If you are running a modern (not ancient) version of cron, then you
should be able to specify the clean way of saying "every" 10 minutes -

*/10 * * * * /sbin/jobrunner <etc>...

Also, are you receiving any status messages via mail? Since you do not
pipe the output from 1> or 2> to /dev/null - cron will write you an
email message of all program output for your programs. If you are not
receiving any such emails, cron may not know the existence of your crontab.

Are you editing your crontab via the "crontab -e" command? If not, your
crontab will not get recognized by cron and your changes could be lost
if cron dumps its own copy of your crontab over your manually edited one.

Two problems. The most immediate, being bootable, was addressed by
another. You need to set up the partition and make it bootable via
dos, using the "sys" command. This transfers the system files and
also changes pointers in the boot sector to load the system.

The second problem is that the file attributes (hidden, system,
read-only) are sometimes important, and standard tar does not save
or restore those properly (in my experience). Perhaps they have
improved the vfat filesystem or tar itself to fix that. If not you
will have some subtle and annoying problems with win9x.

Subject: KSH conditional statements

I am trying to make an if/else statement that will switch based on an
integer value that is read from a file. It never returns true . . .

  integer INT1=`tail -n1 file1.txt`
  integer INT2=`tail -n1 file2.txt`

  if (INT1 > INT2) then
    PATH=/home/path1
  else
    PATH=/home/path2
  fi

The error that I get when I run this is:

  path_decision_mgr[##]: INT1: not found

Can anyone tell me what is wrong with this statement? Why does it always
choose the else and never take the if path. Note that the integer is of the
form 20010611 (INT1) and 20010607 (INT2).

Thanks,
God bless,
William Campbell

Nope! At least not necessarily. Maybe there is a way to make the loader
tell you the library in this case, but I have had this problem more than
once. The problem always was a missing library, but the message only
sayd: "command not found"

What is SNMP and how do ISP's and hosting companies use it?

What software do they typically use?

I am curious about this. Thanks.

What I did, a little more complex, but it works ... =]
I have a server that routes my cable modem to my LAN. On that box, I
put up an IMAP server, and then had that box bring down my mail from the
ISP to my server. I then can use any client that supports an IMAP server,
either within the network, or anywhere on the internet and see all of my mail

OK I know this os probably stupid but...

I have a linux box (Red Hat 7.1).

When I connect to the SMTP server (Sendmail 8.11.4) using Outlook
Express it is slow to connect (about 15 - 30 seconds). When I telnet to
the machine it is quick to connect and after that
outlook is also quick to conect (about 1 Second).

However if I go away for two hours and come back Outlook Express is slow
to connect again.

I Can tell you all the following:

1 - It isn't sendmail. I set the Ident timeout to 0s in the config file

and compiled sendmail with the DNS disabled. So It isn't doing a reverse

DNS Lookup.

2 - The linux box has a static IP Address. The machine I am connecting
to it obtains it's IP address from a DHCP server (which isn't the Linux
box).

3 - All the addresses in the DHCP servers address block (192.156.2.0 -
192.156.2.255) are listed in the hosts file with names ranging from
office0 - office255. My machine is called doggy. Ichanged the host file

to set the current IP address of my machine to doggy but problem
persists.

4 - I set nsswitch.conf to use files then dns to resolve hostnames.

5 - The DNS Server is on another machine separate from the Linux box.

5 - The ipchains service is disabled.

I think it may be some sort of caching problem but don't know where to
start looking.

Any help greatly aprecited.

Nigel.

Hi there,

I'm quite a newbie to linux and its drivers, so i have a question. I'm
trying
to setup SuSe 7.1 from the Internet. When starting the setup i have to add
an
networkmodule for my network card. I've downloaded the source code for my

from SuSe but how do put my driver on it. How do i compile it and is this
done
in Windows or in Linux.... (ok i have a lot of questions....)

Any suggestions ?

Is something else (e.g. tcpwrappers or xinetd) trying to do a

Not that I know of. POP is fine, FTP is fine, Telnet is fine. It is just SMTP
that is the problem. Once it connects everything is OK it's just the inital
connection that takes the time (I looked in outlooks smtp logs). SMTP is not
connected to xinetd in anyway. Is it connected to tcpwrapper though? I don't
know.

"Simple Network Management Protocol" - an excellent document describing
the characteristics of SNMP (versions 1 and 2) including its
capabilities can be found at:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/cisintwk/ito_doc/snmp.htm

It's used to standardize a set of tools in order to manage/query/setup
machines that support SNMP. The software used to implement SNMP are
SNMP clients (freely available, commerically available). There are also
modules that you can download (free) which allow you to develop your own
programs to manage/query/setpu machines that support SNMP.

Probably not -- IIRC RH7.1 doesn't install tcpwrapper by
default. There are enough extra features in xinitd that
running tcpwrapper is sort of redundant.

Right about now is when I usually give up and install qmail.
I've not run into your exact problem before, but I've lost
enough battles with sendmail to know when to surrender. :)

This is not true - whileit certainly holds for every user's crontab,
/etc/crontab does not need to be edited through "crontab -e".

I don't know what would specifically cause your system to hang, but I have
totally ditched Mandrake now. I'm sick of it crapping out on my, I'm sick of
packages not updating properly etc...

I tried to update to Mandrake 8.0 from 7.2 (which was ...ok, but still had
package issues for me) - and it hung on me during the install which corrupted
my system (lucky I backed up).

Then I tried a fresh install of 8.0 - which hung at the end but did not corrupt
my system (it turned out that it installed just fine, but it hung).

I got fed up and ditched it in favor of a Redhat 7.1 install which has been
running for a long time now without any hitches.
