We use MS's pathetic excuse for email. It's quicker to send email
through my personal internet account from the UK to America then it is
to email the person who sits next to me at work.

If you use ip-up to start processes when the connection is made these
processes need to be run in the background so that the ip-up script
can terminate and return to pppd. Try amending you script so that
mail commands run in the background. i.e.
mail)
( sendmail -q;
fetchmail;
/etc/ppp/ppp-down ) &

Well I have tried MS/SQL and let me tell you, WHAT a PEICE of utter
crap!
I worked on a DICOM web image server, we used Windows NT Enterprise
Edition, IIS, and MS SQL Enterprise edition on a Pentium Pro dual
processor machine. No other extra services were installed. The SQL
server process would crash under high loads. Fortunately Microsoft has
the SQL Manager with restarts the process when it crashes!
For kicks, we ported the code to Linux using Apache and PostGreSQL.
Never a crash, never a problem, on a pentium 233 64 Meg RAM vs the dual
Pentium Pro with 128 Meg. The NT server had a 1 to 2 second deleay
before service, the Linux box was almost instantainious. The NT box, SQL
would crash periodically on the complex queries, PostGreSQL would not.
Not to mention the cost! We had to go EE because of the number of users,
at $3999 for NT and $3999 for SQL we could save $7998 for better
performance and use Linux. The only issue is acceptence of Linux, a year
ago that was a problem, but, less now.

I don't know how the original poster sees this, but I think that it'd be
nice if there was some other useful fonts in the package than times, as
it's a bit dull. A little more stylish fonts, like garamond etc, could be
a nice touch. Then again, I've no use with starbats and it's kind.

You seem to know, so:
What difference there are between .pfa, .pfb and .pfm files? Postscript
is quite unknown area to me though I'm no way a newbie with computers.

I was also wondering this thing, so thanks from me also.
I just would like to know, if StarOffices psetup could copy the files to
their right places and update psstd.fonts? At least updating by hand
sounds quite awkward... (ok, I'm lazy :)

That was true for U-235. There was at least one more Fat Man ready to

Dear Giuseppe Frangiamone,
First, be sure the drives are able to support Sync transfer & 40MB/sec
transfer rates. I would try changing the transfer to Async and give
that a try. I had that problem with my Zip100 drive. I would write a
file to it and the file would get corrupt ... espectially if it was a
BIG file. You have no idea how many times I downloaded the
kernel-2.2.1 source before finding this one!
Second, is this a problem that has just started happening with linux??
Or has it been all along? If it just started happening I would check
the drives for a possible impendant failure.
If it has happened since you installed Linux try my first suggestion.
NT and 95 and others default to Async for all drives unless you force
the issue.
If you are able to backup your information... you can try a media
check under the SCSI device tools or something for the SCSI card. Its
the other option after pressing <ctrl>-A that comes up. The first
line is for configureing the adapter and devices and the second takes
you to tools as in lowlevel formatting and Media-Checking of the
drives. BE SURE TO MAKE A BACKUP BEFORE DOING ANY OF THESE!!!!
Good Luck

I can't find it, at least not in the red hat distrib. the closest i found
was Bootdisk-HOWTO but the info there is only mildly relevant.

Anyone still have that URL for the article that covered Linux's 212% growth?
They covered the fact that NT's growth was partly attributable to needing more
copies just to get the same amount of work done. They highlighted exchange,
which can only handle 300-400 users per server (typically), where *nix could
handle 5,000-10,000 on comparable hardware.
I can vouch personally for the company I just left having the exact
limitations stated above with Exchange. And the gods forbid people start
zapping off those 5MB avi's and crap--good luck keeping Exchange up. :-P

Making a boot disk is not very straightforward, I'm afraid. You'll have
to read much. The Linux Bootdisk HOW-TO tells you really everything,
however, and it is very well-written and up-to-date. I suggest that you
read it carefully from the beginning.

Xcopy is usually used for recursive copies. In mtools you use the -/
flag for that. Example:
mcopy -/ a:mydirectory .
This command copies mydirectory and its contents from a: to the
current Unix directory
