to
work. I then installed the telnet-services rpm and then the
telnet function started working, but, it seems that the ftp
function stopped working. Maybe the problems are not
related.
The main problem is that I can't ftp into the Mandrake7.2 box.
I tried configuring /etc/ftpaccess and it made no difference.

I have an Athlon 700, 128MB RAM, with a new ATI Radeon 32MB DDR AGP video
card. My linux is Mandrake 8.0beta with kernel-2.4.1, XFree86-4.0.2,
glibc2.2 (with glibc2.1 compatibility libs installed), and Mesa-3.4.1.
My video card appears to be properly setup and configured, as bootup
messages indicate that the system knows that I have a Radeon card and the
messages indicate that acceleration is enabled.
I recently bought the game "Terminus". The problem is that whenever I
start it, it uses software opengl rendering instead of hardware
acceleration (via DRI, I believe).
I BELIEVE that DRI is enabled on my system (how can I confirm this?). How
do I get hardware acceleration to work?

How many times are you going to post this (with fake e-mail address) and
NOT read the answers? A ppp connection needs 2 IP addresses, one for each
end of ppp. You only specify 1 (the remote), so is it any surprise that
pppd cannot determine what to use for the local end of ppp?
Is "optins.srv" really spelled that way? The 'proxyarp' option is
meaningless without an ethernet connection. See below.

Try specifying an IP for both ends of the connection:
192.168.0.1:192.168.0.25
Or if a remote IP is specified in 4th field of pap-secrets:
192.168.0.1:

You either need a different name for your modem connection, or just use
'localhost' instead of 'gtech' for your hostname (since you are not on a

If it's using 4.0.2, your Radeon doesn't have 3D acceleration enabled.
3D acceleration is only available from the DRI CVS (and perhaps the
XFree86 CVS perhaps). It should definately show up in XFree86 4.0.3.
To confirm this, open up /var/log/XFree86.0.log and look for a line that
says:
Direct Rendering Enabled
(that might not be the exact wording). If you don't see that, you don't
have 3D acceleration :-)
If you want 3D acceleration, but don't want to wait till XFree86 4.0.3
comes out, check out:
http://dri.sourceforge.net
for info on how to pull the code from CVS.
And trust me, Terminus looks *great* with a Radeon :-)
